a little gatekeeping is ok now and then. otherwise words get gentrified out of any meaning and the subcultures that hold their own names dear are diluted by mainstream commercial surface deep fashion statements until the original subculture is barely detectable anymore, functionally extinct. cross pollination with other subcultures is wonderful; losing the very meaning of a movement is not

I think it’s quite important to establish boundaries on what a word is supposed to mean, like "goth" in this instance. Without boundaries, the word becomes meaningless, and all the people within the group also become scattered, which is the opposite of what a word for categorization should do. It should unify people with shared interests and passions. P.S. You look awesome with the new dyed hair, and thanks for the music recommendation. I like to broaden my music taste. :)

Fields of the Nephilim and Sisters of Mercy were the Oasis/Blur of goth clubs in the old days. The lyrics of Fields play more with occultism and religion while Sisters are more artistic and introspective, I guess?

People at my school say: Melanie Martinez is goth. I actually am depressed and I do not wear dark clothes and kids still call me "Emo" or "Goth". People also say: Witchcraft is goth. I am a practicing Wiccan/Pagan.

Oh yeah, those are all common misconceptions about goths. Melanie martinez goth?? That is crazy, it’s like every artist who is different from the norm is automatically goth. It seems like people just use goth as a term for people with depression now, which is also far from correct

Ive been a Type O Negative fan for a long time. I tend to like dark clothing & make up looks. I also like a lot of different music, even some rap. But yes Type O Negative is frequently on my rotation of music. I haven't heard some of these bands but I want to because Im a music lover!

I love The Cure! There is a lot of discussion whether it’s goth or not, which is why I didn’t name it in this video. Still great music anyway :) Aw I used to listen to Closer from Nine inch nails, I don’t listen to them very often though. Maybe I should give it another try!

The Cure has goth songs, yeah, but they also made 'Friday I'm in Love' and I am no expert on goth music, but I think that's quite at the other end of the spectrum? I mean, two acoustic guitars and a cheerful melody? I always imagined a nun clapping along that song.

I would be careful when disassociating goths with suffering from depression because while they are not mutual there are actually goths who struggle with mental health (I'm one here) 😔

emo (these are pop punk iirc but household names to an emo): My Chem, Pierce The Veil, Sleeping with Sirens punk (I’m not punk so I might be wrong): Dead Kennedys, Green Day(?), Wire grunge: Nirvana, Blink-182, Alice in Chains scene: 3arelyhuman, 3OH!H3, crunk & metalcore nu metal: Deftones, Korn, Limp Bizkit goth: ULTRA SUNN, Lebanon Hanover, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus just various examples of the music from the four subcultures from a goth who kinda likes em all.

I dated a Goth guy back in the 90's and one the more unknown bands he liked was Flowers of the Sacrifice. I would also say Inkubus Sukkubus are a good Goth that are worth a listen. On a side note I love your Cat and Raven sitting on Skulls ornaments.

I will listen to London after Midnight, and Type O Negative. Even though I am fascinated with Neoclassical Darkwave, I can encourage the viewer and listner to listen to Rasputina, Dark Sanctuary, and Dead Can Dance.

No, not getting tired of you hon - I can't imagine that happening anytime soon. As far as goth goes, yeah people do confuse it with lots of other things but it is indeed a music subculture as I understand it. I do like some goth music (so part of me is goth) but I don't really dress the part. I guess its because of my shape - I'm a little under 6ft tall and big built and so a lot of long flowing clothing doesn't really suit me (though I do have some of that stuff). A common misconception that I tend to fall into myself sometimes is the difference between goth and gothic. For me there is certainly a difference between the two (one can read Poe all day in a castle in Transylvania and not be a goth, for example)! The mental illness thing? I think some people draw a similarity between the Romantic cult of suffering and goth - the idea that Romantic poets and other artists suffered for their art, their depiction of darkly beautiful things on occasion, the idea of the tortured artist. And some Romantic era artists do show signs that they may have been mentally ill and that they may have been self medicating with opium etc. How that gets conflated with goth which is a music subculture? I don't know, but I would imagine it would be something to do with the fashion and the emotional content of certain songs/bands - the shirts and jackets/coats stuff like that can be evocative of that sort of time. Whether or not any of that is true I don't know, its just how it seems to me. :) The bands you mention? Good staples of goth, all of them. While I like Joy Division, his voice can make me feel a little sad at times, but I don't think its necessarily meant to be sad - some of their stuff just has emotional content which is a different thing. I suppose if there is an emotion/mindset that sums up the culture for me it would be...intelligent introspection. All the goth people I've met have been intelligent and have a degree of self awareness to them - they wonder about themselves, as do I. While that can get one down at times, neither introspection nor depression are exclusively goth traits of course, and being goth does not mean you are/have to be either of these things - its all about the music at the end of the day, I think it may attract a certain personality type but that isn't the only thing that attracts said personality type, nor is that personality type the only one that is attracted to the music. A complex lot, aren't we?! Anyway! Bit of an essay, but there it is! I followed you on Instagram today so...there's that, lol, and I hope this finds you well. :) x

Thank you so much, that is very kind! I agree that there is a difference between gothic and goth, which are indeed often confused. That is a good explanation for why people could think that goths are mentally unwell, very interesting! There are definitely people who feel attracted to the goth music because of certain emotional songs, but I wish people would see that just because I am goth, it doesn’t mean that I’m depressed or unwell. For me, being goth means being happy, because the music and the fashion make me feel free, confident and joyful!

@@JayneGoth Indeed, and that is a beautiful thing. :) I think as well that some people think that goth music can somehow "make" a person depressed, which is nonsense - true depression is something within you that you carry with you into everything I think. Its like saying that violent films make people violent - what causes people to be violent is already within them, its part of ones makeup crossed with things that happen at formative ages for the most part from what I can tell, though that is an over-generalisation of course. Didn't mention it before, but I love your hair - it's the imperfections that make it perfect. x

i dont dress 'goth' all the time or do goth makeup at all, but i consider myself goth. I listen to goth music and metal. I dye my hair black and wear black but also hippie, witchy, boho, sexy. Being goth is a state of mind not what you look like or what you listen to.

I think even people like Billie Eilish know that they’re not Goth even though they feel they have the right to steal certain elements of the goth aesthetic but then again we had this problem in the 90s with Marilyn Manson so it’s not really a new phenomenal.

@@JayneGoth There is still some gray area, but it is so much smaller than before! I think a lot might have to do with regional differences as well. Like I mentioned before in my area (Coatesville PA) growing up goth wasn't really music based it was all appearance and mindset. But when I hit college age that's when it was suddenly music based.......at least in my general area, I can't speak for other regions.

I think that person could definitely call themselves a goth. Or anything really, I think everyone can just decide for themselves what they would love to be called (as long as they like the music / subculture). If you listen to goth, you can call yourself a goth. You can also be part of any other alternative subculture depending on what music, lifestyle and mindset you like. The clothing is just an extra thing, you don’t have to dress a particular way to be goth.
