among many other things, the way it rearranges some of the typical Metroid item progression. Giving Samus a slide move but withholding the Morphball for quite some time rather than it being like the first thing you get. A lot more underwater exploration before you get the Gravity Suit, while Spin Booster and Space Jump are allowed to function without it. In a way very much like how you used the Screw Attack in the Prime games to cross wide gaps. In fact while it doesn't really acknowledge the Prime games as usual, there are some nice mechanical references. Storm Missiles being the most obvious, but also being able use the Grapple Beam to pull away stuff from some enemies.

Two other things: 1: If you have extremely good memory and attention to detail, Raven Beak's first battle with Samus were he beats her actually shows you exactly how to beat the first phase of his final boss fight, even the exact moment when to parry him. 2: Raven Beak's X-Parasite infected Spear Soldiers actually serve a darker purpose. If we go off the game's ending and you pay close attention, you'd notice that every time Samus defeats one of the Spear Soldiers they drop a red X-Parasite and Samus has no choice but to absorb it. We know that Samus' Metroid DNA reacts to seeing or fighting Raven Beak's species of Chozo, so in a calculated move Raven Beak actually engineered a situation where Samus would constantly absorb the DNA of his Chozo soldiers which would continually agitate her Metroid DNA to kick start her metamorphosis.

There is a very cool lore detail regarding the brains. It is never explained why they contain the "strange" energy to perform the omega canon, or why samus can simply absorb it. For that you have to recall the battle with mother brain in super metroid, where the baby metroid was able to absorb the hyper beam from mother brain and transfer it to samus when it heals her. Samus now having awaken metroid abilities can do it herself from the mother brain-like computers.

Counter argument: The hyper beam is actually specific to the metroids, not the brains. The baby transfers it's own special ability, the hyper beam, to Samus in Super. In Dread, Samus is endowed with the hyper beam after fully transforming into a metroid.
@diegog18533 жыл бұрын
@@_ch1pset To be honest I think it could be either way, I don't try to claim the hyper beam is exclusive to the brains. It must likely is simply a manifestation of samus getting an incredible amount of energy into her suit. Ultimately It is open to interpretation, but I do think it is implied in super metroid that the energy absorbed by the baby from mother brain was transfered to Samus and that is why she aquired the hyper beam. And that is what is happening with the brains, with the only difference that the energy is not big enough, so its just the omega beam, and the energy can be acquired by samus by herself with her awaken metroid powers. So I still think it is a reference to super metroid. I don't think it changes much.
@_ch1pset3 жыл бұрын
@@diegog1853 I also might point out the color of the beam is very telling. The hyper beam is characterized by the rainbow colors, and the ability to destroy most blocks. In Dread, it's not really rainbow per se, but it's close enough and also destroys most blocks. It's explicitly clear in Dread that it was the metroid transformation that gave samus the hyper beam power, so we can infer that in Super, the baby was transferring a part of itself to Samus, not Mother Brain. All that said, I think the ability for Samus to absorb the omega cannon power from the central units is easily explained by them being powered by aeon, or the simple fact that it is chozo tech, which Samus has always been able to absorb to gain powers from canonically.
@envirronvideoproductions84553 жыл бұрын
My favorite thing about Dread was definitely the way they convey Samus being a stoic badass throughout the game using JUST body language. When she meets Kraid again, she's brimming with confidence because she's fought him before and knows everything about him. Beating Corpious is satisfying because it conveys "this is just Tuesday to me" vibes. Just god, man, all the cut scenes in this game are perfection. I read this one article complaining about how "Samus should smile more" when she sees Quiet Robe for the first time because it's the first time she's seen a live Chozo since childhood. Granted, yes, that is a revolution. But she conveys it through body language that's she's relaxed around him and just speaking in his language, something she never forgot from childhood, is respect. That, to me, speaks volumes over a fking smile.

