Here's how I build a real floating hoverboard from back to the future. It works using ground effect to hover on a cushion of air right above the ground.

You do know that the point of the future in BttF was supposed to be to _parody_ overly specific predictions about future, right? The intent was never supposed to be "this is what the future will be like", more like "wouldn't it be funny if we tried to claim that 2015 would be exactly like this".

If you made it like 10-20% more powerful so that it didn’t need to fully rely on the ground affect, you may be able to get it to work over water and move independently without too much extra power / danger. What about the soviet ekranoplan, that used ground effect to work on water.
@cullenhutchison6528
@cullenhutchison6528 4 ай бұрын
@@JohnSmith-ef8nr Gradual decreases in elevation are inevitable for ground effect vehicles (GEVs) traveling over fluids since the air pushes away the fluid directly below the vehicle. This explains the failure in the video, as the hoverboard is a pure GEV. However, with additional lift--i.e., generated by airfoils--even the diminished ground effect over water could be sufficient to keep a GEV hovering, especially if it was constantly moving away from the water it already disturbed. This would require significant speed, but that makes sense for the ekranoplan. TL;DR: Airfoils and speed.

It was done with air, but I don’t know exactly how it worked. I think I remember it being quite loud, but this was around 10 years ago, so my memory isn’t great. If you use the downward air from the outer fans to trap a high pressure under the middle of the board, you can use less fans, less batteries and electronics, and seal holes, making it lighter and more effective. For water you will need to interact with a larger ground effect region so your bouyant force doesn't go so low into the water and splash up, meaning you need to make the board wider and keep the fans away from the surface and splash, or keep the size and place the fans higher, interacting with more air and trapping more volumes of high pressure or velocity air. This is why hovercraft use skirts, because you can pneumatically fill the area with far less energy than continuously jetting yourself off of atmospheric mass and ground backpressure.

Never seen someone actually do a back 2 the future hoverboard so well, I honestly thought you would have tried to put something to stop the water from coming in and not just go for it but you're right you did nail it just like the move. I'd also really love those shoes lol.

The shape makes it awkward, I also think you could've used less EDF to make it less clunky. I suppose after the fine tuning above, making it fly forward without a tether as help would be amazing. Y'all are the engineers I'll let you figure it out. Respect from Canada 🤙

I believe the final test over water 'may' have been achieved if the curtains were applied; similar to the hovercraft method. Congrats on the ground-effect hoverboard 10/10. 🏆

As a skater who always dreamt of making something like this but couldn't figure out how to make it work without a magnetic field or an engine so big that would be completely different from what I envision, I would buy this. I want to buy this. Take my money.

You'd pay over 40 kUSD for a hovering board that doesn't even work as a method of transportation?

Im really happy you made this. It was actually Back To The Future that inspired me to be a Film major, and seeing it come to life is making my inner child happy, so thank you on behalf of the 12 year old version of myself. As for a new project, you should make a whip that magically wraps around objects like in the movies, being able to grab or wrap something from a distance. ❤

That plank with fans is actually super similar to something my neighbor made when we were kids. It was made with the exhaust from a vacuum though. Fun project for a couple of kids lol. Only limited by the length of the extension cord.

A good rule of thumb. If its going on or near water. Just make it water proof. Dont even bother not considering it. Just do it. Also. Drainage. Water will get in, so give it a way to get out. Think about your directions of momentum and place your holes accordingly.

Would love to see more movie objects outside of marvel and dc

I know super conductors won't work for this project, but for future reference if you need a bunch maybe consider teaming up with NileRed, he made himself a bunch in the past. Also I'm an electrical engineer myself; you said your scared of those fans getting stuck on at full load, but have you considered using a short circuit safety relay or something along those lines to current limit the supply? I can think of a few things you can do to prevent such a thing from happening. So obviously your using DC so you're not using a VFD (variable frequency drive) to control the speed of the motors, but you have to he using some kind of drive that's using resistance or something that's controling the speed of the motors and usually there you configure a safety limit too. It's alot easier to do it with a VFD on AC motors using hz, just because limiting the frequency that the VFD outputs limits the voltage too because they go hand in hand, for instance if you do 30hz instead of America's standard 60hz that's half the cycles so it would be half the voltage, so being that you get alot more control over AC versus DC a inverter might not be bad idea for another project. Current limits, hertz, list goes on and on what you can do with a VFD, I even have limited AC motors to certain amount of RPM's.

Great video. I was wondering if the hover board would work with an air curtain around the outer jets to keep the air under the board instead of blowing out around the sides. Or angling the outer jets inward instead of all being flat. Anyways Glad I found your channel. Looking forward to seeing the others videos.

I can't believe the amount of engineering over 2 years to accomplish this board, and they didn't account for the fact they are just going to displace the water with the fans and gravity was going to do the rest? x) Props to them regardless, looks like they had a ton of fun and met some pretty cool people along the way! :)
