Sweet and lovely Chiang mai! I feel nostalgic… Songtau are, somewhat, exotic, but way overpriced and… inconvenient… even hazardous…

I wouldn't say the Song Taew's are hazardous.....now if we are talking about Tuk Tuks then definitely :)

But still: would such “public” transport be allowed in Canada? Of course, not! They are the violations of the sanitary hygiene norms of commuting and very expensive to boot…

Petr- Song Taew's are definitely not expensive if you know the pricing system. They are way cheaper then Tuk Tuk's and Taxis. Rides anywhere in the old city and just outside are only 30 baht (less then $1) that's not expensive.

Dear MindfulWanderlust! 30 baht - it is already ONE USD!!! One can buy so many nice and tasty things for that sum of money!!! Crouching, climbing on it… what about the people with special needs (in the wheel chair, for example)?.. And the senior citizens… One ride for the travel experience is, somewhat, - “why not”… But it is not the commuting quality admissible means of transportation! They must be gradually removed… Besides: I am not sure about Chiang Mai, but here in Tula those private drivers mafias completely destroyed the “public” and any transport… they wouldn’t allow anything good to appear. Those private minivans they keep in the courtyards of the apartment blocks, meanwhile, normal transport went from bad to worse… What is the situation in Chiang Mai: had the local authorities ever tried to create normal public transport commuting? What was the reaction of the sang taw owners - drivers?.. Do you have any idea???
