Coming back to this video over 7 years later to celebrate. On today, October 9th, 2022 aMSa The Red Yoshi just won The Big House 10, one of the most heavily stacked super major tournaments in Melee history. He beat Mang0, one of the old five gods and The Big House's reigning champion, having won four of them in the past including TBH 9. This is the FIRST time a Yoshi has ever won a major tournament, let alone a super major. aMSa's years and years of dedication proved this video right: Melee is STILL changing, STILL weird, and STILL beautiful.

honestly I don't agree with the 'video games don't have rules they have laws' theory on why games 'arn't like sports' because that daigo parry? it's impossible to react for, you can't see the super start up AND the parry input, you have to do a read of your opponent, it's exactly the same as a coach calling time out because he recognises a off placed whatever in the other coaches lineup and changing his attack plan to compensate, it's that level of 'meta play' that makes sports interesting. it doesn't matter if it's 'a conclusion of the mechanics' a goal eventually happening in most sports is a conclusion of the mechanics of having goals in the game, what matters is how you play against your opponent. street fighter has been and always will be about two things, area denial and reading your opponent.

You don't get the difference between a law (like in a law of physics, not a legality) and a rule. A rule is something you can hash out and agree on with your fellow players. A law is something that can't be changed, negotiated, influenced oder manipulated in any manner, like the speed of light being a constant.

there's something about Melee that separates it from other fighting games and puts it in a category of its own. Melee has a physics system. it is a cartoon "analogy" of real-world physics - not a realistic simulation, but a collection of physical mechanics that combine to create deep and engaging gameplay. a fighting game can be seen as a high-speed competition of animation states. players are constantly trying to control space and get their character in the ideal animation state to put their opponent at a disadvantage. here's where Melee separates itself: in a traditional fighting game like Street Fighter, Tekken, etc, character movement is solely based on the character's animation tree, each state of which has a static velocity. usually this consists of back / forward walking states and a jump. the speeds of these options are static and don't change. in Melee, however, not only do characters have a deeper suite of movement states (walk, dash, run, turnaround, shorthop, fullhop, airdodge, falling) *a character's animation states interact with the physics system.*. a character with low friction travels farther before turning around; a character with high horizontal airspeed can float horizontally in the air farther after a jump. the combination of a deeper movement tree, options to influence momentum in the air and on the ground, and the characters and environment being endowed with physical properties, leads to a polynomial explosion in the complexity of the movement system. this is what takes melee into a whole new category. the fact that the space of movement options is so complex means that melee *feels physical*. it's the best way i can describe it. melee has such freedom of expression in movement that a player can express not only skill, but STYLE in movement. only in melee can you "break someones ankles" and "style on em" with the finesse of a streetball player. in a game theoretical sense, melee's game state is wildly complex compared to other fighting games. the number of properties influencing player interactions at any given time is huge. this makes melee a much more "open" game compared to traditional fighters, and i think this is a part of why the traditional FGC has been so quick to deride it. games like SF have a much more "locked down" state, and traditional FGC competition states like option selects become much more central parts of the experience as a result. this leads people to see it as a more "true" or "pure" fighting game focused on execution, yomi, and mindgames. in reality, though, melee has an equally central focus on reads, option selects, and mindgames, but like i said, there are simply more properties in play, so the skillset becomes a combination of traditional FGC skill and the "physical" skill / intuition of melee. in melee, you can force an option select by throwing a nair into a shield...but that nair can come after a jump with any different horizontal or vertical momentum. you can shorthop in with nair and drift back to just nick the shield, avoiding the hitbox of the opponent's counterplay. you can get hit, so you fly backwards, then airdodge 160 degrees to the left when you're 4 frames above landing on the platform, causing you to slide along the platform based on your character's friction value and the ground's friction value, falling backwards off the platform and throwing another move out on the way down to catch the opponent. etc.
@NickKrishnan2 жыл бұрын
i like what you have to say here, but the way you use "option select" with respect to melee is technically incorrect, at least with respect to the FGC term. even with respect to melee, i would define that nair on shield situation as a mix up, not an option select.

