I'm glad you brought up his upfake. I think when all is said and done, that's going to be his signature move. The reason being a combination of: His upfake is just his natural shooting motion His hands are so large that he can make a split second decision on whether to shoot it over the top, or drive if the defender sells out to try and block (which they have to given his height and his release point on his shot) He's so long that if he does drive he's in the paint so quickly the defense has a very hard time adjusting, and the Spurs are likely getting a 75+% 2PA up.
@culturewombat14 күн бұрын

There have been many "unicorns" before him (Sampson, Porzingas, Giannis, KAT, Jokic, etc) but what the Spurs did right this time was to not push him into the "Big Man" role. They didn't make him bulk up. They didn't make him focus on the low post. They have faith in him as a perimeter defender. They let him shoot as many 3s as a wing player. He isn't an extremely tall front court player that holidays in the perimeter. Wemby is being trained as a true wing player that is also an elite rim protector. A true unicorn.

@michaelahurt14 күн бұрын
@ryantristani5091 Possibly. But he's going to add weight whether he likes it or not. We don't keep our 20 year old bodies forever. Although I think he's closer to Giannis where he will add pure muscle and still be nimble. The bigger thing with mobility is injuries. I'd argue that was a bigger factor for guys like AD, KP, Embiid, Durant and Ewing than adding weight/strength
@t4d0W13 күн бұрын
Him being a perimeter defender is a given. His length makes it super difficult for smaller players to get a pass around him. Even if he's blown by his recovery to go with his long ass limbs lets him go after the shot at the rim. Also the 'big man' role in the modern NBA has changed. There aren't many bigs who are good playing back to the basket. If anything the strong and athletic wings who are good playmakers/shot creators are better at playing the back to basket bully ball role since they can feast on the mismatches. The best thing was building on his lob finishing ability and finding ways to get him opportunities for that. That give and go lob option is going to be his bread and butter for offense creation for years.

I'm not old enough to have seen Bill Russell, aside from highlights, but I've watched lots of games from defensive geniuses like Hakeem Olajuwon, Scottie Pippen, Kevin Garnett and Draymond Green...and I'm convinced Wembanyama has the greatest defensive instincts I've ever seen. Quite aside from his incredible size and athleticism, he just seems to have an almost perfect sense for what's happening around him and ends up in the right place.

@@facyum6221 Don't worry, I've watched plenty of both of them. I think you're wrong about them being a full tier above, but variety of opinion is what makes basketball discussion fun. Webanyama's ability to focus on a player in front of him, sniff out what's happening behind his back and teleport to snuff it at the very least rivals those two. You might be confusing experience with instincts--second year KG and second year Draymond did not look like veteran KG and veteran Draymond. Or, IMO, like Wemby does right now.

Lets put some things into perspective that people forget about NBA bigs; Not all of them are built to sustain the injuries that are killer to them like foot/ankle/high leg injuries. As amazing as Embiid is as a player, dude averaged playing 50-60 games a season with 68 at his best. Ralph Sampson was very good in his first 3 years with his first two playing the full regular season. But after a key left knee injury and not taking care of it, he was never the same player after. Wemby in his first rookie season managed to play 71. So here is hoping he conditions himself well to play like a big wing.

