Stick on glass pellets are great for getting your mad frantic fish away from the more timid ones that dont like the commotion so you can then give another food to them. Useful if they have different diets. edit: typo

I also tell customers who have 10 gazillion litres per hour filters, watch how the food travels around. If it's getting sucked in to the filter, turn them off for a few minutes while feeding. Food rotting in filters is often responsible for problems.

Fish will find a snack if they want it. I have a female guppy who will literally grab small bladder snails and slurp them right out of the shell! And the secret to not overfeeding and keeping clear water for me is keeping a very light bio load keeping lots of detrivores, snails and shrimp will keep your plants algae free and pick up any stray food and fish poop.

Variety is the spice of life. I feed about 4 different types of food to our fish. Large flakes, pellets large & small & tiny, dehydrated brine shrimp & tubifex worms, algae wafers for the bottom. We feed a nice pinch in the morning & again a few hours before lights off. Filters stay clean & no algae or yuck.

I find MDs tap tap works really well for feeding. You dont need to bash the tank hard- a couple of soft taps is all thats needed. and my fish come out of all their hiding places coz they know its time for food! They learn it super quick from the others- within days my baby guppies have learnt it from the adults and peek out. Then as you said- you can evaluate your fish health. I don't feed every single day though. I use a micro granule for tropical fish from a local aquarium shop and grind it smaller between my fingers for my smaller fish like bub guppies, endlers and nano raspora. then every other feeding give them some tropical flake instead (I break it up a bit). They do really well on the granule. The bristlenoses usually get an algae wafer- the shrimp love these as well. I mix that up with shrimp pellets and sinking catfish pellets (for cories etc) for some variety for the bottom dwellers, plus the shrimp happily hunt down any fish food in there. The guppies also chase and eat the sinking pellets. Seems to give them a good variety and they seem happy and healthy with nice colours and no issues that ive seen. Once every week/ 2 weeks I give them some frozen food, daphnia atm, for something different. note- I tip my food into the lid or my hand then pour it in the tank- just in case it all comes out at once! If I go away for more than a couple days, I measure out what is needed into little containers, write the day and tank on them (they are placed in front of the appropriate tank), then my visiting friend knows all she has to do is tip that containers worth in- no guessing what they need etc. As a side note we get a lot of evaporation from the open tanks so I also plastic wrap the open tanks with a few air holes so she doesnt have to worry about additional maintenance, with a bucket of water ready at room temp just in case she needs to top up (hasnt been needed yet).

You have it all sorted and organised, great work! Fish can learn a lot more than we give them credit for, I used to have a puffer that would come out of hiding at the sight of a golden bell. I don't think it was the noise just the sight of something that always meant food was coming.

The only thing I would add is to feed to how energetic feeders your fish are. I have a 90 gallon mixed community tank. If I fed lightly my angels, sae's and red eyed tetras would get the lot, leaving nothing for my lemon and cardinal tetras, bristlenose, otto or corys. I feed on the heavy side, once a day, with the lot going in at once. That way it filters all the way down the water column, and everyone gets something. 5 days a week, flake or pellets, 2 days frozen, rest on the 8th day. 4 evenings a week algea wafers after dark. Once a week, some raw courgette for the bristlenose.

I feed my fish a mix of hikari pallets for tetras and for discus, sera insect granules and tetra tropical fish mixed food. Some of it floats some of it sinks, some of it is small some it is big. It varies all the time how much they get of what. The discus pallets sink fast and my bumblebee catfish and corydoras love it. And once in a while frozen food like bloodworms and beefheart. Also i dont feed regularly. One time a few days in a row and than i skip one or two days This makes them go around scavaging in the tank.

great advice Matt - love watching your vids I've been keeping fish on and off for a good few years, got into the hobby years ago because of my Dad and he would turn in his grave at the expense of keeping fish these days but I came on to say that in addition to dried flake etc. frozen food has its place. I have a cute little pea puffer that will not accept anything but frozen blood worm. Something I feed is cut up earthworms and the fish go mad for them, i make sure i don't give more than they can eat in one sitting to avoid any left overs fouling the water.

Nice video, I like your spin on these subjects. It can def be more in depth than a lot of other topics. It’s def my favorite of the fish keeping hobby. It is worth noting that prepared foods are def not higher quality than say Live or Frozen though. It’s no different for humans or dogs either. The more Whole Foods we eat the healthier we are, the less processed food we eat, the healthier we are. So while pellets and flakes are more convenient, there is no way they’re healthier than a variety of frozen foods.
@FishShopMatt
@FishShopMatt Жыл бұрын
Thank you. The issue with frozen foods is they can be of quite low quality and have more water than anything else. But if you can get a good quality one it can be as good.

