Just for anyone curious, the "voiceless bilabial fricative" in the joke at the end is the 'f' sound in Japanese which is not present in the English phonetic inventory (/ϕ/ vs /f/), and the best way I can explain it to those not versed in ling jargon is that it's the sound you get when you are blowing piece of lint off your phone screen. Also yes, that does mean that the joke at the end is basically translated as "your 'f' sounds are effed up."

I more or less get it in English, but not in French too. The thing is, I do most things, includung conlanging as a hobby, in English. Didn't have any studies for that though, so while I might get what you're talking about, I'd never be able to associate these words to their sound without wikipedia out.

@DerpASherpa117
@DerpASherpa117 2 жыл бұрын
@@dsch772 if you've never studied phonetics what she said sounds like gibberish. Essentially, it describes how the sound is made via whether it is voiced or not (i.e., if the glottis is partially closed it's voiced, if open it's voiceless; you can check this by putting your fingers to your throat and saying /p/ and /b/, where the latter will vibrate when you say it while the former won't, as /b/ is voiced), where in the mouth it occurs (in this case, "pre-palatal" means just after the alveolar ridge behind your frontal incisors and before the velum, the soft palate at the roof of your mouth) and the quality of the airstream (in this case, an "affricate" is a combination of a plosive, or an abrupt stoppage of the airstream like in /p/ or /d/ in conjunction with a fricative or continuous, slightly turbulent airflow like in /s/ and /z/).

I know this is a skit, but Dogens japanese is much better pronounciation and in general wise than Ms.Summer. I can tell when she speaks, that japanese is her second language, as it sounds quite bit forced and unnatural, but comprehension wise would have no problem. Dogens Japanese sounds native as if he grew up here. So its a bit weird in this set up, how they play almost opposite roles as Dogen clearly has more experience in the language.
