We all have to pretend to like people around us regardless of skin color. I found the comment about white people needing to love other white people regardless of how terrible white people really are, appalling . You are entitled to sell your home to whom ever you want and you don’t have to feel guilty because your parents left you an inheritance. As far as time is concerned , on time is on time and your own fluid interpretation does not dictate the reality of time. Hotels don’t have to get special shampoo for Black hair, neither do they have to get shampoo for oily hair or dyed hair or thin hair. The rest of the world is not responsible for internalizing the dynamics of your family or your community. It’s your responsibility to learn our common culture, and yes our common culture is heavily influenced by European Judeo-Christian Western values because the USA is and has always been a white majority. We don’t need to apologize for this reality. It’s dismissive and condescending to say white students in advanced classes are not really more intelligent or gifted. It may be that these classes should contain more Black and Brown students but this doesn’t mean we need to diminish the achievements of white students. If your kid’s friends were drinking, the probability of him drinking as well is rather high. Furthermore, police officers showing interest in your child is not a negative thing, unless that’s the spin you want to put on it. You didn’t say anything that substantiated the idea that the police were harassing your son. Oh and I’m not white.

"We say hello to each other. We acknowledge each other with a smile or head nod. It is a sign of respect. It doesn't really mean "hi" I mean it means hi but it means more than hi, it means I see you , you are human" This statement DOES translate over. This tells me she as probably only experienced "city life" mostly in her life. If you go to a smaller town one thing people with notice if they are from a larger town/city is how many people simply wave at you or give you a head nod that means exactly the same as she described. She talks about "culture" as being owned by different ethnic groups but "people" living in different areas have different "cultures". The biggest "well known" culture divide amongst people of the same race in the US is Northern and Southern "culture". A white person living in New York City lives in and has a complete different "culture" and abides by completely different "social rules" than a white person living in a smaller more rural town. So..... If Amy comes here and gives me a "head nod", not only would I understand what it "means" but she would get one back that means the exact same thing!

I never heard of any Black person who does not also do so, but now I know!) 😆The "time" point was also moot --- one cannot compare professional standards of "being on time" to not arriving on time for parties. 🙂Black Economic scholars assert (& I agree) that healing U.S. (& world) economic disparities between White vs. Black people will affect the most profound changes. Overall, however, Amy's message is potent and powerful, especially ideas related to dissolving economic disparities.

I think it is wrong to generalize all people of one race as alike, knowing or not knowing the same things. I am half Italian and half Irish, so I am categorized as white. Here's an interesting bit: I have had Black people tell me that Italians are not white. This is not true; I do not know where they got that idea. Anyway, I have three children and a grandchild. All are adults. My first born in 1972, had a Chinese father. She married a Black man and they had a son together. My second child born in 1980, has a Black father. She decided not to have children. She works with young children every day. My third child, a son born 1985, had a Puerto Rican father. He has blue eyes from a recessive gene. I knew nothing of recessive genes until he was born. A recessive gene can occur when a child has a grandparent on EACH side (cannot be two grandparents on one side) so my Irish mother had blue eyes; his dad's father was a blue eyed Puerto Rican. So a blue eyed grandparent on each side; my son inherited a recessive gene for blue eyes. A lot of folks do not know that Puerto Ricans can have blue eyes. Anyway, having Black people in my immediate family, I am pretty familiar with Black people. I also lived with my kids in a 99% Black neighborhood for 16 yrs. During that time the area became integrated with white people who had a bit more money to invest into the area (also known as gentrified) which was two sides of the coin, loss of families and low income people, along with improvements to infastructure, bigger tax base to pay for improvements (schools, play grounds, street lights, new businesses to create jobs, ect.) so I had Black friends, dated Black men (I was a single mother) and I've always liked Black people anyway and always had Black friends, before moving to that neighborhood. And no, none of my children are adopted; I gave birth to all of them at home with Midwives. I added that bit because I had people ask me if they were adopted! If my kids were white, they would have never asked. One more thing: My son has Black 10% Spanish not sure the percentage, Taino (the tribe in Puerto Rico before the Spanish invasion and colonization, which included the import of Black African slaves) Most of his genetics on his father's side is likely Taino. So my point is I'm not a "typical" white person (if there is such a thing) so please do not generalize.

