Hey Guys! Last video for 2020. Sound is horrible, sorry about that. I did what I could with the audio cleaning features. A combination of bad placement and a degraded lav-mic system. I've heard that Santa is probably bringing some new equipment for tonight.
Taking you through common questions and issues regarding the OG9-5. I hope you will find a good OG9-5 out there. Please leave a comment if you have additional tips and information that others would benefit from.
SID display with issues is between MY1998 and MY2003. ( not only between MY2002 and MY2003 that I say in the video )
Merry Christmas and a Happy new year. See you all in 2021!

Everything up to the 185hp 2.3t has the gt17 turbo. Everything above has the mitsubishi td04. A big point with the 95 is rust in front of the rear wheels, behind the plastic lining.

These older Saab wagons are so sweet looking. I have had two 90’s Volvo wagons and I’m still driving one now. The Saabs seemed a little more upscale, but the Volvos are much easier to work on and find parts for. If I ever come across an 04-05 9-5 wagon for a great price and in great shape it will sure be tempting

Love these cars, but youre so right to say that proof of maintenance is vital. I bought an 07 Aero sport combi from the original owner. As the car aged he felt he could save some money doing repairs himself--Long story short he cheaped out and did a poor job--Ive spent my two months of ownership fixing his mistakes and half assed jobs...

All great points! One year ago I experienced an ECU malfunction on my 2003 9-5 station wagon that involved a loss of power and communication with the ECU while driving. The problem turned out to be corrosion located in the main wire harness connector plug under the hood. The main ECU wire harness runs along the back firewall of the engine compartment and has a large male/female connector located just left of the anti-skid modulator under a black plastic rectangular cover. Over time I believe it was the power supply pin that becomes corroded and disrupts power to the ECU. The green corrosion will be very clear to see under good light. It must be very lightly scraped from pin, great care must be use. Extreme caution must be used because these male connector pins are extremely thin and fragile. I used a high quality anti-corrosion spray (Fluid Film) on both male and female connectors and reassembled. The problem has not returned since the cleaning. I also have a 2002 9-5 sedan and decided to inspect the same connector plug and found a small amount to corrosion on the same male connector pin. I performed the same cleaning and anti corrosion treatment as a preventative measure. The cars run great and stand the test of time. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone.

I have owned 3 OG9-5’s. Wonderful cars. Interior of the Dame Edna versions are a bit poorer built (material quality). Garret turbo lasted until 180.000 kms in 3 cars. In the 2006 Aero I sold it with original turbo at 200.000 kms. I own an NG9-5 now. OG9-5 vector/aero seats are the best Saab seats ever.

Certain areas of the dame edna version is nice and look much more modern compared to the pre dame edna models. I never mentioned this in the video but already in 2004 they started to remove things to save money. Such as the net pocket on the B pillar for example. Very annoying.. :-/ But that's the way it is.

I have a 2005 3.0 tid estate and a 2000 griffin estate. I find as long as you check the oil and change it regularly and do the proper services you have little problems. My griffin is on 190.000 miles and going strong. My diesel 3.0 is on 110.00 miles and pulls like new. i am going to change the dual mass flywheel on it soon as it is original as is the clutch. I only just changes the discs as they too were original. What i love about the 3.0 diesel is .. it does not sound like a diesel. So smooth and powerful. Both just passed there MOT's here in the UK with no problems.

Took me a while to figure out what was best for me in regards to equipment package on my saab. I came to the follow conclusion: Aero: Sporty, great handling, stiff suspension and some but not all luxery equipment inside. Essentially this is what I would go for if my trips were 2-3 hrs long with breaks. The chassi is lowered and the wheels are wide so there´s quite some sound in the cupé while driving. Vector Griffin: The half-sporty luxery model. It has about everything you could ask for in an old car with the vector griffin package. It doesn´t feel as sporty and quick as the aero (different engine etc) but it drives more smoothly, less sound in the cupé and overall a great option for longer trips. Rainsensors, reversesensors etc. It´s all there. Vector regular: Again this is similar to the Aero but with a smaller engine. Aeros are hard to come by and if you´re looking for a sporty-ish car with MOST equipments, this is a good option. However make sure it´s the B235 engine and not the B205 as the latter produces less power and less tourque which results in higher rpm on highways. OB S: The suspension wears out after a while on the sport chassi models thus causing it to become VERY soft and I recommend switching the back sus to harder ones so you can fill up the trunk without the car leaning backwards. Linear (all versions): As cruising goes, I´d say this is actually the nicest cruiser version. The suspension is softer, wheels not as wide, less sound in the cupé. It doesn´t handle quite as well as the versions with sport chassi and this version also has textile seats. I´ve concluded that, YES leather seats are nice BUT from 06 onward the leather is of low quality and need a bit of maintenance or it will give and rip. In terms of engines, there are linears with the bigger engine which is nice as it allows you to drive comfortably with low RPMs on highways. Linear Griffin is probably the most family/cruiser friendly version of them all. All in all when it comes to Saab cars the main thing to remember is, these cars put out a lot of effect compared to similar cars from that era. This is great but it also requires more frequent oil changes. Saab requires more maintence on a regular basis but less big services as opposed to Volvo for example.