Two of my favorite details are both concerning Raven Beak. The first is that every boss' intro cutscene subtly shows you how to damage them, but Raven Beak doesn't have anything like that. Instead, the game's intro cutscene shows you one of the methods to damage his first phase. During their first encounter, Samus ducks under Raven Beak's shockwave attack and, using a counter, shuts his lightning armor offline temporarily. This allows Samus to damage his armor with a missile. The other is that Raven Beak uses the Lightning Armor and Beam Burst Aeion abilities from Samus Returns in his first and second phases respectively. The best thing about the Control Unit/Mother Brain connection is that lore-wise it makes complete sense. Mother Brain was created originally by the Chozo as a means of better controlling the Metroids, and in this game we can reasonably assume that the control units were created by Quiet Robe (or the Thoha in general) to control the EMMI... So it makes complete sense that they would share similar designs as they were created by the same population with similar purposes.
@see.eye.23613 жыл бұрын
If that is the case then why did Raven Beak destroy the first Central Unit? I think it is more likely that the Central Units were built by humans to replicate Mother Brain. @@see.eye.2361 Other than the research and 'taking control' bit, my only other possible guess for Raven Beak destroying an E.M.M.I. (that they already had control of in this guesses case) and the Central Unit would be to test Samus. He did want the Metroid DNA, yes, but he also wanted to see what it could do and if he could get more out of it. So chances are it is to give her more of a fighting chance, to gather her footing and get the 'training' going. If she fails the E.M.M.I.'s win gets him what he wants. If it succeeds then he might just be getting a stronger warrior at the end Just a possibility I doubt it'd be out of care or affection. Raven Beak did spare Samus at the Start but we don't necessarily get a 110% confirmation as to why that was. Was it because he saw a potential for more and got greedy? Didn't have the tools necessary on his person and had to do the next best thing? Or maybe he had to back off to not receive the end of Dread treatment right then and there. Could even have been the teeniest tiniest bit of care because he did donate his DNA for her and all that - although it's still much more likely that he saw her fully as an investment rather than anything more, and 'caring traits typical to likes of humans' or something just don't exist within him There never really was a chance for him to say it outright. But either he just knows of the concept of it (as "ADAM" he constantly tells Samus to 'be careful' etc.) and uses it to seem more natural/tries to imitate a relationship he knows not enough of, to seem like 'he's there for her' - or it's some genuine care of wishing her luck (which again, I doubt but can't lock out completely) It's a bit of a shame that the final fight ended up on getting the X involved, I'd have loved to hear humbled Raven Beak speak. Either try gathering himself for one last intimidation attempt, or try talk it out, as a cunning backstabbing plan or because he'd realize his defeat There's still plenty of questions, I hope we hear of Raven Beak in the future still even if he's preeeetty much dead

The best part about the Kraid fight is that it *isn't* exactly the same though. If you sequence break and get the morph bombs early, there's an alternate way to beat kraid in a single phase. It's really great what the devs put into this game knowing there would be sequence breakers.
@zeltroid3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really dig that. One of the quickest ways to beat Kraid in the NES version was to get in close and spam tf out of bombs. lol. So some people still think thats a connection. Whether or not the devs intended that, idk, but still a pretty cool detail.

Seriously?! No! ZDR-Network-Hosted ADAM was Raven Beak's attempt to empower Samus by giving her hints on where to go next & how to proceed so her DNA would be of even better use to him. He then pointed her towards monsters he had hoped could dispatch her for him. Then, he chickened out & tried to discourage her from even seeking him out anymore. Then, as a last ditch effort to avoid confrontation, he had "ADAM" straight tell Samus SHE was the threat to the galaxy & should therefore simply giveup. Samus knew the entire time because of ADAM referring to her as "Samus" instead of "Lady" & chose that last conversation to end the facade figuring she must've been waaaay to close for Raven Beak's comfort.

He wasn't chickening out, he's too narcissistic and self-assured of that. He was waiting until she had developed her Metroid powers to the fullest so that he could make a clone army of her at her peak (as mentioned in the cutscene after his battle) - the "last-ditch effort to avoid confrontation" is him simply trying to make that easier by having Samus go along with his plan willingly. We see that in the final battle, were it not for Samus's powers flaring up beyond his expectations, he would hack kicked her ass in a fight, since the only thing that stops him from outright winning is Samus's powers suddenly activating to such a degree that she transforms.

