Watching this makes me realize how far we Americans are in terms of EVs. The Inflation Act also makes much more sense especially from a bipartisan view of getting it passed to insulate American car makers (for a while, at least) from Chinese EVs. Sandy Munro is right though, the Chinese will likely take a huge part of the market share, just like the Japanese did when they first entered the American market. Is this another instance of our car industry looking for short term profits over long term growth again? Why is history repeating itself even though the American auto industry saw what happened in the 80s?
@InsideChinaAuto Жыл бұрын
Great points, and it's exactly for the reasons you said. Unchecked, the Chinese brands will make a huge dent in legacy auto sales, so both Europe and the US need to take some protectionist measures to look after their own. Eventually Chinese cars will take a decent chunk of both markets and it'll be up to the legacy brands to offer a compelling alternative. First movers always have an advantage and China sunk a lot into EVs.
@TJ347 Жыл бұрын
I'd not be so sure about that, as we could well be looking at the EV version of the Yugo. This is before you consider that lithium batteries are clearly not viable as a replacement for most gasoline vehicles on the road, let alone all of them. There just isn't enough accessibile lithium to make that happen, so we need an alternative fuel source.
@InsideChinaAuto Жыл бұрын
@TJ347 Sodium batteries anyone? Ah yes, both BYD and JAC are bringing the to the market. And from experience (of both China and Yugos) I can assure you there's not a car here that compares to a Yugo. 10 years ago, yes, but not anymore.
@TJ347 Жыл бұрын

Great video, and thank you so much for filming it. That Brittish politeness made me smile when you get frustrated for a split second, as the clueless person seemingly went out of their way to stay center frame, for a good 5 to 10 seconds about half way through. Dude says "hello, just make sure you stand in teh middle of a video filming" I smiled at that one. I give your sarcasm a hard 7 for that one. Not bad, but could use some refinement. lol. Those Merc's at around 52 minutes. They remind me of the old conversion vans from the 80's and 90's we "the US" used to have all over the place. There would be big Dodge, or Ford vans, tricked out with a bunch of wood, and lighting. Curtains on the windows, mini fridges, that sort of thing. They'd usually have funky stripes, and odd shapes, on the extierior, along with some body work. There were also trucks, usually Chevy silverado's that got the same treatment. You always knew them by the body kits, and deep dish 5 spoke wheels. I actually owned a GMC S15 conversion truck. Black to blue fade metallic paint, and lots of wood overlay on the inside. I got it becasue it was rare to see a compact truck get that treatment. Those Mercedes vans took me back to that era. They're clearly influenced some by that old trend.
@publicprofilename4273 Жыл бұрын
Then you said Merc wasn't there. Whatever those things at 52 minutes are. I just thought they'd changed badging in the conversion, but I gues I was totally wrong about the brand in the first place. Oh well, other than the brand, my comments are still valid.

No, you're right, they were all Mercs (most of them anyway) in that section, but they weren't there as an official Mercedes stand, they were some kind of customising company. They're doing some great stuff and starting to develop their own design language now, which is great. Still plenty of running in the race though, let's see which ones survive the next 5-10 years.

Truly impressive for a country that was not visible in auto industry 25 years ago. However, if you have seen one, you have seen them all, including Koreans and others. Germans still have some edge in design and technology. I have just bought a 20 years old sporty car, from era when cars were cars and needed a driver to DRIVE it, to safeguard from tsunami of plastic autonomous blobs, controlled by... Who Knows?

This was fascinating. I think I understand recent BMW styling when I see some of the styling themes on Chinese cars, still doesn't make it right though, does it? On the other hand it makes me understand less why the Japanese are effectively committing suicide with their leisurely adoption of EVs. Great video, I'll look out for more.

@@InsideChinaAuto anyone of them .. or are they like the German junk that last only till warranty is up
@InsideChinaAuto7 ай бұрын
@slowazbmwkilla3073 I think that's a fair point about the industry. The simple fact is that car makers make very little money on the sale of the car and much more on the parts sold afterwards. Benz cars used to be bulletproof, but that didn't help their profits, so they made cheaper cars to get both more customers and more parts money, and now they're nothing like what they were. EVs in general are more reliable than ICE cars because of less moving parts, but no, I don't think the Chinese will be trying to make them any more bulletproof than anybody else to be totally honest.

I lots of Australians started using Chinese car on the road, it is because they are more affordable since the car pricing had been sky-rocketing high. people in general will trade in their car before 160K on the mileage to keep their trade in value. At the end of the day, you only need a car to get you safe from point A to point B. For your everyday needs and Weekend getaway. Not for a bloody car racing on the highway for speeding fine and losing your driving license. For the reality that I will never buy Ford, Audi and Lamborghini and paying an overprice car parts replacement and servicing. So I will be interested for what Chinese brands can offers to the working class people. To treat working class people to enjoy a premium drving seat with the high end technology. But not for the bloody spoiled rich people for a change!
@InsideChinaAuto Жыл бұрын
Well, the rich will always get rich somehow, and even in China where the prices are crazy low at the minute, brands like Geely are still getting double-digit profit margins. But the factories of Chinese brands are increasingly automated (I've seen this with my own eyes) and they're just better at developing and trusting their digital modelling. The others need to catch up fast. The Chinese will come in successfully at the cheaper end first and steadily develop a decent reputation in premium, enough to pull sales from the legacy brands.

What is EREV?
@InsideChinaAuto Жыл бұрын
Extended range electric vehicle. It means the power is delivered by motors via electricity from the battery, but EREVs also have an engine that can only charge the battery, so if the battery runs out, there's still chance to charge it by running the engine. The engine cannot drive the wheels though, only charge the battery. It does mean you're always carrying an engine round whether you use it or not, but gives the benefit of electric power (fast, smooth torque, no gears) with the comfort of knowing you can still have power even if there's no charging stations around as the engine can top up the battery (fuel is still easier to find than charging stations in remote areas).
