I rescued my Pom (Dallas) in 2012, when he was 5. He has been the greatest dog I've ever had and lives MUCH better than I do. No one believes he's 13. He's very spry, incredibly strong (loves long walks in good weather) and, aside from dental issues, is extremely healthy. He is on the larger side of the breed, 12 lbs (I assume that to be roughly 5.5 kg?) The process for me was also quick. A friend of mine was head of a no kill shelter and the cost was pretty low. He was out of foster care and home within two weeks. I was pretty lucky - there were only a few things that needed retraining (sitting, staying and socializing with kids, men and other dogs.) To this day he gets a little nippy with big dogs, if they do not let him make the first move. I learned fairly quickly that walking him alongside the larger dog before face to face greetings helps and he learns to love them. He has never allowed me to brush his teeth or trim his nails, so, I have the vet do that (they spoil him!) and he gets his teeth cleaned every 1-2 years. The last cleaning found an abscess during the x-ray. Fortunately, my vet removed the abscess (and, sadly, 5 teeth), but, saved my boys jaw! He has 11 teeth left and, I was told that he may not need another cleaning due to his age (and they feel they've gotten all of the "bad" teeth), but, I keep checking with the vet to be sure and plan to get them cleaned again in February. I realize this was a bit long, but, thought I'd share my rescue story. Hello to you and your Poms , from Dallas and his Mom!

Ah thank you so much for sharing your story! We realise we may have to bring on a trainer for Oscar to help with the aggression towards dogs and men! So lovely to hear your experience and that he’s had such a lovely life with you! Oscar is a bit bigger than yours! We love having two that are so similar but so different! 🤗💗

@@MrsKatieHeath I thought the same as you when I rescued Dallas. However, I opted not to bring on a stranger. Dallas grappled with abandonment issues during those first 6-8 months and I wanted him to be safe in the knowledge that I am his forever Mommy. I just remained patient, consistent, calm and, most importantly, in charge. He knows he's spoiled rotten, cute as a button and popular beyond imagination, but, he also knows "Mommy is Alpha!" It did take a lot longer on my own, but, I feel that it brought me and Dallas closer as a result. It took almost two years to get Dallas used to most dogs - except my aunt's dog - he loved her from day one. It took almost a year for him to like men, but he's in a much better place now. Since you've had Oscar such a short time I think there is plenty of room for him to completely surprise you! It may take a few more months than usual for him to really get comfortable. I wish I'd known that when I first rescued Dallas. The abandonment issues really broke my heart and (I believe) may have led to somer of Dallas's aggression. I also wish I was prepared for the abscess issue...apparently Toy Breeds are susceptible to tooth abscesses, so, be on the lookout for that! I love that I found your channel and am looking forward to seeing more of your cute fur babies.

@@krisc7135 yes! We’re very aware of the teeth thing as Pepi has already had to have her teeth cleaned at the vets 🙈 Ah that’s amazing you managed to do it on your own. Can you walk Dallas off the lead amongst other people now? Thankfully Oscar and Pepi LOVE each other so I guess we’re so lucky with that. We’ve managed to successfully introduce a few dogs with him, but I think I need to understand exactly why he’s behaving the way he is I guess! Thanks so much for watching! Lots of videos of the pups coming throughout December! 💗

@@MrsKatieHeath I didn't find out about the abscess prone issue until his fourth or fifth cleaning and everything had been uneventful, up to that point. So, I was a bit shocked. I love that you found out so early! There aren't many places that I can take him off lead (I live in the US), but, we have large front and back yards (the front yard is open and a dead end street) and he does very well without me leading. Our back yard is fenced in and borders a large field which is, unfortunately, populated with coyotes. So, I only set him free on the field during daylight and only when I feel secure. (we just got back from a dog friendly Distillery just down field and he was off lead the entire trip home. He even stopped to say hello to a jogger.) He stays close and listens when I tell him to stop. I'm lucky to have a very good boy who is very attached to me. I think the bonding during his training years was an immense help in that regard.

@@krisc7135 that’s amazing! Fingers crossed we can get Oscar to that point. He’s made so much progress already with us. Just waiting for that ‘AHA’ moment from him where everything clicks! X

Hi Katie, Oscar is so pretty & looks like he & Pepe are great pals.💞 I got a new Pom pup in Sept, dark chocolate, her name is Kissie (like Hershey Kissies). She is a handful, but I'll get her under control or die trying! Never knew such a tiny creature could be so stubborn! I refer to your videos quiet often with her training & hope & pray she will become as good as Pepe. What a little Angel she is. The Dyson products look like the things to have! Even if you don't have pets.

Thanks lovely! He is such a gorgeous boy! Oh Kissie sounds like a darling! They are such a handful and those first few months are testing to say the least! Have faith, you’ll get there! I remember having to do a work trip in the first week we got Pepi and My husband called me pulling his hair out because she wouldn’t go to sleep 😂😂 Oh, it’s such an easy way to keep the house clean. Cordless is the way to go! Feel free to send over any questions you have or if you’re struggling with anything 💗

Olive is such a lovely name! They pick up on words so quickly don’t they. Oscar has realised where the dog biscuits are today and goes and sits next to them, looks at us and back at them 😂 Happy early 9th Birthday Olive! 🎂 🎉💗

I had to tell you I watcb one of your vids about pomeranian.. I had one for over 15 years. The backward sneeze and what helps. If you splash a little water on their nose and they lick it for some reason it helps.

@@MrsKatieHeathHi Katie: They have all been fine together. I have Tommy (9); His mama, Pixie (11) and Albie (4). Tommy and his Daddy, BeBe, competed for dominance since neither was neutered. Tommy and Albie (who is fixed) get along great. Pix fusses at Albie if he gets in her space, and sometimes they fight a bit, but all in all everyone gets along really well.

Hello Katie, Thanks for your video. Just want to mention 2 white female Pomeranians that live in South Korea. The owner uploads new videos regularly about their lives.
