Hands down the most informative TOS video I’ve ever seen. Not only did I watch from start to finish, I need to go back and watch at least 3 more times to absorb it all. Not sure how this is not at the top of every TOS video search. Won’t be watching anything else for the next month except every video you have that I can find. Thank you 🙏🏻

Today is 6-29-2022. I just watched this video and found it very helpful. I have had TOS for a while, but until this video I did not how to customize the scans. I have been a TC-2000 user and I like TC-2000 because they have the sharpest and cleanest charts of anyone. However, from what I have learned in this video, I will cancel TC-2000 in favor of TOS. Thank you.

Wow … at first that’s all I could say, but those who follow me to your video deserve more than that. Somebody already said, “possibly the most valuable 90 minutes I’ve ever spent”. I started with thinkorswim three weeks ago and devoured everything I could find. Nothing compares to you (re: Sinead O’Connor). I’m 74 and worked a fairly high-level position in ‘big’ corporate America, in software development and User Experience design, so I know what’s good. Your video is so much more than good. Your organization, the content flow, your explanations, your tips, and your warnings have helped me tremendously. Anyone who doesn’t sit through your entire tutorial, AND extend their education on your website, shouldn’t be trading options - they should just sign up for a robo advisor or invest in index funds.

A few things I’ve learned about the ToS platform: Your scan column settings are only saved if you properly log out of ToS, or … you *SAVE* your workspace! (Learning that was priceless!) I’ve had a number of times where my ToS installation got corrupted (somehow). TD’s tech support solution is, almost always, *re-installing* ToS. Then when you bring it back up, you have a blank slate. None of your special settings, formats, etc. are saved. If you occasionally save your workspace, then if you have to reinstall it on your computer, or another computer, you can just reload the saved workspace. Also, the Flexible Grid of charts can be saved separately. As for scripts timing out, I also found out that that is a function of how busy the server is. A script/scan that works once may not work at another time, and vice versa. BTW, scan results are not only useful for alerts but also can be used for conditional orders. For example, if you use some scheme to determine Stop Loss orders, you can use them (with GREAT care) to enter or close out a trade. I use a “volatility stop” script rather than a conventional stop order. While that’s a third party scan that I obtained separately, you can also use a built-in function, like *_Parabolic SAR_* or write a condition like selling when price is above/below a certain moving average.
@Hahntech
@Hahntech Жыл бұрын
Thanks for providing that feedback. But let me issue a word of caution about saved workspaces: Be careful about trusting the "Saved Workspace". My experience has show that particular item being tied to a folder named "usergui" which is located in the Thinkorswim program folder. Which means a saved workspace is: 1. Stored locally on your device 2. NOT stored in the Thinkorswim servers where you might be able to retrieve it from another device 3. Is therefore deleted when you remove and reinstall Thinkorswim So make a copy of the folder named "usergui". Then test things out to make sure you have a way of restoring your saved workspaces after reinstalling Thinkorswim. For example by copying the "usergui" folder from the previous installation into the brand new installation. And the reason why this behaves this way is important. Between various devices you have many variables which could present serious issues if you tried to use a saved workspace on another device. Screen resolution is the number one concern. But this is especially true if you try to move a saved workspace from a PC with multiple monitors and load that onto a laptop with only one monitor.

@hahn Thank you for this! Would you happen to have created one for the Option Hacker?
@Hahntech
@Hahntech 2 жыл бұрын
No I have not. And I doubt that I will. In our Q&A Forum we have had numerous requests for scans based on options and none of them were able to be completed using the Option Hacker tool on Thinkorswim. One of the biggest failings is that the Study Filters can only "see" stock data. There is no way to write a custom script that reads data from the options market, because the Study Filter cannot access any of the options market data. Thinkorswim developers have a lot of work to do before the Options Hacker screen has any real utility.

Awesome info. I watched the whole thing, very good. I am having a big problem: my scans don't work after market hours and in the premarket. The prices of stocks don't change. I clicked the post-market box of studies filters. Can't get it to work. I changed the column from Last price to Mark and still nothing. Don't get it.
@Hahntech
@Hahntech 2 жыл бұрын
Yours is a very common misunderstanding. You do not have to use something other than the "close" to configure a scan to run during extended hours session. In thinkscript, "close" is always the current price for whatever time frame and sessions hours you have set on the Study Filter of a custom scan. I suggest you browse through existing solutions in our Q&A Forum where we have many examples of scans that run during extended hours. In our forum you can search for specific terms. The following link will show the search results. I searched for the term "premarket" in the Stock Scanners topic: www.hahn-tech.com/ans/cat/scans/?question_type=all&category=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hahn-tech.com%2Fans%2Fcat%2Fscans%2F&search=Premarket

Love your videos! Was wondering if there's anywhere I can learn the thinkscript language? There are some setups I am having difficulty conditioning. Although they are very basic and have to do with EMA, they are very technical. Also is there anyway one would be able to code specific EMA patterns say from like a pattern recognition bot into the thinkorswim platform?

"how often will the chart refresh"? I think you meant to say how often all the scan refresh? Scans on Thinkorswim run in the cloud and not locally on the user's computer. The lag time is measured in minutes, not seconds. A 10 second refresh rate is completely impossible for scans on Thinkorswim. You can manually run the scan by clicking the scan button every 10 seconds. But the majority of scans will take longer than 10 seconds to complete.