@@FishShopMatt a banana is healthier than a dried banana. A juicy steak is healthier than a dried steak, and if a fish stumbles across another dead fish in the wild and eats off it, it’s not going to be malnourished just because it had water content to it 😜 The food companies want you to think it’s higher quality so they make more money. I buy a lot of my frozen food from the grocery store and Asian market :) Also, a lot of times a food is better not for what it contains, but what it doesn’t contain. And healthy, organic foods don’t contain the bad stuff that the body has to filter out.. such as preservatives, flour, random binders, sugars, color dyes, and other chemicals that most humans eat without even knowing what said ingredient is on the package. The less stuff the fish has to digest that isn’t actual food/nutrition, also the better. I bet if you ever had health issues, your doctor will suggest more Whole Foods, and stay away from highly processed ones. 😎

Thanks for detailing the various aspects of feeding. The only variant path I have had to chose is with my large cichlid tank. I have red devils which only take pellets and no frozen food which is fine, but I have an Oscar and to a lesser extent a jag that wont touch pellets, only cichlid flake food. For sometime when he was small, he was hardly growing which is unusual for an Oscar but then I started to notice how selective he was with food. Once I started feeding frozen food (like raw fillets, prawns, mussels) he started growing much quicker.) To be honest i would prefer to feed frozen food less (like what you suggested in the video) but I guess you have to cater for distinct situations sometimes.

Very useful, thanks! I gave my neons and harlequin rasboras some bloodworm last night. They went crazy for them, but a couple of the neons (both female I think) overdid it and their bellies were *huge*! They looked like they might explode. Thankfully they were back to normal this morning. I think they may have stolen from other fish, as I only dropped the worms in one at a time, enough for one apiece. Also one of my cherry shrimp sucked a bloodworm clean - something I didn't think would happen! Anyway, loving your videos - I'm new to the hobby with my first tank.

Hey Matt, great information. I have been using two different types of "Repashy" fish food. Soilent greens and Grub Pie for the past maybe 8 years. Have amazing results. Have you ever tried them? The soilent green is like crack for my mbuna

Great content. Just took up fish keeping last month and can across your videos shortly after. One question I had that I didn’t hear you cover was feeding specifically for crayfish, do you let them just clean the tank or can you put something directed for their diet ?
@FishShopMatt
@FishShopMatt Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I would always feed something for crayfish. It will help with moulting and general health, also stop them possibly going after fish. Any sinking food will give them something to eat and then shrimp or snail food will give them some extra calcium.

Could you do species video on Clown plecos? I have one and only see him once every 2 weeks at best 😆 but I have always wondered about food etc as you never see him at feeding time
@FishShopMatt
@FishShopMatt Жыл бұрын
Hahaha if I ever see mine I'll make one. Generally they will eat a varied diet so algae wafers, pellets, some veggies and some frozen food just keep rotating the food.

Matt, could you help on a matter of holiday feeding. We plan a weeks break and there is nothing that I can see that is suitable for top, middle and bottom feeders all in one tank. Not in a position to purchase automatic feeders as I have a number of tanks. Could you offer any advice please. Many thanks, John

Hi Matt, what about african cichlids.
@FishShopMatt
@FishShopMatt Жыл бұрын
Depends on what type. Malawi open water are generally omnivores Malawi rock dwellers are generally algae grazer Tanganyikan are mostly omnivores but Tanganyikan tropheus and a couple other species are algae grazers African river are generally omnivores but there will be exceptions. I like the idea of a cichlid feeding video so watch out for that.

MATT, should i turn filter off while feeding, still water or moving water????
@FishShopMatt
@FishShopMatt Жыл бұрын
Ooooo great question! So I always leave mine running. But if you have a strong filter and a lot of your food disappears before the fish get a chance, some people do turn it off. If it's an external you could always slow it down for a few minutes via the tap. I always worry that I'll forget to turn it back on.

after12 months of smooth sailling this week i decided to clean my filter (badly) and ended up spewing horrible green much into the tank. I lost a couple of fish too!! opps...
@FishShopMatt

Oh no! Might have been oxygen loss due to the muck, or possibly a spike in a pollutant. It's hard to deal with but if you get a fine net you can place it over the outlet ready for when you turn it back on.
