@6:10 - My dear Ben and Ashley.. I think this is the high time that you invite a couple of your patrons on board to travel with you.. They assist (not help) you with the sailing, taking care of your kid, learn the lines etc... I have seen this on lot of other SVs like Delos, La Vegabonde and Parlay Revival, etc... It actually helps you!!

I grew up on sport fishing boats out of SoCal. My Dad was the Captain Owner. I learned to walk basically on boats. What I remember is that I loved it especially getting caught in big storms lol 😂. Playing in bait tanks. I had no worries 😌. Our boats / trawlers basically were about 65 to 75 feet. We fished the Channel Islands down to San Diego depending on the season and fishery. In any case I’m sure your kids love it!

The part where she had the black whatever on while taking video at night at around 7:51 was a fascinating artistic video contrast to the white-on-more-white-and-sunshine-and-pale-everything that the day shots on sailboats tend to be. In a huge universe, the selfsame environment, it tended to draw you into what she was saying more, and felt more intimate. (not in any weird sense, but more one-on-one and on-the-spot.) It was one of the most artistically interesting uses of color and dark overall background/ambience I have seen in all the sailing world. This was demonstrated perfectly with the very next shot being the completely contrasting relatively wide-angle flat-lit day view of the pastel-toned-entire-world. Something Schwarzenegger did so perfectly in the 1974 Olympia, from zoom to pan in a short span, as described in the book Pumping Iron. On another note: what DO you think you would get on the next boat?

Given the significant structural issues with your particular model cat, how will you deal with that for the roughest passages and when you want to sell it for the next big purchase? Your frustration with all the nuisance fixes and more are becoming quite apparent. For those of us who have followed your adventures for quite some time and hope for a safe and fun completion of your world spanning voyage that worries a lot of us too I suspect.

Hello Ben, Ashley and the little people, what I liked most about today's video is that you're not giving up! Bad weather doesn't bother the kids much because in their world, they think it's all another normal day with Mom and Dad. That being said, little people become big people far too fast. A larger boat is a good idea and I hope you can do that soon. Thanks for this video and update and will look forward to the next one. Cheers from Nanaimo.

As a 35 year live aboard / sailor on a small (24 feet waterline) old wooden boat, I know what you are talking about. I have skippered a 48 feet racing rig catamaran, so I know what the difference is between my old small boat and a modern big (nowadays big is even bigger) yacht. The problem here in the Med is that most rental yachts are now 50 feet and driven (not sailed) by inexperienced folks. Last night my small boat was surrounded by three cats, anchoring about 20 from my boat (which has a 10 feet bowsprit) and I could not even see the shore anymore. Those big apartment building resembling floating ???? All have way too small anchors and just float over my boat in a gale. Plus, 10 or more people on board, those boats stink. In your case, big is the way to go. Much faster, easier to sail, comfortable and safer.

There is this couple that use a bolted down car seat to teach their now active child that sometimes mom or dad simply has to know he’s safe buckled down in his seat so they can do the necessary maneuvering or whatever it is that needs to be done without them having to worry that he’s suddenly not in his seat anymore, causing a possible small onset panic attack till they’ve located him again. I could imagine some people using a comfortable harness system with some stretch line and some easy to clip in safety clips with enough attachment point for kids to move outside in the “cockpit” during fast cruising moments. Maybe I’m talking absolute paranoid nonsense here but I was already thinking a higher guard rail and stronger tensioned netting when ordering a new boat, if that’s possible?
@leonply

A sixty foot catamaran would be a great upgrade for you, as you'll still be able to double hand it, and the kids would have a bit more room to grow into. Have you though about one of the newer 52 to 55 foot cats? They're still quick, stable and much more affordable. Regardless of what you do, you'll always have a fan in me. Cheers!

Take a look at the Chris White builds ! Atlantic 57 ! The S-glass material is superior to E-glass ! They are safe and fast ! There is a story about a funnel cloud that flipped a Chris White build . All hands were rescued but the boat was lost floating upside down for 7 months ! The boat was found on the east coast of the USA and was restored because the hull needed no reconstruction and the cabinets were not damaged including the windows which did not need replacing and do not leak ! The story is on the O'Kelly's yt channel. I truly believe the Chris White Atlantic 57 build will last several generations of sailors and will only increase in value. You might like the Atlantic 72 even better , I know I do !

Great video because it captures the reality of sailing - crappy forecasts, nasty seas, everything to windward. I justt don't know how you do it with the two little ones. The bigger boat thing is fine if you have the £€$¥.At the end of the day, that's all it boils down to - not just the purchase but the ongoing and higher running and maintenance costs, as you well know of course. My worry for you is the bulkhead issue. In particular, given the amount of twist and flex your hulls have, I'd be mega concerned about losing your rig. Please only sail in benign conditions. Seriously.

I have to ask. If you're bulkheads or other interior support structures have failed, why are you doing this passage? I perhaps missed a repair video or explanation? Seems like a dangerous passage without repairs. Again, apologies if I missed the explanation. I just saw a segment where there was massive movement of a bulkhead in this video which suggests that the structural integrity is less than designed.

I think that bulkhead damage clip was spliced in from several months after this video was recorded (perhaps present day). I’m not sure where Nahoa is in real-time, but I have to assume there’s absolutely no way they’d make an offshore passage with their bulkheads in that state.

