You need long walks, especially with the standard poodle. The first 2-3 years, i had to walk/play with him for at least 4 hours. They are very smart & attached to their owner. Well, they are hunting dogs & retrivers. So of course they need to exersize & they always stay close to the owner. They dont know how to entertain themselves. The amazing part is that they never overeat. So you dont have to portion their food. Well, it makes harder to train them since they are not food driven. You dont need to brush their teeth. A stick & chew are way better options. But you might need to brush them relatively often, or give them a shor haircut.

I was coming to say, this is why an ethical breeder is a MUST!! Of course some issues can’t be helped regardless but it lessens the risk. My boy has gorgeous teeth and I don’t brush them, he gets raw bones a few times a week.

@mobstercrow7515
@mobstercrow7515 5 ай бұрын
Their ears need to be plucked because you can't brush inside of their ears. It will get matted and grow inside of the ear canal. You can't shave the inside of their ears which is why you have to pluck it. It is a necessity in this breed or else they will get very nasty ear infections.

As already was mentioned, they are incredibly intelligent and learn super fast. Additionally, poodles love to please (unlike Huskies, which are known for being very smart AND very stubborn). Just make sure to be absolutely consistent in your training, otherwise a poodle can absolutely challenge your training if you are inconsistent in your expectations of the dog.

You do realise without a breeder there would not be any dogs in the shelter, right? You are not circumventing the system, only preventing a puppy from not experiecing the pain of a bad owner before you find it. Also, in general Standard Poodle dont end up in shelters. Do a search for standard poodles that are not mixed mutts that are available for adoption in the country right now. Every time I have ever checked, that number is essentially zero.
@kvondutch
@kvondutch Жыл бұрын
@@Luckingsworth I get your point. I’m not saying to not go through breeders. I rescued a standard poodle from a mill in June but it did take me a few years to find the right pup. Just saying that it can be done. Also coming from a family that has had 5 poodles most from breeders, I’m pretty familiar with the process of rescue and breeder specific adoptions so I certainly know what I’m doing. What I did was help facilitate a forever home for the animal care foundation that rescued him. I don’t hold any value of that either. Just happy with my pups
@CrazyPoodle

@@kvondutchthey generally dont end up in shelters. You rescued straight from mill? You gave the money to puppy mill? As you think you did good, they wikl keep going because of that good deed you did. Not only that, puppy mill is asking for problems. Which no one Waits for. They will be unhealthy

There are usually toy, moyen, and standard poodles for adoption around here for under 300 dollars. I'm getting my standard poodle from my cousin that is a quality breeder on June 7th. He will be training to be my service dog. Service dogs take about 1-3 years to train and only 40-50% pass their training. They retire around 9-10 years old. My first two service dogs were adopted, I chose to get a puppy from a breeder this time because I didn't want to work harder to train an adult dog. I'm moving and starting college next year so this dog has to be trained by then. It's a LOT easier to train them when they are younger. My cousin health tests the parents and she has won multiple shows. I need a healthy dog so he will be able to work as long as possible, my entire future depends on him! I have 20+ pets, all of them except for my fish, snake, and chickens have been rescued. Within the past few years, 13 cats have showed up at my doorstep, I've found homes for 3 of them, adopted 4 of them, and I'm currently working on taming the rest so they can be in the TNR program so they can't breed. I often buy items that our shelter needs and donate it. I'm volunteering at a horse rescue when I move also. I got very lucky with this poodle puppy, my cousin sells them for 4000 dollars because she puts a lot of work into them. She knows how badly I need another service dog since mine is retiring soon so she gave me a discount, I only have to pay 300 dollars for a quality bred puppy! I'm very grateful for her.

They are very easy to raise, I've talked to a few breeders, they used to breed labs and goldens but switched to poodles. Poodles are AMAZING! They can do every sport, they excel in service and therapy work, they are great detection dogs, and great search and rescue dogs. They are better than labs, they are retrievers also. They are great swimmers and hunters. They do need to be brushed daily with a high quality chris christensen brush and a greyhound comb, they need to be taken to the groomers every month. They don't shed. I'm getting my first Spoo next month and I will be grooming him myself. I've wanted to groom dogs since I was 4, my dream is finally coming true! You can buy a bravura (I think that's how it is spelled) for 200 dollars, they are cordless and I believe they have a 5 in 1 blade, they are one of the best clippers! It costs 100-150 dollars to take a poodle to the groomers, or you can buy a pair of clippers, straight shears, curved shears, and chunkers and groom them yourself!

I had a miniature, not a standard. I made his food myself. I bought organic, grass fed beef - hamburger in bulk, steak when I could afford it, and organic free range chicken (be sure to remove the bones. He also had some carrots and peas (not too much) & femur beef bones from the local kosher meat market. He took vitamins, joint supplements, and collagen supplements. He was vaccine damaged as a pup and developed infectious arthritis. He was on probiotics to keep the strep & yeast under control. He lived 18 years. Poor baby, his arthritis became so painful & debilitating that we put him to sleep w/ love & dignity.

I think you do something wrong. Poodles dont overeat & very picky with food. My poodle would refuse to eat before a walk. He will stay hungry for a day or two, even if I offer him a fresh stake. He will literally go on a hunger strike. Also, you dont need to brush their teeth. Raw food diets solves dental issues. Also playing with a stick & having chew, solves all the dental problems.

@@exploringnoelle Nice. 100% My point is that they are one of the oldest breeds. They are healthy. Majority of health issues come from the poor diet & lack of exersize. It's the same with people. Actually there is a theory that People have bad teeth since we switched to carbs & sugar. The Hunter-gatherer societies generally have good teeth. It's the same with dogs. Dry food has sugars & additives & bad carbs.... It's stick to the teeth & destroys them. Raw food doesn't do that. And the body absorbs the food better. All the dogs on raw diet, poo less & it's perfect. The poo sticks to my dog arse only when I dont feed him right. Otherwise he poo the little stone like pebbles. Well, the same with humans.
