Anyone in Kauai who told you it is pronounced "poke" like rhymes with "oak" was either misinformed or they were pulling your leg. In the Polynesian language spoken in Hawaii, poke, which rhymes with okay, means “chunk” or “something cut away,” usually by crosscutting. There is no silent "e" in Hawaiian. @@TravelTipsbyLaurie

Some tips! For a hole-in-the-wall place to go with amazing food in Kapa'a, head to Tiki Tacos. I'm not kidding; the food there is amazing. Try the kalua pig taco! If you're in Kapa'a and want to stop at the Java Kai location there, you can park in the back very easily to avoid the problems with traffic, but it's true that traffic through town can be very slow. On the north shore, take some time to mini golf at Mini Golf and Gardens at Anaina Hou for the most scenic mini-golf experience you may ever have. And try the Village Snack Shop and Bakery for a mahi sandwich that tastes like it just came out of the ocean; even better, go where Laurie did and try Kilauea Bakery and Pizza! :)
