I always feel like my appearance is a little bit judged. I don’t wear designer labels, I’m very subdued, but I loveeeee fragrance and don’t mind spending money on it!! I always feel like I’m not bougie enough for them, but I seem to know more about the fragrances than they do, so it’s just all around uncomfy for me.

I just want the sales team to leave me alone unless I approach them first. It stresses me out soo much and i’m so baffled about how corporations think this is a good way to sell.

Sephora has the right idea. Wish the higher end stores would display all their niche fragrances on a shelf with test strips like Sephora does, and if you want to buy something, you flag the salesperson over to get it for you.

As an introvert, I find shopping at any counter very intimidating. Even furniture stores scare me. Online shopping was a dream come true for me. I have blind bought perfumes because I don't want the hovering salesperson. I like the way Ulta & Sephora are set up.

I felt this on such a personal level. I tell them 'thank you, if I need help I'll come by and ask you' and then they still proceed to follow me. Some people ARE so stingy with samples. I get so overwhelmed I just leave. I'd rather pay for samples online than deal with the sales associates.

Totally agree with you. Sometimes I get followed and watched in the store like they're afraid that I will steal something... Not a good feeling. At all.

Totally agree with all your points! I also hate when a salesperson is trying hard to sell but clearly doesn't have the right knowledge. The one I've heard the most is "oh, the EDP is just the same as the EDT but stronger" 🙄

Yes!!!! Or you say “this one reminds me of Gris Charnel from BDK”, and they say, “what’s BDK?” Like it must be some grungy thing. No actually it’s a popular niche house!

I don't know much but every time I'm in Ulta or Sephora I mention Fragrantica and the sales people look at me like I'm from another planet. No idea what it is or what it's about.

I agree with everything you said in this video. One thing that also annoys me is not being able to test the fragrance myself because they only have empty bottle displayed on the counter.

They hate me at the counter. I get strips, I split them into smaller ones, and with my own pen i label them. Then I put them carefully in my pocket, bags etc. and say thanks and leave. I will return later if one caught my nose.

One time when I was at Nordstrom this lady was really rushing me and being pushy. I asked to buy Chanel tendre (the pink one) EDT. She rang me up for the EDP so I said no I want the EDT and she was like ugh they’re the same!!!😤 and I was like ummm no they’re not. It was so stressful

Yes! I had a similar situation. One time I smelled the tester for a discontinued hypnotic poison flanker: loved it and wanted a bottle. They sold me the EDT. I went back to ask for a refund and they argued it was the same thing. I was like um no… I had to explain what flanker meant.

Agreed 100 %. It definitely described my more recent experience shopping at the perfume counter. Also, recently an Ulta store opened near where I live. I was so excited, but apparently they decided to be incredibly stingy with their testers, and there are so many perfumes that are out for sale with no testers in front. Very frustrating.

For the first question, I simply say “I’ll know when I find it.” They usually leave me alone after that until I request assistance.

This is exactly the same situation everywhere on planet earth, on each and every perfume/makeup/cosmetics counters. Recently I changed my attitude when I am surrounded with 3 or 4 sales asking me the same question in different wording, my answer is thank you very much my dear I will certainly call you if I need assistance.

Tester strips! I think your theory is right! I’m planning to go on a perfume trip this week and I’m taking my own strips! I have met perfume enthusiast shopping assistants who I had lovely chats with. I met a sales associate for a niche brand who didn’t know what Delina was! Clearly the person worked in retail but was not interested in perfume at all.

Ikr, it's crazy how we sometimes know more about the scents than they do. Was totally schooling the sales lady at the Creed counter in Nordstrom the other day, felt good😅😅😅😅

Totally agree with you on our own space when deciding. Im no longer SA, but when i was one, our manager kept their eyes on us on assisting customer. This is because the store could be under evaluating session by mystery shopper. This can affect the store's performances/KPI. However, not giving sample or providing test sheet is ridiculous, those testers are not coming from their bank lol. Unfortunately, where I live, we only allowed to return unopen box like in a super good condition only :(

OMG you so so CORRECT. Sometimes I hate the experience they give. That’s why I haven’t gone in store to test or buy lately. I order samples and we shouldn’t have to. Also you have to beg for samples. It’s CRAZY glad to know it’s not only my experience tho 🤦🏾‍♀️

I'm a bit different because I'm always on a mission for a particular perfume, and the salesgirls always end up loving me. Haha! I go in to definitely buy a perfume. They get a great sale. But I get you Ilythia, because you are in a different position to me. 🌺☺️

I went this weekend to NM and this lady was hounding me so I tested her knowledge and I said "I'm not looking for anything girly" so she proceeded to show me and start spraying Honour Woman 😡 I told her NO NO NO, that has tuberose and its girly meaning female leaning and I walked away. I wish they were trained better.

Everything you said is 💯 percent true. Good to know I’m not the only one experiencing this. 9/10 times I walk out because my anxiety goes through the roof and they make me feel so judged. Like just leave me alone so I can sniff in peace 😊

I went to a Perfumery shop to test a few fragrances and maybe buying if i would love something.what shocked me was that the salesman told me that i'm allowed to test only 5 fragrances.....

I miss how Nordstrom use to have empty mini sample bottles and you could decant perfumes on your own. Sephora use to give out samples but not anymore. I feel so guilty asking for samples these days. Didn’t use too

the first reason is 100% why i avoid going into Macy, Neiman’s etc even though they have more options. I hate feeling like i’m wasting a salespersons time since I just want to take my time and smell, and maybe not buy right there and then.

Judgy Sales People!! This was always the reason I never went to the perfume counters. I’ve never had a problem shopping at Dillards, but they don’t carry the luxury niche lines.

So true! Although.. I will say that as someone who worked in fragrance for 6 years, many companies forbid making a sample from a tester bottle, or don’t manufacture samples at all.

Yesss I totally forgot to mention this. When I worked in retail, it wasn't necessarily the retailer who decided if we received or could make a tester as well as samples. But I think that's absurd that they don't offer a small sample. Were they always this stingy? I only recently got into fragrance

Agree with everything. But I guess there’s no way for them to know how much you know already :) Maybe let them know politely you’d like to just test them on your own to see if you like something. I don’t like going to counters for the reason that I feel kinda forced to buy something. I have ended up buying stuff that I wasn’t really planning on picking up at the time. I just wanted to smell them lol

Regarding "What are you looking for?" I once told a sales associate in Saks 5th that I liked fougere and gourmand fragrances, and they told me that they didn't carry those, but I could check out by Killian.

Girl I so feel you. Shopping perfumes is my happy place, I go there to feel good, unwind, and hopefully find something I love enough to take home with me. I just usually need space and time to smell around. Went down to my local ulta the other day cause I wanted to pick up absolutely blooming, but just wanted a little sniff to be sure. To my shock all the bottles were locked up, including the testers. And this one girl had the key 🔑 just opening what you pointed at and rumbling on. My experience was so ruined. Pretty sure am not gonna be shopping any perfume at ulta this year cause they've really killed the whole experience for me😭😭😭😭😭

Quite frankly , truth be told, you are rambling and whining. If you walked in, introduced yourself to the sales associate, discussed what you’d like you shopping/sampling endeavors to be … I think you’d be very satisfied with the experience. The sales associate wants you to be happy, happy customers spend money. Help them make you happy!