Thanks very much mate, it really helped me. I just bought an 06 9-5 from a dealer but don't know much about them, I pick it up on Saturday. So far I found out this has a B235 motor with a T7 management system. It is an auto and is not an Aero but I don't know which specification it is other than that. It has leather seats and alloy wheels with 215/55 tyre size. I found out some specialist workshops offer performance tuning for them, which doesn't cost much and some of them are officially licensed by Saab, like the Hirsch tune but that is a bit more expensive. I'm going to get a tuning upgrade along with a full check and service next week before I even drive it around. I asked about some basic performance improvement parts for these and the workshop suggested mainly the small turbo is limited and an upgrade is probably the most significant step. I didn't know the standard small turbo tends to fail at 150-180,000 kms and this car has done about 172,000 so it actually might be necessary to replace the turbo anyway. Even if it hasn't failed yet it is likely to in the not-too-distant future. So I might pre-emptively get that turbo upgrade next week. Thanks, it was important to know about this and it makes my mind up about a significant upgrade.

The only achilles heel from my experience is problems that come from infrequent oil changes, (timing chain going bad and rod knock). But these issues are guaranteed to be avoided with frequent oil changes because of sludge in earlier model years (98-03). My 03 9⁵ suffered from both of these major issues because of infrequent oil changes during previous ownership. The first time I changed the oil, problems came knocking on my door one after the other, that's when I knew. I'm still going to buy another 9⁵, preferably between 04 and 05 since they don't suffer the dreaded sludge issues the previous years had. Those are the best model years in my opinion in terms of reliability. Great video.

I have an '05 ARC wagon and an '06 SportCombi with 185k and 170k miles respectively. To the author's point, these cars are getting old; the mechanicals are stone axe reliable if the car has been maintained. An oil changed saab at this age will only give in on soft and wear parts. I prefer many of Saab's engineering and ergonomics even over my wife's Audi A6. Seats, HVAC, greenhouse sightlines, power/economy and cargo capacity are superior to anything I've ever found. Where I'm finding I'm spending a lot of time in upkeep are soft parts; suspension and subframe bushings, motor mounts, hoses, hardening oring seals etc. The other issue is situational living in the US rust belt. The '05 will eventually become unsafe, the '06-'09 appears to have a rocker panel redesign which helped with the dogleg rust issue on '05 and earlier models. Parts availablity is good; knowing a Saab mechanic is a must for proper diagnosis using the tech II equipment. As for comparing the 02-05 and the '06-'09 Edna designs, I prefer the interior quality of the '05, with proper Saab gauges and less terrible hard plastic. The '06 exterior has aged nicely and is optioned out a bit better and has the 260hp, bigger brakes, sport suspension which makes driving it more fun. Good luck out there finding a good one.

I've owned 2 OG 9-5 wagons. All of his information is correct. For the U.S., market everything is 2.3t (B234E) or Aero (B234R) or the V-6. Both of my B234Es had turbo failures before 150K miles- one at 125K. One car got a non-Garrett GT1752 replacement which last for at least another 120K miles. The timing chains failed as I didn't replace them in time. The second car got a used Mitsubishi TD04. We'll see how long it lasts. Both car had SID pixel failures and alarm failures. Just has he told us would happen. He didn't suggest checking the hood lift struts ( and the hatch struts on the 5-Door) . If the struts are really bad, you'll notice it right away. Going bad, you won't find it until the weather gets cold. The hood struts are an easy replacement. The hatch struts are more complicated but can be done. Overall,a great video for the SAAB shopper.

Something breaks into the mechanism and you can’t pull the belt out. I’ve changed the driver belt 2 times, front passenger 1 time, left back passenger 1 time, middle back passenger 1 month ago. Only the right back passenger belt is original. Another problem: these parts seems to become rare to find.
