For every NATO exercise, there’s a blue team - the “good guys” who come to train and test their skills - and the “bad guys”, who put them to the test by taking on the role of the enemy.
At the US Army’s Hohenfels Training Area in southern Germany, the bad guys are One-Four - First Battalion, Fourth Infantry Regiment. Based in Europe, their full-time job is making sure NATO Allies get a bracingly realistic training experience. Far more than walking targets, One-Four’s soldiers simulate everything from conventional warfare to hybrid tactics, working day and night to keep the training audience on their toes. They make sure that NATO’s forces walk out of Hohenfels sharper and better prepared than when they walked in.
NATO video producers joined One-Four during Exercise Saber Junction 22. They signed on with the unit’s infamous Scout Platoon, which is often tasked with probing Allied defences under the cover of darkness. Over the course of 24 hours, they found out exactly what it takes to fill this demanding - and for Allied forces, crucially important - role: creativity, stamina and a good sense of humour.
The exercise Saber Junction 22, involved more than 4,400 participants from Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Georgia, Hungary, Kosovo, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

I was a Scout in 1/33 Armor from 1977-1978. During maneuvers at Hohenfels, Reforger '78 and other sites, we spent much of our time behind 'enemy' lines, gathering intel, and wreaking havoc! Although the regulation uniform was OD green (Vietnam era uniforms), we were allowed to wear woodland camo when in the field. Great times! Scouts out!

@michaelmichelsson That was one of the main lessons of the excellent 19th century Prussian officer corps. Churchill incorrectly used the word "Prussian" to mean regimented and without imagination. In fact, the German word kreigspiel really meant play, not just imitate. Prussian officers played with a lot of different possibilities in the course of their training, and were expected to be able to make it up on the fly when crisis time came.

Had some great memories fighting these guys. Between my 2 MGSs, and 1 ATGM (I gunned on one of the MGSs) we held a hill against over a company of their Mech and Tanks. The lead OC told us their company CDR was after us after smoking him and his guys by ourselves. Following day, we met and after killing all of his BMPs and T72s, they called in a HIND-D which finally got us. (Helicopter kills are complicated, and though I shot it with an HE 105, the MILES is radio-in with grid to kill.) Later, another truck from our PLT got him down the road. Sad to say, the Army no longer uses the Stryker MGS, and that unit was disbanded. Good fight 1-4! "Sabre Recon" "Fight the Truck!" -Qtrp 4/2CR