I think it was meant as a boss fight at the start, and that they show it off like the X Ridley in fusion (Hence why the Cryo Chamber), yet ended up scrapping that boss. Probably because they had no idea how to bring him into the story well. DLC for this game is hard imaginable, only if they do stuff like the Zero Suit Samus extra like in I think Super Metriod (Can be wrong, never played any of the older games), tho instead of playing Samus, we get to play Raven Beak. That we can see how his whole backstory played out by playing, we see a cutscene of how he entrapped Kraidd and then, maybe, a Draygon boss where he is slain and the put into the cryo chamber for experiments. Prime is a different setting I think. It's why Meta-Ridley exists in that game. Ridley could only be alive if Mother Brain survived somehow, and he comes back in Prime as Meta-Ridley only because the other space pirates found his corpse and revived it with the power of their metroid experimentations. I think the game even references this fact, since it was the first Metroid game to provide lore stations, which I thought was really cool, gives you an in-depth look at the Space Pirate society.
@darkmastern23223 жыл бұрын
Prime is the same setting, it's earlier in the series and with Ridley appearing in Metroid II on 3DS as Meta-Ridley it shows that after he was defeated he was most likely cloned (Or Reborn the way he is in Other M) and that's why he's no longer a cyborg. However this does most likely imply that since he didn't show up this time, Ridley is either dead for real after the events of Fusion, or possibly just didn't show up because there were no space pirates here. Same for Kraid. But if the knitting is that the space pirates are rather just Raven Beak's underlings, it would mean with Raven Beak dead, that there is no more high command for the Pirates if any exist since the prime games seems to be hunting down the space pirates along with destroying the phazon... waiting for Prime 4 to see what happens next.

the reason why samus reverted back to "normal" samus after absorbing X-Quiet Robe was because she gain the full capability to control metroids from Quiet Robes DNA thus being able to switch back to more human Samus
@lukelafontaine693 жыл бұрын
Hence she could essentially revert back and forth if that is the case. If she can control the form, she could potentially use it later on. Would be a great build for a game. Having her use it only to realize it slowly consumes her dna and alters it to metroids. Sure, Quiet Robe's dna can control metroids, BUT the X-parasite is prey to the metroid so eventually, that control will probably fail at some point, and she may become a metroid again but not at her own will. Interesting. As if to say he was waiting for you the whole time. Sending the EMMIs to check if the video was real and if so they'd collect the X. Samus would just destroy them. It seems more like they sent Samus to collect their assets or at least figure out what happened. She was the last option. The EMMI were made of the toughest stuff possible supposedly, as she's the only thing biological that was ok to call at that point cause the X is involved. Plus she evidently doesn't fail. If Raven Beak hadn't taken control of the EMMI they might not have called Samus to begin with. I'm assuming he sent out the video to lure Samus in but when the EMMI showed up he saw that he could use them to his advantage because they can extract DNA. I’m glad that you brought up potential DLC, because there are several loose ends and plot points that the ending doesn’t explain. For instance, I highly doubt that Raven Beak was the only Mawkin left after the initial X infestation, there’s likely still a population of Mawkin somewhere on ZDR or in orbit, maybe in that empty top right corner of the global map? In the last Chozo Archive image you can see a cloaked Chozo figure in the background holding a strange forked weapon that we never see in game. Hanubia the the name of the area on the surface of ZDR, where Samus’ gunship is landed, I’m sure most of you who have reached this area have noticed the docked Chozo ships hovering over the buildings, what you probably haven’t noticed are that those same ships are nowhere to be found during the final escape sequence. Speaking of which, it was never really explained why the planet exploded, perhaps it was detonated by some third party, a person or group of people that used the Ships on Hanubia to escape? Idk dude just spitballing here.

AND ANOTHER THING! what’s the deal the the X parasite that infects Raven Beak at the end of the game? We’ve never seen a purple X form before, all we’ve seen are yellow, green, and red X forms. Whats with that?

