Rick makes a lot of great points horses are like children they want direction and if they don't have clear direction their behavior reflects that.

Especially children adopted later in life from an orphanage who have had to feel like they can only survive on their own - they also have a "fight or flight" instinct.

No truer words have been said about horses. Really this video is about such a simple topic but can teach people who really listen about 90% of what they want to learn about horses.

Sadly, many people think they don't have anything to learn when it comes to being around their horses, many of whom have had horses all their life, and compete at a high level . One I met just said "I haven't got time for all that, I have 10 horses to ride every day" They need to watch this!

DK Dempcey Knight DK , I agree wholeheartedly. Both Tanner and Buddy are handsome horses. Mr. T is a prime example of a wild stallion (now gelding). A little more compact and well muscled; they are sure footed and strong in order to live in their wild environment.

Thanks for your videos. I am now married to the debt i may invest of owning a horse. haha. But all seriousness, I've grown up around horses, but now is my chance to really be a horse person with a mare my cousin gave me. I have been watching your tutorials on horse behavior (especially with ear pinning which she likes to do) and everything you are saying, I am now starting to understand what I'm doing WRONG with her. So I'll be tuning in quite often seeing as I'm on my own with her

I like this guys approach. Good stuff. I`ve had some butt head horses but later found out I was setting them up to act that way. Either you take the leadership position or they will. When you own a Clydesdale draft horse you definitely want the leadership spot. Great video.

@S0XF0X13 жыл бұрын
@Jamelith Well, it's important to know when a horse is most likely going to kick if you go behind it or not. If you own the horse, it's important that you teach him to NOT kick you when you go behind it, and to desensitize it because once you take ownership of that horse, everything he does is because of you. If your horse kicks out when people walk behind him, and you own that horse, then it's your fault because you didn't teach him to not do that. I'm not sure if this addresses your comment :P

+Think Like A Horse I'm having this problem with my leading with the horse that I'm leasing from time to time, but I don't really know how to get the things that I'm doing wrong to do it right. I've tried to step in front of her, and making her move back a few steps and there she just walks faster by me and cuts me off anyway and I don't really have any other ways to correct this and I suck at ground work btw or then she just thinks she's higher and I suck at correcting that (also I don't really understand how people make it look so easy, I'm from Finland and here I'm pretty sure only my friends know the term ground work). She also has this 'habbit' of just following people around and just going to their side and kinda cutting them off by pushing her side a bit in front of the person and stopping there, not turning to look at the person or anything. She's also a bit pushy sometimes (I just think she's being nice by letting me make her move and stuff and when she just is like hey I know there's hay a few steps forward let me just push past you and even tho I try so hard to just stay still and not give in and make her move a little back she just doesn't give two shits, I can just imagine what she's thinking at that moment) I'm sorry for the long story but could I get any tips? Btw love your videos and I've dreamed since I found your channel that one day I could get my own foal and train it the way you have trained your horses they are just amazing every time you handle them and your videos made me kinda anti-bit person so thanks for that also. Yeah Imma just stop this letter and hope you wanna waist your time reading it. Smokey is also super cute, yeah bye.

Coming here to leave a comment and to just go back to some old videos of yours. I always notice equestrians using the halter instead of their body. If the horse moves in front of them, they'll lose no time to start yankin'. A horse learns from release, and that sort of thing kind of finalized in my brain yesterday when I was thinking about the other people at my old barn who would slap horses. For one, the horses were put into corners of stalls where they couldn't escape if a person blocked their other side. One horse bites because it's saying "get out of my face," and in response it gets slapped. Was that release? No! Not at all. And for the scared folk out there, they'll probably back up (releasing pressure) when a horse goes to bite. Crazy how oblivious those barn people are, or I should say barn witches. (mainly womennnnnnn!) There are women older than me, and I'm 14, who still wont take the time to learn and take actual horsey advice that benefits the horse. You're right, Rick, people wont do something if it takes more time and effort, they always want the easy way out. I like your channel cause it gives me a place where I can rant n stuff without normal people crying in my face. I say normal because we're the crazy ones to them.
@harleybauer42108 жыл бұрын
Hey Rick , When My horse Charlie relaxes his back leg (alternating almost every 30 second) Is that normal? My other horse only rest one leg.

@ThinkLikeAHorse .....has there ever been a reported incident of a horse accidentally eating a plant's seed that has spikes on it? In this senario is it easy for the horse to remove the spike-ball off of his pricked tongue or should a human pull it out. (~How should I know, I don't eat wild grass lol. But I do know what those seeds feel like) Accidents happen.. {Plus: it there was a tinnie tiny cut on the horse's tongue should one leave it to heal on it's own since it's so minor, or consider putting oatment on it? In other words how sensitive are horses to infection.. when humans get a cut on their leg from soccer, it stings, but it won't cause a serious infection at all, ...of course not unless if you get mud on it, then micro-worms (parasites) would enter your body} :/
@xxareswarxx6207 жыл бұрын
Rania Z im no complety sure on the plants but if the plantshave spikes the horse is unlikely to eat it unless it has overgrown the Pasteur if its a minor cut to the toung i will say leave it alone. as for a cut to the feet or anything its hest to apply a bit of medecin to prevent infection cause remember we humans dont really deal with flies buzzing around a horse dose and mud on animals is acutlly helpful ive seen animals roll an injury in mud cause it keeps flies off. pretty much if its nothing serious leave it alone maybe apply a bit of medecin so it heals quicker

So how would you stop him from crossing in front of you and trying to turn you around? I had mine do this and I kept cutting off her driveline but each time I did she walked faster to get in front of me. Finally I let her off the lead and she took off like a bat out of hell...which taught her that she can do that an I will cut her loose but I didn't know what to do.
@jenniferindy66286 жыл бұрын
Nicole C For any step they take forward they shouldn't, make them take two backwards. And before leading a horse at all, teach horse to stay outta your space by backing them up as you face them...then you walk to the end of the lead line (without pulling... and they "stay put") if that makes sense.
@jenniferindy66286 жыл бұрын
