Think like a Cambridge student using logic

While at Cambridge I studied a lot of logic. And it has helped me immeasurably both while I was studying and in my wider life. With logic you can analyse an argument to see if it should be persuasive. You become much more alert to when someone is using rhetorical tricks to win you over, as opposed to cold hard reasoning. Overall, you become a better thinker and a better student.
So here I share with you the first steps to thinking like a logician. We learn how to put an argument in propositional form, and then how to check it for soundness or validity.

So what's correct reason? What reason you chose? All mammals breastfeed ( considering gender ) and platypus one. Both are factually wrong. So what's the correct reason you considered? For it not being sound. And great communication and teaching style please bring logic and critical thinking basics. I am struggling and read book on logic and now your video got recommended. Great stuff. Continue this series.

What about a genetical anomaly, like an albino raven? Do we omit such possibility because it is an anomalies, statistical outliers or did you omit it entirely for the sake of the video?

Basically statements which do not contradict one another within the argument (valid), and any other existing statements outside (sound). Where is my cambridge admit offer ?

Fantastic! I think it demonstrates the difference between checking for validity (which you can check just by looking at an argument) and for soundness (which you need to look at the world to check)

I would say the argument is valid, if the first statement is true then "all breastfeeding mammals" must be all mammals and the conclusion is therefore true. It is however not sound because the first statement is untrue. The second statement I think is true but nonetheless the conclusion is false.

@@unsolicitedadvice9198The statement 'All mammals breastfeed' is ambiguous. It could mean ''Every single individual animal of the category mammal breastfeeds at some point in their life'. Or it could mean ''Every single individual adult female animal of the category mammal is capable of breastfeeding'. Both of these are obviously untrue. It's a poor choice of example, I'm afraid.

Haha! I tend to avoid the word “syllogism” because some people use it in the Aristotelian sense, and some use it in the more general sense of valid logical argument, and I was aiming for the more general sense here (though my examples may have all been Aristotelian syllogisms here, I can’t recall)

Unvalid and unsound. All breastfeeding mammals are in the group of "Breastfeeding mammals"; The other group is "Not breastfeeding and just enjoying life mammals:)".
