Loved this video. My favorite orchids are the minis although we have a Cattleya that is rather large and getting bigger.
@Orchideria3 жыл бұрын
Hi Juan, Thank you for commenting! I apprecaite it. Cattleyas can be quite impressive sometimes when they really start growing. Have you seen the mini version of Cattleyas? They are soooo cute!!

My two minis that I have had for about seven months have each grown new leaves and many new roots but no spikes as yet! I repotted them after they were done blooming into four inch orchid pots. Do not leave a mini orchid in that tiny two inch pot! That is for increased sales only. My minis had not grown anything when I put them into their new pots but they began to grow leaves and roots just a couple of weeks after they were repotted into the four inch orchid pots. I have to say that it was not easy finding an orchid pot that small in the area where I live but I did find some on Amazon. They are actually double pots that have a slotted pot inside a regular type of plastic pot. I wasn’t too sure about them at first but the minis like them so….so far so good. My issue is that my regular size orchids are both in bloom , the new one and the older one. and my minis show no sign of a spike! What is wrong with?? Are minis more difficult to get to spike??

Mini Phals are potted in moss because the pot is too small to accommodate other types of medium such as bark. For a plant this small, you don’t want something that requires watering every day. There is nothing wrong with sphagnum. Place it loosely in the pot and water when the medium begins to dry out.

Thanks for the video about mini phals. I just got one at an orchid show. One question I have is about using garlic water as a fertilize for orchids. Would you recommend using that as a fertilizer?
@bettapalfish90573 жыл бұрын
Hi Amanda! I am glad you mentioned the amount of roots for mini Phals. My ascofinetia hybrid has more roots than the mini Phalaenopsis. My roots are a nice size and strong. The leaves are numerous and only shed every two years. My question is the leaves are large and starting to lean. Without a large number of roots like a standard Phal what size pot? Currently they are in the carousel pots by repotme,also known as orchitop pots which are 3.75 inches. Mix is Imperial gold from repotme. Great for my environment. What sized pot would you pick?
@Orchideria3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bettapal, I'm so sorry about just responding your comment now. For some reason unknown to me, KZbin held your comment for review and I only saw it now. I've had others complain about my comment anti-spammer AI being overly harsh. I'm glad I saw your comment now. Better late than never, right? As for the ascofinetia, I would keep the same size pot. It won't grow much bigger than it already is. There is a technique that is called a Fukiran, which mounts the orchid in a moss ball on top the pot which lets a lot of air through. I'm not sure about your environment, but if it's humid, it might be better than a pot. Even without the large roots and heavier leaves, they won't need a bigger pot. The carousel pots are good at not falling over (if they are the ones I think they are, with a platter-like plate attached to them -- I'll check them to be sure we're talking about the same thing.)

How do you do know if you have a mini or if it is just a baby Phal? I love your channel!
@Orchideria3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mandy, Thank you for the comment and for watching my videos. I appreciate it. A mature orchid will have a flower, even if it is small. In this video about what to expect on online buying, ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGioqpmMj72fraM ) I walk through the stages of the orchid's life in the context of when to buy it. I think that will give you a better idea of how close it is to blooming and if it's a mini or not. It's not an exact answer, but close. I hope it helps.

Growing season is in spring and after the blooming stage. Plant focuses on roots and new leaves

I have 3 rootless phalaenopsis orchids that I put it alittle water to grow some roots, also they have droopy leaves. Can you tell me approximately how long does it take to recover, to see some new roots, weeks, months, years?? Thank you.
@Orchideria3 жыл бұрын
Hi Moonstone, I'm sorry about your orchid. In general, it will take about a month to start growing a new root. You can purchase some root hormone products which stimulate growth, and the results will be quicker. For rootless orchids, I recommend the video about sphag-n-bag, which is a method to raise humidity around the leaves until the roots grow. There is a video about it on my channel. I believe it's under the playlist section under the category "problems".

Hi Muhammed, Yes, absolutely! Sometimes coconut has a high salt content, so make sure you rinse it out before hand (as in soak...for a loooooong time). Other than that, it's perfect.
