@nickage87 If you read past my first sentence, context clues would tell you that your statement that the linux edition costs hundreds of dollars more is false.
@Slysoft_3 жыл бұрын
@nickage87 The linux version is a user-customizable model so you can get whatever hardware you want, and it is consistently cheaper than comparable configuration due to the lack of windows license. And, the linux edition does come with 1 year of premier support. So yeah, everything you said is a lie.

Nice video. A couple of corrections from a technitian: 1) it has 4 speakers, just like the two precious generations. Two of the speakers are down-firing and two are facing up. Those grilles are for speakers. 2) the second m.2 slot is for optional WWAN 4G modem. I don't think it supports a second hard drive.

Hey Josh, great review as usual. Just a note on the side: When reviewing a laptop for professionals or for people who care about long term use, it would make sense to also mention servicability. Over the years I had many laptops from different brands, but I always go back to lenovo (thinkpads,) because they have very widely spread partners who are qualified and certified to provide service for their laptops, and replacement parts are usually easily available and affordable even many years after you bought your laptop. I know plenty of people who still use thinkpads older than 5+ years because of that. Just replace the battery, replace the keyboard if excessively used, upgrade the ram and you can use it for another couple of years (sadly ram upgradability became rare with thinkpads). But I think it's a legitimate point, when I made the experience that other manufacturers try to force you to buy a new laptop, when you have some sort of a problem with your current one.

Josh, totally agree with your assessment. The X1 Carbon is my favorite all around Windows laptop. They got so many things right with this one making it a great all around laptop. Sorry the reduced the keyboard travel...I hope Lenovo doesn't forget what makes their laptops the favorite of many. Looking forward to your review with the 500nit screen version...hope it is a Matte display also. I absolutely HATE glossy screens...can't see myself ever going back to glossy screens. I've already got enough mirrors around my house..don't need another one on my laptop. I'm jussayin.... The X1 Carbon is expensive but Lenovo typically runs aggressive sales periodically (particularly in late summer and fall) on the X1 Carbon series.

Great review, Josh! Was curious about the 9th Gen, since I have the 7th Gen X1 Carbon - i7 (not vPro), 16 RAM, & 512 SSD. You're right, def recommended (price was much higher in 2019). It's been super smooth & very reliable over the 1.5 years I've owned it (& 1 year I used it to work from home until I was sent a work laptop). Best thing is how light it is and easy to carry around. Hoping the next gen upgrades to a 1080p webcam.

@kevinwang45273 жыл бұрын
Here is a different perspective from a current computer science and mathematics student. I can’t comment on the 9th Gen, but I do currently have the 8th Gen (i7-10710u 16GB+512SSD) and the XPS 13 9310(i7 1165G7 16GB+512SSD). Firstly, the advantages of the ThinkPad are its superior keyboard, slightly lighter weight and wider selection of ports. The Dell on the other hand has a superior and brighter screen, smaller size, sturdier build, far better speakers and a modern design. The keyboard may need some getting used to on the Dell as it has a shallower key travel but its great once you get used to it. Now my main issue with the X1 Carbon is its design and build quality the bottom screen panel is unreinforced and the screen bezel is just a sticker therefore any accidental force applied to the bottom panel can result in a cracked screen which unfortunately did happen to me. Lenovo’s customer service was terrible can couldn’t direct me to my nearest repair center so decided to repair the thing myself hence why I bought the XPS 13 as a replacement as I was in need to finish my assignment ASAP. My X1 also has an issue where the bottom right palm rest makes annoying click sound every time you rest your hands on it this is poor quality control. I often find myself having to crank the brightness all the way up on the Lenovo while I only needed to use 60% screen brightness on the XPS. The Lenovo also has a panel lottery problem(Lenovo's Panel Lottery continues with 3 different 14-inch LowPower displays - NotebookCheck.net News)My usual University work involves some Java, R and LaTeX both devices can handle it just fine thermal throttling is not an issue on the Dell in my real-world use or benchmarks as Josh seems to face this issue. The battery life on the X1 would probably edge out by an hour maximum depending on the usage although the fans do tend to kick in more often on the X1. On geek bench I managed 1193/4931 on the X1 and on the XPS 1503/5272 (Single-Core/Multi-Core). Cinebench R23 the Dell edges out again with 3752 compared to 3618 on the X1 bear in mind its Quad Core vs Hexa-Core. I have no known quality control issues on my XPS 13, but I would note that the early release drivers were a bit unstable but since the device has been out for a good 4-5months now this issue has been resolved. After extensive use of both laptops I would say I would hands down go for the Dell if you were a student in most scenarios if both devices were at MSRP both were around $1800.

It's a shame that almost no reviewer on the internet actually knows the real beauty of thinkpads, the incredible red dot in the center! I highly recommend trying it out, you'll almost never need a mouse unless you want to play games. As with almost everyone, I initially ignored this beauty, but once I got used to it, navigating and scrolling on my laptop has never been the same. The trackpad on thinkpads are not as good as macbook's, but I almost never used the trackpad once I got used to the red dot.