I like her tone and speaking skills, but she is just wrong about most of what she is saying. For example, two(edit, six) points she makes. 1. She talks about shampoo bottles in hotels, having a wide discussion wouldn't change this, what changes this is the open market and whether a hotel thinks having an "ethnic" shampoo would generate more profits, if it does, then the hotels that have "ethnic" shampoos would eventually replaced all the ones that don't, if it doesn't generate more profits, then it won't change. And the thing is it doesn't, and so it hasn't change for a very, very long time. Also on this topic, black people don't "NEED" to use specific hair products, in fact they don't need to use any hair products at all, it is a choice. 2. She mentions that housing contracts discriminating based on race still exists, this is illegal and no longer exists. She also says that even if it isn't in the contract that white people still intentionally only sell to other white people, this is just a blatant show of her lack of knowledge of how the housing market works. When a house is sold, the seller in most cases doesn't even know the race of the buyer because it is mediated between two parties, the buying agent and selling agent, and two, sellers generally don't care what race the buyer is even if they somehow knew, they just want to take the highest offer so they can get the most money for the sale. edit: 3. the "wage gap" is actually an "income gap". There is no wage gap and women don't make less than men that have the same jobs, and the same goes for black women. Bringing this up also just shows a blatant lack of knowledge of interpreting the statistics and what they mean in a practical sense in the world. 4. She is wrong about "special" and "honors" classes. They are based on merit, usually some form of aptitude test. Race has nothing to do with it. Merit, being the exact thing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. says he dreamed of a world where people were judged not upon the color of their skin but their merit. 5. She is wrong about the education system. First, it's a joke and doesn't teach people how to be successful in a capitalist society, so it's in many ways a waste of time for most people no matter how good the education is(talking about public education system). Second, she is wrong about blacks being traumatized because they don't learn about "their" people being successful. Only racist kids would look at it that way, instead of learning that Americans were successful and so because they are also american, they can be successful. 6. White people is america have also always been poor. You could make the argument that, there have always been rich white people, but the same thing is true of blacks, throughout the entirety of american history, there has ALWAYS been rich black people, probably starting the the first slave providers, which were all black people, selling their black slaves the white Americans. 7. Her son questioning her and what she took from it is just wrong. A person's appearance, and therefor what they wear DOES matter. So telling her son, what he is wearing doesn't matter is just wrong. A black man, or any man for that matter, dressed in a way that looks professional will generally almost always be treated in a way you would expect any professionally dressed person to be treated by a stranger, regardless of race. 8. She is wrong about her reasoning why people "like" people that look like then, this has been scientifically proven to be rooted in biology and is not a cultural element or as she puts it, part of "colonization". This woman is out of time, she is stuck in the racism that she experience as a child in the 70's and thinks it still exists today, it doesn't. As nice as this woman's disposition is and she would probably at least seem to be a pleasant woman to talk to, she is patently racist. She says many thing that are racist statements in this video and I would be very surprised if she in fact believed nothing of what she says, unless she is lying and doesn't believe what she is saying, she is racist.

This line reminds me of a FATHER talking to his kids when he gets close to the end... He was nearing the end of his life. We were made in THEIR image after THEIR OWN likeness.... ALSO.... The SONS of GOD fell in LOVE with the daughters of man and took them for WIVES and had SEX with them and produced CHILDREN with them.... not only are they FLESH... but they are BIOLOGICALLY compatable with "us".... We were created in THEIR image afterall! God said BLOOD is life and commanded us not to consume the blood from animals we eat. Only BLOOD of innocence can cleanse our sins... For a GOD who is not FLESH, he sure does put a LOT of importance on BLOOD.... and the ULTIMATE sacrifice was the BLOOD of his SON... So... if GOD grew old and died... how is he the Alpha and Omega... ruling FOREVER? God is NOT the only of his kind... there are others like him... Does that make him one GOD among GODS? NO!!!!! he was GOD... and lets make this simpler to comprehend... Replace "GOD" with "KING"! What makes a KING a KING? What is the DIFFERENCE between a KING and the person plowing the fields? NOTHING... they are both the same.... but the ONE difference that makes a KING the KING is the BLOOD in his veins. And through the BLOOD the kings son becomes the king when the king dies. The BLOODLINE makes a king a king.... and such through the BLOOD GOD reigns forever. GOD or the "KING" even had a revolt by his own MILITARY... that tried to EJECT the KING from his THRONE and take it... And this one convinced 1/3 to rally behind him. We humans copied this system of rule from THEM... the KING is ordained by GOD... some pharoes even claimed to be GODS.... Definitely agree that any church must teach us to love one another, looks and color and hairstyle and clothing choices aside. That being said, there's no need to condescend. It is all of our responsibility to teach each other to love when we have the opportunity, skin color be darned. It's not as if white people can't love and are expecting black people to bring in their expertise. Far more white people love others including black people than black people realize. Sometimes we can get so ingrained in family stories that include terrible experiences of the past that we don't look up and accept the love that is already there. Are some white people guilty of hatred and selfishness? Of course. As are some black people. We are all sinners in some way or another. So singling out white people as a "them" that don't know how to love when it may be the perpetuation of racist stereotypes about white people that is the wall between you doesn't make sense. It makes me sad to hear black folks say they expect others not to like them. But it's not because people don't inherently like them. Expect to be liked, and it changes one's confidence. We can't live in fear. Sure, there may be someone who doesn't like us, and not for a good reason. That is our universal experience, color aside. But most people will!!
@reservist73 жыл бұрын
@@jlheathfam2 I appreciate your intervention and I have seen a lot of interesting points. I like the intro and I thank you for thinking like that. Yet again what saddened me especially among Caucasian Christians is everything that comes from when you mention condescending. Why does it always, i mean always why does it have to be a justification? Why can't you just acknowledge what she is saying, trying to see from her perspective (which apparently seems very hard ) and ask so how can we work things out how can we, where do we go from there to make things better for both parties. And this is something you rarely hear from the Caucasian side. Always trying to justify or challenge what the black are saying about their experiences I mean why not just listen and work together to improve things? She is not being condescending she says what she is going through. I mean were the caucasians victims of slavery? No. Are they been denying jobs because of their names? No. Are the young caucasians males being shot by the police at the same rate than the black? No. So if the black community want to tell you what they are going through I mean why do you have to keep questioning that? That is what makes reconciliation difficult . the ego and the lack of "let me just shush and listen because my brother seems hurt" kind of mentality. Its just a sad situation.

