I've got a great idea for a single Superman issue, just off the top of my head. Lois approaches Superman and tells him she wants to write an article about 'what it's like to be Superman', because people just want to understand him better. She hands him a notebook, a pen, and asks him to jot some things down. Superman agrees. He flies up into the clouds and starts to think about it. He pulls out the little notebook and starts to write something down, then he hears a distress call. He flies down and saves a family from a burning building. Afterward, in the clouds again, with his notebook. He jots down: What it's like to be me... A bank alarm goes off. He flies down and saves hostages in a bank from some bad guys. Things continue along this vein: he teams up with the Flash to bring down one of his rogues, he stops a giant, rampaging robot, he saves a cat from a tree, etc. and so forth. At the end of the day, Superman meets Lois. He hands back the notebook and tells her that he was too busy trying to help people in Metropolis. He apologizes. Lois asks him to tell her all about his day instead, which he does. And that's what she writes her article about - a day in the life of Superman. The end. (I know, TLDR) Sorry - I don't have anything cleverer for that ending, I just thought it would be neat if Superman was so busy helping people that he didn't have time to talk about himself haha.

That's kind of like what Busiek did with his Astro City book. His superman clone (Samaritan) basically spent every day counting up the few seconds he could fly, basically spending the entire day in transit to somewhere he had to help people or fight evil and al he really wants to do is fly.
@tosweetdelight3 ай бұрын
@@christophertaylor9100 Yeah, I've read that first Samaritan story. It's a very good 'Superman' story (I believe it was the first issue of Astro City). Maybe that's what inspired me, unconsciously. But that is how I see Superman - someone who's trying to do the right thing by the people in his city, somewhat removed from the drama of questions like, 'Who is Superman really?' or, 'What if Superman was eeevil?' And just to add here, I don't even see Red Son's Superman as an evil character. What that story explores best is the question of nature vs nurture (and, also, what Russian Batman would be like).

What’s with every writers “dream Superman story” either being a depressing deconstruction or an evil superhuman story? Whatever happened to stories involving him trying to stop Titano or protecting Lois from an amorous Hercules or even, the tales of him trying to complete superhuman labors akin to the demigod. It appears that grim darkness is the only dead horse story that others want to do with Superman, from JMS to Bendis. I too am sick of all the edgy what if Superman was evil nonsense. I feel like a lot of writers these days just don’t like or understand the characters they are writing. They are always trying to subvert and ruin them, and it’s almost worse when it’s by accident because they simply don’t understand the characters history and core identity. As a spider-man fan I feel the entire current Amazing run has been written by a writer / editor creative team who simply do not like or understand the character or his supporting characters, especially important characters like MJ. You can see the real difference when it comes to something like Ultimate Spider-Man, where the writer actually seems to care about the character they are writing and the importance of their relationships, meaning it instantly becomes a lot more enjoyable, even if there may be some issues with pacing and other minor flaws. Same is happening a lot with X-Men, Batman and others, characters being written out of character to satisfy the zealous ideals of whatever “genius” is now writing and feels a current character is behind the times, and needs to be updated to reflect the writer’s own ideals and beliefs rather than staying true to the character’s history. We have knee jerk changes in persona and ideals to suit the latest vision, thereby rejecting all previous iterations, no matter how beloved, as being “wrong”. I used to be very tolerant of different takes on characters, but after a while it really does start to feel like a personal attack on all my comic book preferences as being “outdated and wrong”.

The whole evil Superman troupe has got to stop because the people who write him either don't understand the character or hate him and want to see him suffer. This is why I blame the DCEU and Injustice for starting the trend in the first place. Like come on, what's the point of making Superman evil when we have Bizarro, General Zod, or Ultraman to fill the role as an opposite antithesis to Superman. I also believe that Superboy Prime should never have been a villain back in Infinite Crisis when Geoff Johns could have used other villains to fill the void.

DC's big ideas. Evil Superman, or other heroes doing morally questionable things, and villains being portrayed as victims, or misunderstood, of getting redemption arcs, because mass murderers like Harley Quinn and Lex Luthor surely just needed a hug, or a lesbian fling. DC is staffed by horrible people, and it shows in their work. They constantly want to "deconstruct" heroes, have them fail, change their entire gimmick and world view, or outright replace them, and put villains at center stage. We're looking at you, Waller.

Geoff Johns gets too much of a pass for his involvement in the irreparable damage done to the DC universe. I'm not saying he is bad writer in the sense that he had nothiong but bad ideas, I'm saying he's bad because when he has a good or intriguing idea, he doesn't try and do it in a way that fits with the world as it is, he alters the world to make his story work, and that often has a rippling effect that screws up everything around it one way or another. It shows a lack of respect for those that came before and he's better off doing his own thing rather that working inside the framework of the DC universe.
