Update this new Berkey “Go” model seems slightly more for survival shituation than everyday efficiency, im looking to upgrade to the next size metal vessel that the berkey knockoff brands offer for 200$ that hold 2 filters for twice the flow rate but is still small enough to fit in my little wagon.

@@123Homefree Easily can convert shit into gas guys. Biogas is easy to make with a biodigester, all you need is water, poo, airtight containers, cheap plumbing tubes and valves from lowes and time (3 months to start) and the bacteria in the poo will grow to the trillions and they will eat up 2/3rds of the organic matter left and fart out methane gas, which then can be used as natural gas in converted engines. 1. You can collect rainwater, e.g. with a tarp on a hoop. Problem is, there is a lot of crud in the air, and in a SHTF situation you need to think about chemical or radioactive fallout. IMPORTANT: The way to remove fallout is to mix water with clean (uncontaminated) dirt. Then filter through cloth, then through a normal water filter. 2. You can make disposable filters by mixing plaster of Paris with other ingredients (sand, charcoal) and then cast it into a container like a can. 3. The book 'The Compleat Distiller' by Nixon & McCaw contains plans for building a compact and effective still from copper pipe.

A very important conversation, you're right that most people don't have these sorts of basic survival skills. You can read all the books and watch a ton of KZbin videos but there's a big difference in living it like you do. You're doing a great job in terms of: Clean Air & Water, Shelter/Warmth/Sleep, and Food which gets you to good health, some amount of security, access to resources and property, you're also forming a sense of community and friendships with all of your fans and supporters which is now providing you some respect, recognition and status. Dare I say you're getting to that self-actualization stage. Maslow would be very proud of your accomplishments, let alone the rest of us. As I watch your videos I can see that most of them cover some topic along the Pyramid of Needs. Btw Berkey Filters ought to be sponsoring you Aaron, you're their perfect spokesman.

Be careful of Berkey non-customer service. They had a run on filters that were bad, and didn't tell anyone And when your filter wasn't working, they required you to go buy food coloring and do tests... a total hassle. So much so, I dislike them as a company because they try to push their errors off onto other people. I used to use them, and then stopped -- years ago. I might return, though, but only begrudgingly. If you try and stock up, test ALL your filters before storing them, because if they have a bad run and you have one of them in your storage, you won't know for a long time, and they lack the character to just fix the problems they create. Even so, their filter system might be worth it, but caveat emptor (buyer beware).

Keep in mind the dirtier your water is, the less it will be able to filter over its lifetime. With live water I find I need to clean the outside of the filter (a layer of living films builds), or else it starts to filter incredibly slow. I keep all my old ones in storage if I need to squeeze out some extra life later on.

Use the ancient navaho method. Get a clean teracotta plant pot, and plug the drainage hole with a lump of cypress wood (antibacterial). Then place it into a clean bucket so that it hovers over a lower resevoir. Fill the pot with your dirty water and over a few hours the water will filter through the micropores of the teracotta and perculate into the bottom of the bucket as pure filtered drinking water. No parts need replacing. And one teracotta pot will filter water for the rest of your life. You can make a pot by firing a clay mixture, 1 part fine woodash and one part clay. Mix to a putty like mixture and mould into a pot that fits over a bucket. Once fired its ready to fill with water and perculate. Xx

If you use an efficient dehumidifier, you could use excess solar after topping up your battery to create water. It may keep the inside of your wagon comfortable through the night as well if humidity is a problem. Would not work in deserts. I wondered why you didn't use a mini-cow and it is probably because sheep require less water as well as producing wool. What about h pylori, though? Is the bacteria in sheep milk as safe as cow's milk? If you only had a single mini-cow it would produce at least a gallon of milk, but would get lonely.

I agree, those other videos don't hold the camera on the leaves and plant long enough to learn what it really looks like!

Very cool! Can you basically put river water in this and drink it or do you need to treat it with iodine tablets or do some other kind of treatment before the Berkey can make it drinkable?

Milk is the original water distiller. This and wine are how peopke made sure their water was safe to drink.

@@neva.2764 Goats and sheep (not sure about cows) can drink brackish water that humans are not able to drink, but humans can drink the milk. There was a Quaker man in Arizona who used to graze his goats in the desert and then kept running into refugees wandering the desert. He found he could not carry enough water to help the refugees, but the goats could provide drink. Though as I recall, he and other Quakers were stashing water at way stations out there to help people. He wrote a book. I'll try to search out the title and post here.

@@neva.2764 The book is called Goatwalking by Jim Corbett. Not sure if it is still in print, but if it is, it is well worth reading. It is a very earnest, and sometimes cranky, manifesto about a return to nomadism much as Aaron advocates for. Although it wasn't the first book I read about it, it really stuck with me.

@@123Homefree so I got some experience in making distillation aparatus' if we made a copper or stainless vessel that slides into a go sun you could effectively distill with it. Just ideas I have been kicking around they make a solar water boiler like a go sun if you made an adapter for the lid it could be converted easily

@@jesseready5667 yes i tried to make my gosun into a distiller by corking the tube with a copper condensing coil coming out but it didnt produce much at all, im assuming because it doesnt have enough water surface space to evaporate off enough steam to produce efficient amounts of distillate.

Hi Aaron I saw a wonderful solar lamp. Do you have one? If not do you need one? I will try and send the link, see if you like it. Might be nice to have one or two for your cart. Stay safe.

I'd imagine another filter first, for steams, lakes, ect... Then filter through that one.. To keep the longevity of service. Otherwise it would go bad sooner. Is there a way to... (Idk the word) "Back flush" the filter? Thanks for the update on the red dye.

Yeah you can backflush and even scrub the outside to lengthen the lifespan!!

I gently brush the surface of my Berkey’s then back flush them with a garden hose adapter Home Depot etc have a female garden hose x 5/16 or so barbed that will let you shove a rubber hose onto it and on to the stem of the filter. As water from the garden hose flows backwards through the filter it will flush it. As it’s flushing wrap your hands or a rag around the filter to force the water to have to go though all of the filter.