Not gonna lie, the video stressed me out a bit. Our life on board is very very similar to yours (though we're way closer to civilization). The night passages on purpose because kids are sleeping, the discomfort to anything windward, the stress of keeping the boat functional, the uncertainty of weather, the happiness and health of the crew. It seemed for us the little glimmers of cruising that make it worth while were becoming less frequent as compared to the discomfort and stress. I guess my point is we sympathize and get it more than most. ALSO, yeah, that flex there in the main aft bridgedeck bulkhead, the one with the sliding door. We recently tabbed that in under the stairs because we were getting similar (maybe slightly less) flexing while sailing. It seems like every month or so we're finding another spot that needs to be reinforced. Little bit by little bit the boat is getting less squeaky. Question though, do you get more flex in your lee shroud than you'd like, and if so, do you think that's from the hull flexing so much?

Great going guys. Id like another, bigger Cat (previously a lagoon 410) for the space & comfort but to get one that will perform well and fit my family and gear is at least 3x our budget. Im searching now for a big old mono - likely a ketch for easier short handing. Priority is a safe, comfortable, spacious and not dead slow platform for adventures (diving, kiting etc). For long cruising and day to day reality - a cat's speed doesn't count so much. I am looking at sizes larger than my comfort zone though at 60+feet which is not well documented territory - I know couples doing more on bigger boats but think thats with highly modern systems dependencies.

Hello, Sailing Nahoa this is an open question to you and all your subscribers and watchers. I know I’m going to receive some negative comments to this question however it’s a legitimate query to all liveaboards (mainly aimed at Cats but also curious from the Mono owners out there). I also understand it’s a hypothetical (at this stage) however I truly believe it is fast approaching becoming a reality. if a renewable energy (solar, electric, hydrogen ? - i.e. non diesel) boat could get you as far as the current ‘sails’ what would your next boat be - and would you consider a “sail-less” boat. Now I know there are people out there that love to sail - I totally get it (this question is not for you) however watching most of the common channels I do wonder if the actual ‘sailing’ part is as enjoyable as depicted and if ‘sailing’ inhibits you from enjoying other things (ie being able to go somewhere that the wind won’t let you (at that point in time)). Think about having the ability to choose windless or calm weather windows, point straight, possibly quicker passages, no mast/sails/rigging (maintenance, possible failure, costs), the boat liveability (if it didn’t have to ‘sail well’), overall stresses on the boat, maintenance, etc. I’m probably 6 years off (I’ll be a ‘fit’ 64) and have my eyes on purchasing a Seawind 1260 or 1370 ($$$) and looking to initially circumnavigate Australia and then possibly onto South Pacific and then who knows so ‘range’ is definitely a huge consideration (this is not just a day-tripper coastal question - a true long term liveaboard). I’m looking forward to your (constructive) thoughts (either positive or negative).

There are many Electric sail boats out there. Sail boats an cats... I prefer to sail.. you need nothing but wind no gas no electricity... Just wind .. I have owned both .. I prefer wind. The only thing that limits where you go is size not sail or no sail... I have sailed off of a mooring more times than I can count.. you can motor sail.... Which is very cool...!! What I didn't like about not having sails. If I ran outta fuel I was stuck.. in a sailboat no gas you have wind... It's all down to you an what you wanna do. How you wanna live an where you wanna travel... Check out a vessel called a diesel duck... It's a Sailing trawler... Very nice... Almost bought one.. but went with sailboat...

If you ever sale in the Great Lakes especially Lake Erie the waves you were talking about are the same if not worse on the Erie. If you are out on the lake in 1-2 footers which is a smidge rough but no big deal for the 30 foot or so. But the wind can quickly turn the lake to 5 footer in a very short time. You think it felt rough on this sale in the video the lake is way worse. In fact it is extremely dangerous if you don't understand what it can do.

The damage looks serious and structural rather than cosmetic. I hope you are able to repair it quickly. The allure of a “fast” boat is compelling but misleading. Have a look at Schionning catamarans, they won't be in the shows unfortunately. For me they are a perfect mix, an 1800 GForce might be what your after and would eat those conditions you are in, in the video and have good space and comfort. There are a lot of false statements about performance boats, I have a smaller 1480 Schionning and would be happy to answer any questions 100% honestly.

Whenever you show the interior of your boat, I'm surprised the objects (fruit, toys, baskets, dishes) aren't flying around with the rough seas. Are they all secured on the bottom? Is it magic?

I think everyone but Delos is getting a new boat. lol Everyone's gonna be in airbnbs waiting for builds and only Delos will be sailing. lol Well, I guess that's not true. Parlay Revival and MJ Sailing finally just got back mobile. Still...lots of new boats coming and that's cool too!

Two weeks ago you showed a lot of damaged to your boat. They were disturbing pictures of damage that you have not addressed with an update. I suppose perhaps you give patreon members an update and the rest of can sit here and wonder about the safety of the children ? Sometimes, I feel like we are being played .

Knowing what the other boats have gone through with their bulkheads perhaps you have that on your mind when sailing this stretch. If the damage is anywhere near what I saw in other videos you will not be able to do the fixes by yourselves with 2 kids along.

Sailing is literally day by day (weather forecast by weather forecast, isn't it?)... but with many days come months and years (and babies)... and a new boat for new adventures around the world. Looking forward for all those days.

Expensive, I know, but "The Sailing Family" channel was circumnavigating with three kids on an Outremere. But that might be a good channel to check out and see what they experienced.

10:50 I feel so bad for the little boy. You are just adding more swells to the seas ones. The little looked helpless, also his head was constantly hitting that metal bar, everyone can see he wasn't enjoying that