People are INDIVIDUALS. This woman is so off base on a lot of things. It's for this same reason that I don't get "more excited about Jesus". I'd honestly like to know why you believe that the books in the Bible are accurate accounts of actual events. Because the Bible says it's true? If you know your Bible then you know 1st Peter 3:15..." Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have" So what's your reason as an intelligent, reasonable and logical adult who has had the benefit of at least 12 years of primary education? Faith? What good is faith? Faith is belief in the absence of evidence. If someone asked you to prove something and you had irrefutable evidence, you'd merely present the evidence and be done with it, you wouldn't need faith at all. Lumping us all together as if we are all from the same backgrounds, is racist..Like in Africa there are different regions and cultures as well not all black Africans abide by the same code as one another ,in fact, different groups have very different cultures to one another ,why should it be any different among whites?Also when I named my kids I picked names that I thought would be good for their future as well , that is not something only blacks do or think about when naming their kids..I also don’t think that hotels want to be in the beauty supply business they don’t supply hair oil just like they don’t supply mousse, hairspray or shampoo for dry hair or oily hair there are no anti-frizz or detanglers available either it is not prejudiced they are just simply supplying a basic product for those who forgot their hair products at home, nothing racist about it. I wonder if people who work and are waiting on someone to relieve them of their shift who have children at daycare that need to be picked up at a certain time or else they get charged for every 15 min they are late like the idea that time is “ Fluid”. Or maybe your hosting a dinner party and would like to serve dinner hot and have everyone sit down to eat together like the idea of “ Fluid Time”. What about when you have an appointment before work and need to be out at a certain time if “ Time is Fluid”? To inconsiderate people time may be fluid but for the rest of us time is an essential element that helps us all plan our work day and social life with consideration of others “ time”.

Where there is fear, hatred is never far behind and vice versa. You sound as if you're only committed to misunderstanding her, by being needlessly defensive of yourself. Don't troll. Most white Americans don't care about their European ancestry at all and you know it. When their ancestors chose to come here in droves, those ethinicities were traded for the all encompassing "white" identity for fear of being treated the worse, not getting a leg up on the competition; to name a few things. But most of all that particular kind of American procured "white culture", was and is mostly defined by its hatred of non-whiteness. Hatred is not conducive for creativity and artistry, as you can observe is bountiful in black American culture in general, it can almost be described as an inheritance, for the nightmare it has been for too many people of color. And so there is no defining "white culture" which isn't mostly borrowed, or stolen, because of these social negatives. Like a school of fish hoping the next guy get's eaten instead of you.

@omogaju3 жыл бұрын
When you go to church I really don't think you hear the gospel all the time. The gospel is simply the good news that i.e. to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another. You also hear about how to grow in your love for God, learning about prayer etc. Other messages that are not the Gosepl. Look at the book of Corinthians and how paul just focused on issues in the corinthian church. Still nothing to do with the gosepl. Also, the church (building) space can be multi-purpose. I won't to believe this talk is not taking the slot of a regular Sunday or mid-week Bible study. Lastly, I think we should be careful about itching ears to want to hear what we want as Paul said in 2 Tim 4:3. We might fast decend to the point where we are only taught feel good messages. I wish you well Teresa! I pray that Christ be formed in us and we continue to grow to be who God wants us to be.