No, absolutely not. The issue is far beyond the range of any code we can write. It has to do with limitations within the platform itself. If your trading methodology requires 10 second refresh rate on entry signals you should not be using a retail trading platform like Thinkorswim. You require a platform built for institutional money managers. And if this was truly the case, you would not be watching videos on KZbin for the Thinkorswim platform. You may need reevaluate your trading methodology.

If you have the "Bid" and "Ask" columns included in the results section of your scan you can create an order by clicking the bid or the ask for the specific row you select. This is the same basic functionality which exists in other areas of the platform. And if you want to generate a Buy with stop or an OCO order you can just right-click the bid or the ask and select whichever order type you want to use. This does not require any custom script at all. It's just a standard feature of the platform.

the AUTOMATED Round trip trade is what i would like to trigger using the custom scan collum . yes or no .
@Hahntech
@Hahntech 11 ай бұрын
Technically, yes. But first you must understand how to create and save a conditional order. Once you save the conditional order you can then right-click the bid or ask in any area on the platform in which those columns are displayed. From the menu that pops up, you can then select the saved order template your previously saved. All of this is clearly demonstrated in the video I linked in my very first response. The only thing different is the location of the bid and ask column. In the video I linked in my first reply, the bid and ask columns are found on the Trade tab. But they are also found in many other places on the platform. Wherever the bid and ask columns are displayed on the platform, you can right-click, select a saved order template and initiate a new conditional order from that location. Trust me, this will all be much easier for you to understand if you just take the time to watch the video linked in my original reply. Which means I have nothing more to say on this topic.

What is the refresh rate on a dynamic scanner? And are all scans you create dynamic? If not how do I know if a scan is dynamic or static?
@Hahntech
@Hahntech 3 жыл бұрын
All scans are static until you do one of two things: 1. Save the scan and assign it as the source of a watchlist gadget. Refresh rate will be real time. 2. Save the scan and create a dynamic alert from it. The refresh rate is based on one of several settings that you adjust when creating the dynamic alert.
@kaneschoff2407
@kaneschoff2407 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hahntech That makes sense thank you. However, I am running into an issue where my watchlist is not updating with my scan. I am scanning for a 1min candle to cross above and close over the 200ema (I call this 1min EMA Break). When I refresh my scan I will see a list of 4-5 stocks but my watchlist (the same 1min EMA Break) does not populate. It has not populated at all today. It believe it is a dynamic watch list as I created it from the scan I created with the purple symbol next to it.
@kaneschoff2407
@kaneschoff2407 3 жыл бұрын
Also.. I just got word from TD Ameritrade that their scans refresh every 3-5 minutes. So scanning for something specific on the 1min candles may not work here. I believe the only way to accomplish this would be to set a custom alert for this at an individual chart level.
@Hahntech
@Hahntech 3 жыл бұрын
That is correct, and I even covered this in detail in this very video. Nobody should be trying to build any scans or custom watchlist columns using the 1 min time frame. Not on Thinkorswim. And many users of this platform mistakenly believe that using a 1 min time frame gives them the fastest results. That is also a falsehood and one that this video was specifically designed to clear up. The exactly opposite is usually the case. Always use the highest possible time frame in which your particular chart pattern can be read. I use a 1 hour time frame for my personal scan and I get real time notifications throughout the day using the 1 hour time frame. Scans and watchlist columns run on Thinkorswim servers. Which means you have several points in the process to introduce delays. This is the reason why there is a 3-5 minute delay when using these tools. If you require faster response time than this you will need to move to a platform that runs scans on your computer rather than the server. But then you must make sure that computer is always up and running and connected to the internet or the scans and alerts will complete stop working. Do you see the trade-off here? If you want the convenience of getting notifications without being logged into your platform, you have to put up with a delay. If you want to remove or minimize the delay you have to put up with having to remain logged in and connected during the entire trading session.

@Hahntech
@Hahntech Жыл бұрын
I have not published a video on patterns yet. Not sure I will ever get around to that though. Complex chart patterns are exceedingly challenging for any computer to recognize. My best suggestion is that you add the chart pattern to your chart. Then find the specific pattern you want it to pick up. Adjust the settings until your pattern is identified on your chart. Then use those settings for your scan. But keep in mind these patterns are exceptionally rare and you should still expect to wait several weeks or months before the scan picks up a current pattern you have specified.

@@Hahntech Well, you stressed a few times that TOS can do many things without writing a single line of code ;-) So in "Scan" there is a "Add Filter" > "Pattern" function. The same exact patterns can be added to any chart. Maybe you missed that from my previous reply. It was implied but not stated directly. So add this pattern to your chart and learn how to adjust the settings to identify the patterns you find on your chart. Once you get that working, apply those same settings to your scan.

What are the chances some NYSE stocks are also listed in NASDAQ. This is called "dual listing". It's a thing, be sure to look it up if you haven't already. Might not be anything wrong about this at all. I don't know, because it's does not impact me and I don't have time to chase down the details. So what you found may be completely accurate. But if you need to work with a fixed list of stocks you can build your own personal watchlist and use that as the top level filter instead of one of the built-in watchlists. You have total control here. But it may just take a bit more effort to get what you want.

The tool was designed so that you can include all condition groups to the same scan. You can have "All of the following", "Any of the following" and "None of the following" on the same custom scan. Start with something very basic, which you know will work, then gradually increase the complexity until you reach your desired goal.
