My thought is you would have generated more lift and speed by NOT changing your thrust angle. By changing the thrust to a more downward angle to the chord line you have two probable effects: 1. Losing some of your forward thrust to aft pitch moment due to deflection down from forward of your CL and 2. causing higher speed airflow Under your forward wing causing lower pressure differential compared to the upper wing surface. You ideally want the high speed airlflow over the top of the wing and lower speed airflow under it. The wings under camber and AOA would already contribute to its having a damming effect to cause a high pressure in ground effect that you somewhat negated but blowing higher speed air under the wing.

@larrybremer4930 Жыл бұрын
I did some additional reading on the Russian ekranoplans and picked up a few more tidbits. The ekranoplan did indeed deflect the jet thrust under its main wing, but this was due to the design where the wing was part of its floating hull and this thrust was only present to help get this wing out of the water and into the airstream, then the deflectors would be retracted to thrust perpendicular to its chord line. Also only the main lifting wing was in ground effect and this makes sense. With the stabilizing wing being outside of ground effect its lift would have a linear relationship to velocity, where the main wing has a dual relationship with velocity and ground effect. Thus as the ekranoplan got out of ground effect the main wing loses lift while the stabilizing wing does not causing it to descend. Conversely if you deep inside of ground effect the main wing lift increased but the stabilizing wing remains unchanged causing the ekranoplan to ascend. These effects caused a build in stability so that velocity would be the determining factor to stabilize at an altitude at a given trim and balance. The ingenuity of Russian designers never ceases to amaze me.

Almost there! Why the landfill? That's why you'd need quarter-circle hydrofoils, so you'd be airborne much faster (instead of not-at-all), but forget about the beaching (super cool feature). Now, the Lippisch-style ekranoplan has a Pi-tail and a lawnmower engine close to the CoG, giving a lot of extra torque to take off, electric motors just suck. Also, I figured out how to attach canards at the front of the front wing instead of having them detached in front: now, it's the entire wing profile that changes, not just the airflow on the attack edge. You see, here in East Cork, the closest body of water is the Sea, and it's pretty choppy... Thank you for all the insights and the tests!

Wonder if a hydrofoil on the bottom center section would help with raising the whole boat out of the water easier so you could direct the thrust from the propellers accordingly to gain more speed out of them. Naturally the wings would start to generate for lift, but with the foil in the water it could help keep it closer to the water and maybe create a little more stability at higher speeds. Maybe be able to control the air cushion a little better too. I haven’t put much thought into it but maybe that’s an idea 💡

Wow, very epic! Even the fish were jumping with excitement (10:23) Excellent teamwork. Assume this GIANT DYI Ekranoplan was fully manual controlled, no flight computer, lidar magic to hold a constant altitude like many previous RC Ekranoplans? Am curious if you got any current, voltage measurement while Ekranoplanning? (7:40) Would make great reference data to compare to power (watts) at speed compared to power needed by a speed boat keep up in a chase. Nice choice of audio for the chase scene (7:25) BTW. A light-weight fabric tonneau cover and windshield might save you enough drag to get airborne. Next try reducing thrust angle, then end plates on each side of the fuselage extending a few inches into the water in the step area, and finally end plates at the four wingtips. The wingtip plates may increase the risk of instability in turns, but its not my neck:)

You wanna make it leave the water surface with a pilot onboard? You just need to add, in the immortal words of Jeremy Clarkson, MORE POWER!! MOAR!! Longer 2x4 (to give the props more clearance) wider boom for better roll stability, bigger props with steeper pitch for more pull, and proper grunty motors to spin them. toss in a couple more batteries, and bob's your uncle, you've got a proper GEV. :D
@wiegraf9009 Жыл бұрын
More power alone could turn it into a conventional airplane, which isn't what they want
@KymHammond2 жыл бұрын
Congratulations!! If flies! Second set of motors behind pilot and in front of back wing. Motor banks can be separately rotated between the two positions to achieve the right variations between push and float. Hull design directly under pilot is an inverted “w” shape with the centre not as deep as the out sides. This will give you less drag in the water at take off or as the craft moves from full float to skimming through the tops of swell. Plus, as the craft lands on land the two outside peaks operate as landing rails like a helicopter. Looking forward to your next innovation.