It's understandable to be hyped watching him, but talking about him like he will be the goat is probably not reality. As he ages he is going to take a lot of abuse at his position, and if they keep using him as primary ballscreener he's going to take a lot of hits especially in playoffs when guys are going to either go through him or fight to get around him with a lot more force than you see during the early regular season. He takes far too many shots from deep right now although he has improved this year on getting to the rim and playing his role as center. To be goat he will need to be healthy for a long time and come back from whatever injuries he sustains at the same level over a long career. That's much easier said than done and I think a career like Kevin Durant's is much more likely than becoming the goat. SO much has to go right for him to usurp guys in the top 10 and he should settle for being one of the best shot blockers or defenders of all time. At 35% he's not a poor 3pt shooter, but he is also very high volume which isn't a great winning recipe at his percentage. When he is taking 3's there is no one under the rim to get his rebounds which there needs to be about 2/3 of the time based on his percentage. He's similar to some other high volume shooters from deep like Brandon Miller, Maxey, Trae, and Harden, but the difference is that when they miss there is a center on the floor boxing out and trying to get extra possessions. When Wemby comes up the court and misses a transition 3 there is virtually no chance that the Spurs will get that rebound, and if he is hanging out around the perimeter playing stretch-center while his teammates are shooting it's the same story. It's not a sustainable recipe for success, especially in the post season... there is a reason his OWS has never been very high and this is a huge part of why. He is nearly 8ft tall he should be dominating the offensive glass but is only recording 2.8 offensive boards per 100 possessions right now, a decrease from last year. Is it fun to watch? extremely. And I dont know of another player with his skillset. But it's probably not going to be a meaningful recipe for team success if he is the primary ball handler, and primary 3pt shooter, and lacking on the offensive glass. Jeremy Sochan is averaging more offensive rebounds than he is and Jeremy is 6'8" while Wemby is 7'4". I don't think I need to spell out how that shouldn't be happening. Wemby's game needs to change to be more center-centric and he could really provide great metrics for winning basketball. He has the ability to lead the league in offensive rebounds but at this moment he doesn't even lead his own team.

I wouldn't say Luka will never live up to his GOAT potential - he gets better every year and clearly no one wants to face him in the playoffs. however, he's in a deeply competitive league right now. between Jokic, Giannis, Shai, Tatum, Wemby, and even other stars like Ant, Spida, LaMelo, Banchero, it's going to be crazy for years to come even after the LeBron generation retires. like, it is possible he may never win MVP for this reason.

@@rockysalvatore435 They tanked for the Admiral, he brought home an MVP and a DPOY. They tanked for Tim, he brought home five rings and two MVPs. You're shit, you get a pick and unless you're the 1998 Spurs who had an MVP level player who was just told to sit out the season, you will continue to be shit for the next couple years until the franchise can get the snowball rolling. No one even on that level who isn't Magic (who had the reigning MVP on his team) can win the chip in their rookie season. I was at the Bulls/Spurs game on the 6th, and what I noticed was how hard it is for him on offense because he currently has a heck of a time establishing position on the block. He has to catch the ball near or often behind the 3-point line simply because he gets moved around so easily by other players, and not only centers. If he can put on some more weight in the coming years to establish inside position for easier buckets, I think his offensive numbers and efficiency are going to skyrocket past what they currently are. That is wild to think about since he's already putting up very good numbers on solid efficiency. It would also be nice if the Spurs could find a backup center who can meaningfully contribute and allow Wemby to actually rest during games - by the end of that game he was completely out of energy, but before then his blocks and just his presence made layups against the Spurs look like an impossible task.

eFG% should be over 60% for a 7'4 guy and he's not there yet, but if he stays healthy and keeps adding muscle he's going to be an MVP candidate as early as next season. I think this new style of perimeter play and slashing to the hoop is a bad idea for guys this size, though and I'm predicting injuries. It's great to have all the skills, but a guy worth as much money as Wemby should be playing it safe and avoiding injury at least until the playoffs. He really only needs dunks and a 5-12 ft jumper. It's not a complicated game with his height, wingspan and shooting skills.

injuries arent something you adapt your game to avoid, theyre something you prepare for off the court. wemby is probably next to lebron in terms of healthiest players in the league. his regimen since youth has bullet proofed his body to avoid mishaps. wemby without a ton of muscle to allow physical dominance in the paint is doing the absolute best he can. but that muscle growth takes time and it's smarter imo to have him master everything else in his arsenal before that eventually happens.

As a Spurs fan my biggest issue with. Ic is that he can get into Kobe mode where he’ll take bad shots even when being guarded well. It took Kobe years to get proficient and even then he wasn’t exactly an efficient player. You can see this in his recent game against Giannis where Giannis held him pretty well because Vic kept settling for bad shots and not choosing to punish the smaller Giannis in the paint. He’ll learn… crazy to say this but he may be the best player in the league by next year.
