Why then do we pay tax? If its not worth anything or tied to anything of value. Why don't they just print more money.

They do just print more money, thats why we have inflation, the money printing that has gone on since covid is insane.

Money never was worth anything by itself. Also Gold has only the value we attribute to it, because for instance, we like shiny things. As an asset, Gold does not pay rent. It does not help with hunting deer, planting crops or building a home. All Gold has for it is that it does not rot, and it looks nice - which is as psychological as paper money's value. And it is scarce enough, that you don't need a wheelbarrow to carry enough around of it for your daily shopping. The value of money lies in the fact that you can pay off your debt with, and the courts recognize it and void your debt, if you hand over enough of the special paper sheets.