@@see.eye.2361 Bro you're right, I never thought of that. We've never seen a purple x, mutating with kraid probably doesn't explain it since an x absorbed ridley before and nothing changed in its color. Damnn, I never thought of that hahahaa

@@see.eye.2361 I also found it kinda interesting that Samus makes a point NOT to absorb that X, but rather to blast it dead. Granted, in part it just serves as a display of the fact that this beam actually can destroy X (which i'm pretty sure hasn't been possible prior), as well as an excuse to pan the camera upward to show the exit from that area (this game really does a great job about using visuals to instruct), but to me it also came off as a conscious decision by Samus to not take any influence from Raven Beak or allow any aspect of him to survive.
@see.eye.23613 жыл бұрын
@@shannonjones8877 I don’t see why the x wouldn’t be immune to conventional weapons. I always thought it was because they move around so quick that it would be incredibly hard to hit them. I can’t see a way that Raven Beak could have stood a chance against them otherwise. We see an X form plunge into a pit lava and die after killing the experiment. I also don’t think they can go through walls, what we see in dread and fusion is just a consequence of the game being 2D.
@shannonjones88773 жыл бұрын
@@see.eye.2361 That X doesn't die though. It falls into the lava, finds Kraid's corpse, then infects Raven Beak. That's why Raven Beak X looks like a cross between the Experiment, Kraid, and Raven Beak. And yeah i'm mostly basing that on the fact that the outer shells of the X can be shot and destroyed, but the only way to truly get rid of the X for good before that had been to absorb them. And the X probably weren't subdued by Raven Beak through combat, he just managed to act quickly enough to lock them all down in Elun before they spread.

I'm sure there are even more of these hidden callbacks we haven't noticed yet. Great vid.

I actually noticed Adam not calling Samus “Lady” early in my first playthrough, thought it was odd, shrugged it off, and forgot about it. Genuinely surprised that it was Raven Beak almost the whole time

I really deep to heart hope we get to see more of the Metroid suit.

I have good news for you. She's PART SR388 Metroid, meaning she still has like 8 Metroid suits she can unlock. At the end, we'll LIKELY get to see Samus be PART Metroid Queen.

The ending was great, yes, but I think the most efficacious part of the game for me was when you go to Elum and release the X Parasites onto the planet. Anyone who's played Fusion to death and loves the lore of that game, knows full well what this means, and seeing it come to life among all the areas you've already been through was just fantastic. And the REALLY cool thing, was the fact that the X's didn't show up in a new area until Samus "broke the seal" and brought them in with her. Another huge throw-back to Fusion.

We have the same trope with the glass tunnel in Prime, if I remember correctly. This is how we get the Ice Spreader, by using a power bomb on a "glass" tunnel (the shore tunnel in the magmoor cavern). I didn't remember this segment in Super Metroid, but I still managed to think automatically of using the power bomb in these tunnels in Dread, thanks to Metroid Prime.

I remembered that event from super metroid, but forgot about it from Metroid prime.

That attack raven beak does in the final fight where he shoots a pink wave attack was shown in the opening cutscene where Samus fights him. He does it in the intro and Samus ducks underneath. During the final fight you can avoid this attack by simply ducking. I have seen many first time players struggle with this attack and the game activity showed you how to avoid this in the intro.

If you go back into the kraid room after releasing the x, the belly spike he shot as he died is gone. This was more than likely absorbed by the purple x that infected raven beak. Which would explain why raven beak x looked a lot like kraid.

I just loved that fusion had such a major impact. Not just from a lore perspective but game play as well. Fusion was my first Metroid game, and is the reason I love horror so much as an adult. Dread and Fusion are my favorite Metroid games because they do the element of fear so insanely well. Dread permeates the entire experience and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Along with Kraid: The hidden bomb insta kill is also an homage to the NES Metroid where using the bombs to fight him was far easier than trying to use missiles and beam shots.

I still think they'll save it for the next game, where she'll be able to fully control it so it doesn't drain energy of everything around her.
