@Typhoon250 : I know not all, but I tend to hear the bad and see the bad results and see the aftermath of most all horses sports. When money and winning is involved, the horses suffers. When a horse is nothing more than an investment or prize the horse suffers. If a horse is not a partner, friend and is not needed then they suffer. Horses are best cared for when man needs them to help his own survival. Abuse will always be everywhere man is.

This is a great vid Rick great information. I use a variety of hays but not much of the alfalfa only a little on occasions. One big point you could add in is the importance of breaking up the hay for your horse it gives you a great chance to see whats in it and it's less likely to cause colic. I have opened up flakes and found wire and twine in them before. So definitely 5 minutes well spent.

can you talk more about colic... how they get it, treating it, signs.. etc?

I agree with you. Sadly there are too many people who lack understanding that horses are not people and have very differrent needs.

@jupitarlove : The horses will tell you, start off slow and add more and more each day, more feedings per day is better than one or two. Start with a half flake each and then move up until the horses start leaving hay and not eating it all. I like my horses to have a little to eat whenever they want, so after a while you can just put out 3 or 4 flakes and the horse will be used to eating a little all day and they will gobble or eat all at once, but you have start slow

@DaddyLJ1 : Free choice hay, leave hay out 24/7 so the horse can graze all day, some oats and rice bran is good for weight, Leave out grass hay, oat or rye and sup with Alfalfa twice a day, weight comes off slow and comes back slow don't rush it, exercise help builds muscle and increases appetite, a little crack corn is also good with grain, some carrots and apples is good fiber, don't lock horse up more time out moving it best, less is more, don't over-do sups and grain, lots of grass hay

@Delkolovr2 : Everything in moderation, changing feeds dramatically like from grass to alfalfa shocks the system and increases the chance of colic. Slowly adding some Alfalfa to the grass and then slowly removing grass from the horse is better so the horse can adjust. Feeding a little of both is better and grass is said to produce more heat for horses in the winter than alfalfa, but alfalfa is higher in protein so it keeps weight, I feed grass for warmth and supplement alfalfa.

@iiHorseFreak : I like rice bran, it is good fiber and better than beet pulp in my opinion. Just regular old oats works good too, many say it will make a horse hot, but if a horse is working hard it is great food source. Rice bran comes in powder or pellet, I like pellet (less waste) and extra Vit E (Empower is good). Rolled oats a little better than whole oats since it digest better. Slow is best way, never put weight on fast and some alfalfa to supplement is OK not all the time.

@Andrea9514 : lots of people do this and I will sup a little, but alfalfa is a big cause of impaction colic, especially in the winter when horses drink less water. Giving rice bran helps stop impaction colic and put on weight, grass hay keeps horses warmer than alfalfa. Feeding more grass hay would be better but more work and either feeding 3 times a day or free choice, where the horse can eat all he wants and hay is available all the time so they can graze all day slowly.

Hi Rick, great video but I’m so confused now after seeing that you feed rye hay. We have been trying to educate ourselves on mixed Rye since it is so readily available in South Louisiana. Keep coming across so many vet and university papers saying it can be very harmful. Is it only a certain kind of Rye plant you feed to horses? Thanks!!
@ThinkLikeAHorse7 ай бұрын
Not sure, California used to sell a 3 Way Hay, Oat, rye & Alfalfa, it was great hay fed for years never had any problems. Also would by sq bales of Rye hay fed it, horses loved it, never had any problems. UCD (University of Davis) Vet College has great info since they are Large Animal Vet School, check out their website and you will probably find info

Re Above comment: I agree on the basis of your thoughts regarding it need to be about the horse,however there are exceptions to everything.IE. the only way we can keep proper weight on our drafts is with alfalfa. Also,as many as 1 in 10 horses have EPSM and cannot have grains or carbs, and the oats will hurt them. I'm glad Buddy is well cared for, and you certainly sound like you would go to extremes for his care, but not every horse is the same, and there are exceptions. SkinGripz 8 hours ago

@larasa007 : Yes too much rich feed can cause laminitis and founder. That is why when horses get lose and get into grain bags, they eat too much and many times founder or colic. Which is why all grain should be in horse proof containers. And why grass hay is best for horses.

What are your thought on haylage? In case you call it something different in the US its the moist rich fermented stuff that smells alcholic lol! They use it at the yard I work at and to be honest all it seems to do is make them shit more, and give them the runs!!!

Rick; so I own a paint mare, she is 17 she has been on alfalfa hay and senior grain, since i"ve owned her i've given her a mixture now of alfalfa and timothy hay i cut back on the alfalfa. I have heard that alfalfa has higher protein, i believe in feeding my horse 3x per day and keeping a hay bag with timothy for grazing. What do you recommend? I'd like to cut her energy down some as since i have changed her from 4 hefty flakes of alfalfa down to 3 smaller flakes of alfalfa; i don't want her to have a shock to the system so what do you think about 1 flake of alfalfa for breakfast, timothy for lunch then alfalfa for dinner and timothy again in the hay bag??? Thank you.
@dodie30536 жыл бұрын
I know I’m late but I’d recommend 1 flake of alfalfa and the rest is grass/Timothy grass
