This is a great video that anyone starting their first tank (and probably second with hindsight) should watch and take note of. I can personally vouch for setting up plugs, cables etc having had to very very carefully ease a 200L cabinet aquarium away from the wall while my wife fed a skimmer cable down the back. No fish in the tank but still sketchy as heck!

One more thing to add... Make sure your floor will take the weight. A friend of mine who lived on the Malvern Hills set up a beautiful six foot aquarium... His house was on three floors, basically going down the side of the mountain, so only the ground floor had a solid concrete base. He set the tank up on the floor above. A little while later, he could see that 'solid' timber beams of the ceiling below where the tank was sitting were visibly sagging! Needless to say, he had to strip the entire tank down- then move it to the ground floor, which provided suitably firm foundations for such a monstrous aquarium (6×2×2 feet).

Very important! I live in an old apartment, on the second floor, and it’s in the lease that if you have an aquarium, it can’t be any bigger than 20 gallons. I sure wish I could have a 40 gallon breeder tank though because I would love to have 2 Black Moor Goldfish. But I do love my 20 gallon. 😊

Boiling driftwood CAN get rid of tannins, it just depends on how much tannins the wood has inside and how long you boil for. I don't mind tannins so I usually boil it long enough so that the tank won't become blackwater and to disinfect the wood from any parasites/pathogens hidden inside.

Some great thoughts there Matt, I scaped my tank with aqua soil capped it with sand, it looked great. A few months later after seeing you and MD put loads of Corydoras in a tank, I thought hmmm I want some of them, then it suddenly dawned on me.... oh they are going to dig the soil up. Here is the order in which I do things: first, I place the fish down. Then I put down the substrate on top of the fish. Next I put the Rocks and hardscape on. Then, if I happen to have a birthday cake around, I put a slice of cake on the top. Then I pour the amount of water the tank holds. All that done, I put the plants wherever I can find a space for them, including in the birthday cake. Last, but not least, lay the tank on top of the whole mess. I don't ever see the fish, but I know they're happy, because if they weren't, they'd dig out, right?

I work in a pet store, and the absolute majority of problems "my" costumers have is from buying the wrong fish. They buy fish that will eat each other or needs really different type of water/temperature/whatever or they buy too big/many fish for a small aquarium. I have many, many times told people that no, I won't sell this fish to them because of that, but I know that many pet stores sells anything to anyone who pays enough money and then the costumers go out online to search for help when things go bad. I wish that people start thinking about what type of aquarium they can have and then(!) try to see what kind of fish is suitable, instead of staring with one fish and try to get it into some kind of water...

I can feel your frustration all we can do is educate, we have the same problem. The more I do we can give them the less likely they are to make these mistakes.

you would be surprised how much a 'flimsy' set of legs can hold. also people have to understand especially with Ikea at the moment most of their tablesurfaces aren"t real wood but hive cardboard. but if you just add some woodenplanks it tends to hold a lot of mass

hahaha, my first fish tank while I lived in England was on top of a tv stand above a t.v. thinking back probably not the best place to put a tank. hey i was 10, we didn't have the internet to get people calling me out on putting 15 gallons of water above a t.v. and my parents didn't think much of it either

Hi Matt. Great vid. Just scaped an aqua Marin 900 and was a little off level in one corner. Managed to get pretty close to bang on with some underlay under the corner of the cabinet but theres now a small gap between the cabinet and the floor in the middle. Do you think this will be ok? Thanks

How about CO2...more videos on how to setup CO2 in the tank would be great...to many videos on function of CO2 in the aquarium, and not a lot on setup explaining how to actually do it. 😊 Good video!

When you talk about rinsing the gravel/sand/rocks etc before placing them in, are you okay to rinse them in un-treated water? Or does that need to be treated as well?

They're mesh bags, some people use them for vegetables or washing clothes. If you search Amazon for filter media bags they will come up. Just check the sizing.