I tried to listen to this, but right off of the bat I was turned off- everything that this woman says is actually (WITHOUT HER EVEN KNOWING IT) divisive and stereotypical... When she THINKS that she is speaking against such things. I do not agree with there being white or black names, a name is a name... and phrases such as "do you know my people"? When I say "my people", I am referring to HUMANS. I consider all people as individuals and judge only based on my personal compatibility or chemistry with that person, their skin tone is inconsequential. I hate when anyone of ANY color says things like MY PEOPLE. If you say "your people" are only people of a specific color, you are automatically separating yourself from other people. ALL people are my people. Even if I don't like you, you have a right to exist and I will defend you even by laying down my life to protect you. But, if I don't like you, you can take it to the bank that it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the tone of your fucking skin, as that is absolutely infantile. There should be NO RACIAL LINES, because in reality there are no racial lines, we are ALL of the human race. We have been pre-programmed to draw these imaginary lines. All of the problems that she discusses here, are BECAUSE OF THESE IMAGINARY LINES!!!! Until everyone learns to stop thinking in these terms, these racial divides will exist. The only way to stop that is to stop separating ourselves. I do not look at any man or any woman as a white or black person, JUST a PERSON. I grew up in a diverse area, and was never taught to separate. I thank God that I don't have to be burdened with such nonsense. The thought of a persons color never enters my mind until people like her PUT IT THERE. Stop separating ourselves and all of this nonsensical racism goes away.

@@GoodnWise I did, and again, for as long as people think in terms of my people and your people, white, black, brown, yellow or whatever, this will never stop... and she is the poster child for that mindset. I never did a wrong thing to anyone in my life based on the color of their skin, and if I saw someone being discriminated against, or even thought that that might be happening, I was the first to stand up and do something about it. If she believes that politicians are going to fix race relations, she is sadly mistaken... they fuel the hate, even if unintentionally... when you go around telling an entire group of people that they need to apologize for something, all that is going to do is piss off the ones responsible for the hate in the first place causing them to retaliate further, and alienate others, to appease one group of people... when we shouldn't be thinking in terms of "groups" in the first place. If everyone stopped drawing these imaginary lines and grouping ourselves, the old generation of haters will die off and the new mindset becomes the norm. One race... the HUMAN race.

So if black people have been here for 400 years are you saying they are mostly poor and imprisoned because for some reason they each individually keep making bad choices while most white people individually make all the right choices? And she's wasting her time trying to raise awareness because everything is fine? And her words telling you what her problems are of which it is impossible for you to be aware of because you don't ever have to live them is the problem? You need to read some books.

My family is from Appalachia. My uncle Ray is really named Dayton. My aunt Joy is really named Irma. My uncle Paul is really named James. My uncle Way man might have been named Howard. I'm not sure. My aunt Rita was named Reetha. My aunt Pauline was really named Janey. I could go on and on. It drives my daughter crazy and it's so much fun to tell her now and then her relatives legal names because she is always upset and a bit stunned. I never gave it much thought but I thought it was a hillbilly thing. There is a lot of crossover but instead of it making us closer, as it should have, it often made for more hatred. It took me a long time to figure out why. This was a wonderful talk. It's a shame the people who most need to learn what she has to teach won't be willing to listen.

As a white woman from the South, I was curious about what Amy had to say. She is correct in what she said. We really can’t identify with what a black child has to know to survive about our society in general in the US. That conversation was never taught to us or was even thought of growing up as a white child. I notice that it’s slowly changing in our community but racism is still strong especially with the older generations who grew up being taught (even subtly or unaware) to be racist. It really opened my eyes that we need to change in order to survive and thrive and truly love one another. We need to look into each other’s eyes more often and see the person inside their skin. I really liked that example.

White people are not colorless, we are also people of color. That saying “people of color” is ignorant. I’m 10% black but to look at me you’d think I’m Caucasian, not colorless!

I was raised in the south by a mother from eastern Europe. While racism was all around us, mom taught us to see how ignorant it was, and we grew up with clear knowledge & experience regarding racism, but without becoming racist ourselves. Quite the contrary: Mom's teaching innoculated us against racism, and I can easily recognize racism when I see it - and I have even fought against it. Racism is not limited to whites, but is a problem with all humanity. We should try to treat one another as truly human, fellow human beings, then racism goes away.

"We have to act like we like white people." Wow. So much wrong with that: First off, why don't you? Why wouldn't you? Second, what if a white person said, "I have to pretend like I like black people,"? Third, you don't have to act like you like anybody. Don't like them? Don't pretend. I think this woman confuses being polite and civil with "pretending to like people," Look, if you're so seething with anger that you have a hard time being polite and civil, that's your problem, nobody else's. It certainly isn't the fault of "white people". Why would ANY church have this racist person as a speaker?