Third Strike's grading system is a fucking enigma. Man, I resonate SO MUCH with the concept shared in this video of "what the system can't stop you from doing". People will always write it off negatively as a glitch and undermine players for doing them, but when the glitches evolve into tech such as wave dashing or bunny hopping it amounts to so much more! The developers unintentionally create mechanically expressive games that make the game feel more rewarding for executing inputs skillfully, and creating a fast paced fun experience overall.

I'd play Brawl/PM/4 with smash balls on (and a couple other items), hated FD and 'boring' triplats, and thought that using "glitches" like wavedashing, desyncing, etc invalidated Melee as a viable competitive game, going as far as to say "Melee is a solved game" occasionally. And in 2022, aMSa actually won a Supermajor with Yoshi and has gone from the hero of 1 set in this video, to a straight up contender for the #1 spot. It's surreal, and watching this video reminds me JUST HOW SURREAL it is!

Happy to say that in late 2021 amsa is still relevant and a joy to watch

Little did he know that he was not reaching at all. aMSa is steadily climbing. The art of doublejump armor, and super-well timed parries, truly has changed Yoshi's rating and viability.
@paddyscott23285 жыл бұрын
Sure Amsa is now a consistent threat to all the Gods and Yoshi is high tier now but all that spiel about Fox was the biggest reach in the video. Even at the time this video was this video massively overemphasized Fox's centralisation and now that there's only one and a half foxes left in the top 10 it's just outlandish.
@byrne18075 жыл бұрын
@@paddyscott2328 No Fox is still widely regarded as the best character in the game. Very common at high level play, especially with Leffen being such a dominant force. There is an argument to be made for puff/marth at a human level, but with no losing matchups and a toolkit like he has, its hard to argue he's not the central character of the competitive melee scene
@paddyscott23285 жыл бұрын
Fox is mostly thought of as the best but not universally so. More and more top players think its Marth or Puff, and while I think it's still Fox the gap is very small, not huge like this video suggests.
@NeonDart5 жыл бұрын
@@paddyscott2328 well technically the gap probably is pretty big but that potential can't be reached by a human.
@paddyscott23285 жыл бұрын
@@NeonDart 1. That's arguably not true, since Marth and Puff have disjoints that could potentially nullify Fox's fast movement and hitbox generation, and if played perfectly by a machine would theoretically be able to space out anything Fox could do since they would not be overwhelmed by his speed. 2. Even if Fox is an order of magnitude ahead of the other characters on a theoretical level, that's not relevant to the human experience of the game.

Just came back to this video after a long time. I think the biggest thing about melee is that it actually feels like a sport and like you are the character on screen. It's like you express yourself with the character through skill and you don't beat your opponent's characters, you beat THEM. Kinda like in boxing, when you get your movement and skill high enough, no normal chump can ever even touch you and there really isn't a limit on how good you can get. Once you land a cool combo in melee and your friends pop off like DAMN - you are literally hooked for life.

Explaining *why* i love the things i love.

Jerk to be fair, almost everyone did that after smash 4 launched. i got the game, wanted to learn the ins and outs as i'm a bit older now to actually play smash competitively, choose sonic and pac-man as mains, played the hell out of for glory, got bored of that, went to a local tourney at my college, got 3rd, then decided to watch high level tournament play, a bunch of zerosuits/sheiks/diddys relying on cheap tactics, got ashamed of playing smash 4, started watching melee, and now i am trying to learn wavedashing. (still play smash 4, but it's like...meh...) yeah, so i guess i'm in the same boat as this guy. i actually feel a bit bad about it honestly, should i?

The way you described how you felt as you became a Smash fan was similar how I felt when I started understanding and watching more competitive DotA tournaments. It really is all about the stories! It's about rooting for the underdogs, watching them claw their way up from the lower brackets, and come to face the favorites - and then crush them. The clutch plays with unpopular and unexpected characters, the comebacks from what you thought was the point of no return. The personalities of each team member playing out in their teamwork, or lack thereof. It's all about the story.
