such a good addition to my practice. I'm finding it working for me better if I think "i'm starting the chromatic scale on the second note", which is the same thing as what you're showing us lol. Awesome lesson. beautiful examples. that one from scale degree 5 into the important minor is so good

Given that he came up with the chromatic scale later in life, do you think he was intending it as a simplification of the descending 1/2 step rules - which are quite complex? It seems like the chromatic scale is allowing you to create similar sounding lines without so much thought being given to how many half steps can be placed in the phrase based on whether you start on the 1,3,5, or 7 vs starting on 2,4, or 6.

Hi, Chris. I discover this transcribing Hank Mobley, and he would also use it in triplets starting on the beat, it sounds so good man.

Hi Chris , I love all your videos and find them so inspiring and helpful . Wondering if you have any videos on Chromatic minor scale . Pretty easy to figure out by using the same rules as other chromatic scales but when combining it with chords or half step rule of scales would I think of min6 diminished chords or chords from melodic minor? Do you have any videos on this ?

Could you do harmonic minor? I'm just curious in the approach because of the 3 half steps and the minor 3rd.

Very good lessons. What do you do with the lines you come up with? Write them down or memorize them or let them go immediately? I find if I memorize them I sound like playing an etude, if I don’t then its hard to get the concepts into my playing. How to train to come up with lines spontaneously is the hardest thing for me. Thanks!

On the off chance that you respond to comments on older videos… How do the chromatic scale rules intersect with diminished 6th scales? Dim6th scales already have the extra note, so are they entirely separate tools?

Hello sir, maybe I overlooked this in one of the vids, but how does Barry handle the minor third in Harmonic Minor when applying his chromatic scale to it? Thanks in advance! Cheers, Daniel

i'm interested in this answer, too. I know two things that don't directly answer but sound really beautiful: applying the chromatic scale to the minor6 diminished scale (so Dmin6dim, which has both D harmonic and melodic within it) and also, if we're thinking of d harmonic minor, applying it to C dom7 ending on the 3rd of A. Both of these include the harmonic minor sound but get around that augmented 2nd (minor 3rd) interval in satisfying ways

@@TheLabyrinthofLimitations I'll have to translate from the Harris language, but yes, I will definitely check those out! Thanks. Other structures that I'd like to apply the Harris Chromatic scale to include symmetric augmented scales, and pentatonic scales. I've come to think of the Harris Chromatic like a watermark on a blank piece of paper. The chromatic scale is the page, and whatever logo is clearly communicated with the water mark.

Hi,I wanted to share my thoughts with someone In a Natural Major, seven chords have specific functions I,iii,vi - tonic ii,IV - subdominant V,vii - dominant but what is happening in Harmonic Major? (ionian flat 6) in harmonic minor there is even worse because ionian #5 has no perfect fifth ,so, where is dominant for this mode? On vii degree or nowhere? Could You make video/videos about harmonic Major and his modes? Modal progressions for each mode etc :) Meanwhile could you recommend some "songs" based on harmonic major modes? Classical, neoclassical music, whatever :)

Great tip as all ways and can you please slowly show parallel motion it's harder than it looks at regular tempo. I couldn't quite grab it. You played it too fast if you don't mind.
