Many guitar players seem to forget that if you are gonna spend a considerable amount of money anyway, you can have your guitar custom built. That is what we luthiers do. You will have a far superior quality and exactly the way you want it to be.

Nice video Cole! Thanks for sharing your experience, it is really cool that you have like the “traditional” vintage Gibson but also the Kramer which gives an interesting perspective of different takes of vintage and guitar construction

I was born two months before the Gibson Les Paul made it's debut, so I was around before the "V" word, "vintage", came into common usage and these instruments were simply known as "second hand" guitars and the fact that they were second hand for the most part just made them significantly less expensive than their newer counterparts hanging on the walls of music stores. So maybe you can see how the whole "just wait and before long, you'll have a vintage guitar" thing seems rather silly to me.

I'm not so sure a 79 Gibson constitutes a "vintage" guitar. I get that it's actual age may cause some folks to consider it "vintage", but I think the term "vintage", in discussion about guitars, is actually more directed towards the 50s and 60s instruments. There was some cosmic stuff going on back then with a lot of strats and les pauls, but there's still plenty of turds out there too.

I can see that argument. I tend to go off of the more “literal” definition of vintage though

I had a small vintage bass collection the 1990's, one of my most cherished was a 1965 Fender jazz bass, all original, with original strings on it and ashray covers and the price tag string still tied around the neck at the nut...I was terrified of doing anything to it, didn't want to play it, didn't want to scuff the case because it was so valuable...so it sort of sat around as a collectible investment and was in essence no longer a guitar. I had a backup bass a 73' fender jazz (my others were all p basses) but i didn't tour or gig with it, as i didnt want to risk it being stolen or subjected to the abuses of the road...so my touring bass was a 80's era Squier JV modded out with emg pickups and it really became my bass, the one i gigged and played all the time, so i sold off the others. I still have to this day and now it's "vintage", but I still abuse it like I always have lol.

I like my vintage guitars to come with stories. I like to imagine where they've been and what they've seen. New guitars, and I have several, are just commodities.

I have a 1954 Guild X150 archtop. My grandpa used to run moonshine and on one particular run he delivered the product and noticed the guitar. He said he'd take it over the money....and when I started playing he gave it to me. I can't image what it had seen if it was owned by moonshiners. Has the mojo

I have only 1 electric guitar which is my dad's. My dad is the original owner and he told me great story's with his band. This guitar has a good semnification to me also because its how i can perform more "ROCK" music. I remember that one time my dad told me he wants to sell it but it turn out he just could not do it because its he has good memories with it. Thats why I love my vintage guitar , even tho it does not stay in tune and needs work to be done to it.🙂🙃

I’ve had the same strat for 20 years. I wonder when it will be considered vintage? Anyone think it would be worth it to sell it and buy a new exactly what I think I want now, or, new pickups and bridge, and fret crown/polish?

I believe quite the opposite when it comes to owners. A guitar has a broader history with stories to tell of where it has been and who played it. What exciting story has your Kramer got? Seems it's stayed on the same block. Not being sarcastic mind you. I think it's great that it was handed down and stayed in the family. I have a 1978 Electra MPC X930 Vulcan That plays phenomenal. I have had it a number of years and bought it from another state, owned by a few different owners. This guitar has many stories, most of them unknown. It leaves the field open for imagination. What I like the most is the fact that it has an unusual spring whammy bar from the 70's that I was told by a pro builder was not added on after the build but was placed on when it was built after examination. The crazy thing is, No others have this. I purchased it because I became separated from a similar Electra I owned in the early 80's and wanted it back. The title "Don't," is definitely wrong and should be taken with a grain of salt. It depends on brand, condition and quality.

Didn't deter me cos I was never in the market. If you don't know trogly's guitar show you should check it out, he is a vintage gibson afficianado and reviews so many amazing vintage les pauls and sgs. Guitars like that 79 are beautiful, but yeah for the same kind of money you could have a modern equivalent and make it your vintage.
