Went homeless. Done Guerrilla Grazing by choice ever since

Aaron Fletcher has grazed his sheep and lived off the land as a traveling shepherd for 12 years. He calls it guerrilla grazing (a step above guerrilla gardening, he says) and he lets his sheep graze - with permission- public parks and side lots. Homeless by choice, he offers his services to small farms in exchange for food or a place to stay (though half his calories come from his sheeps’ milk).
Watch the other two stories with Aaron Fletcher's:
- Part II: Staying Healthy, diet & lifestyle tips • Homeless shepherd shar...
- Part III: Radical simplicity & autarky on a solo wagon micro-farm • Homeless shepherd star...
Aaron lives in a tiny metal cart home pulled by his sheep he has a bed. It packs a refrigerator/evaporative cooler, a shower (he uses a pesticide sprayer to pump up the water pressure), power (solar panel), sun oven, a mailbox stove for heat, bicycle tire wheels and a corrugated plastic roof.
Fletcher makes cheese and butter from his sheep milk and forages for seeds, fruits, vegetables and herbs. He’s created a map for foragers in his region. He makes some money with his scythe business - cutting noxious weeds for locals -, but he insists he’s not interested in making money and just hopes to serve as an example for other homeless interested in guerrilla grazing.

I met Aaron last summer, grazing his sheep in Talent pastures. You just can't get more real than Aaron. He is what you see, a free human being, away from the politics, food crisis, and more that could be mentioned. This man sets a new standard of life. He is courageous and dedicated to showing us a new way, one that is in harmony with nature, and one which does not feed the corporate greed. He is a master teacher, and an innovator. Thank you Aaron!

His solutions are innovative and brilliant. I am saddened but not surprised that his actions cannot be seen for what they are. Consumerism and the disposal society is what is killing the earth. He has opted out. And to the people who think all homeless people are addicts. Ridiculous. Most homelessness is about lack of affordable accessible housing. No boarding/rooming houses anymore. And triple the rent to move in places. Tied to the system. Slave to the system.

Only one downside: this eloquent fellow is hygienic in every way, but it just 'looks' a grubby way of life. It's hard to keep clothing spotless when you handle livestock. Maybe it's the matted hair, or showing sheep poo catchers and solar gourmet cooking in the same segment. Yet, fascinating and informative to see the huge number of environmentally benign gadgets tucked away in that clever wagon. He's good to the animals and they feed him without slaughter ( presumably Mama Sheep, who became a nice jacket, died of old age). Kirstin, thanks for this unexpected gem in your series.

Wow! This is so clever! How on Earth has Aaron learnt everything he knows?! He doesn't seem to have internet, although he has a website. So, on his phone? So very resourceful! And very brave too, I think. Because with no dog to guard him, what if anyone comes to attack him or steals or trashes his stuff when he isn't there. He must therefore always be near his little wagon. Another thought: For a woman this would probably be more risky... Amazing, those clever stoves and ovens! Do we have this in Europe?... Very interesting to see that now that he is successful with his life-style and ventures he will most likely never want to live any other way! He has really worked it out how to be practically self-sufficient. Admirable! What a find for your videos!

if you notice he has a rifle and pistol i think so he has the capacity to understand he needs to protect himself -we used to have an old gentleman in georgia called the goat man that travelled from 1 end of the state to the other with about 20 goats with a wagon about 2 times larger than arons and he did it for many years even had a wife and children that stayed home so he did have a home base but i think in the late 70s or mid 80s some no goods robbed him and killed him and a bunch of his goats -the man nave hurt a fly but thats what happened to him

about 70% of your diet can come from dairy sheep if you are willing to go on a keto diet and get most of your calories from sheep butter. the remaining 30% comes from meat, organ and a small amount of carbs needed to optimize the keto diet that you can get from raising other animals or selling the lambs once they are just old enough or once they are old enough that they are able to produce lambs themselves. a benefit of raising 3 dairy sheep and a dairy ram is that you dont really need the skills to identify wild mushrooms as its often good enough to gorilla garden mushrooms by ordering mushrooms blending them then pouring them into suitable logs or areas while getting the rest of your calories and protein directly or indirectly from the sheep.

Really funny thing is I have been a farmer my entire life, not like corn fields for miles or other mega agriculture but like beef cattle (as the only real source of income), and chickens, and rabbits and goats, and pigs, 3 acre gardens, and 90 acre hay fields all to keep our family going by producing our own food for the most part and a modest income. That said I always looked at the sides of the road from our farm to the next town thinking more grass grows their than in our hay fields. Imagine if that grass was utilized the way this man does. Someone could graze in told numbers of sheep right down the sides of the road. I mean it's 25 miles between towns here with 50 feet of road side grass almost continuously on each side. I did the math that's 151.515acres on each side of that road

My mind is blown to see a documentary about my friend Aaron by one of my favorite documentarians. We met in Ashland in 2o13 when he was starting a hostel that would allow homeless or housefree folks to live in a building in exchange for community service in Ashland, Medford (Oregon) or otherwise. I was a "nomad" or "housefree" at the time as well by choice and as an experiment. We have kept in touch periodically through the years. Aaron is the real deal. So glad to see him on here ! And my mind blown. I met him before the sheep and wagon project started. I helped out with the project which met a lot of resistance from the inevitable real estate overlords. He made an indelible impression on my life and inspired me to (attempt) to make a work-trade hostel in my hometown of Bellingham, Washington when I returned. I feel proud to see him continuing to live True to his Vision and Philosophy ☺️

When a homeless guy says he’s had articles of clothing for 4 years, it’s like having something for 30 years for the typical suburbanite. Don’t be fooled by his appearance either. This guy is a functional genius. 99% of America would fail at this if forced to live this way. He’s basically engineering and re-engineering his survival on a daily basis.

I agree. His genius is functional minimalism, using available resources for maximum functionality. He will survive when others perish. Inspiringly, he doesn't prep just for himself but for society at large. The arrogant will run to him when their comfortable lives are interrupted by war, famine, pestilence or societal collapse and unlike many preppers, he will help them while many preppers would threaten them to keep them away.

@@tboniusmaximus3047 NASA can use thinkers like him. He understands functional minimalism and bets his life on it every day. This is exactly what NASA needs for a MARS mission where things will need to be re-purposed, reused and recycled for minimal waste otherwise death is a guarantee. Don't think for a second he wouldn't be hired or studied by NASA. They literally scour the Earth for free-thinkers like him.

What is the concept of work anyway? God says if you don't work you don't eat according to what this guy's doing it looks like he's working to eat he's not being lazy doing anything bumming on the street and begging he is literally using his head his hands and his feet so people who have stupid comments like the one below just shows how ignorant and shallow they are. I like to see them try to survive for six and a half years on the street! This is out to all those people who live on the streets who are on the streets not because of anything they have done but because of circumstances that have gone wrong to stand strong in the Lord Christ and live a decent good life beat kind and compassionate to others and stick to God's word and believe in him and only him and lean on him and trust in him for all things... Cuz with Christ all things are possible. But this guy right here he is not lazy even tell and he is working to live
