I have the X1 Carbon and running 2 x 27inch external monitors in extended mode, sound bar, wireless keyboard and mouse all connected via a hub and one cable to laptop. Could not be happier with this setup giving awesome computing power and 3 screens to work with. Suprememly satisfied with my Carbon.

This review was right up my alley. I am in love with my ThinkPad keyboard and I can't get my hands on HP Spectre x360 14 here in Canada. The nuance in the laptop game right now is overwhelming and I appreciate reviews like this that help distill things for me a bit. I'm going with the X1 yoga gen 6. A little nervous about battery life, but love the combination of performance, flexibility, and size.

Thanks for the comparisons. I have been a ThinkPad Yoga user for a few years now and love the build quality, weight and feel. I find that it has really quit good battery life. I have caught myself out on the road working and the back at a hotel streaming for a couple of hours, falling asleep and then waking up a couple of hours later with it is still running/streaming, shutting it down and the waking up in the morning, booting it up and find that it still has 40% battery left. Speed is great and the heat has not been a distraction but maybe I am used to it.

Beware the titanium trackpad uses very new technology from Sensel which has a steep learning curve. Not only is thr trackpad based on their Morph product's "resistive"-like (but much more precise than capacitive) sensors, but it also doesn't really click - it has haptics akin to the Magic Trackpad on Macs which uses sound speaker coils to provide both vibration and sound. I would highly appreciate a thorough review of this laptop with this detail in mind, because everyone who is reviewing these (except Linus Tech Tips for some reason) is ignoring this tiny, but very important detail

@@mini9503 but they also failed to acknowledge the new tech which leads me to believe Lenovo isn't even notifying reviewers about it. I think the company excels on pushing input mechanism that nobody uses out of just neglecting it (oh wait, we also have the track point...), but that may actually be great when given enough attention. Reminds me of my 9yo child who is too accustomed to touchscreens and track pads and now that I set their desk uo with keyboard, mouse and even monitor, they keep using the integrated keyboard, trackpad and monitor!

Excellent review!!!! This really helps me making a decision between the X1s, Props to you sir. 10:14 The battery life is much worse in the X1 Yoga Gen 6 because it has the 4K+ screen. The results you got seem very reasonable. That being said I'm still thinking I'm going to get the X1 Yoga with the 4K+ screen because it is just such a nice screen.
@nafnaf0
@nafnaf0 2 жыл бұрын
I ended up going the the X1 Yoga Gen 6 with the 4K screen. I'd say overall I am very happy with it. The 4K+ screen is truly gorgeous, I fully calibrated it for photo editing and prints. It is simply the best screen I have ever used. The beautiful screen does come at a cost though, battery life is not that good, I end up getting about 3.5hours of usable life, even less if doing heavier tasks. Also the 4K+ display can tax the GPU and cooling causing the laptop to get fairly hot overall. Also of note, the keyboard is not as good as previous Lenovo ThinkPad laptops (X1 Yoga Gen 1, T420S) that I have owned, but still a step up from the HP I have for work or my old Dell Inpriron. I swapped out the M.2 SSD with a 2TB WD Black PCIe 4.0, and it is just crazy fast. Super easy to swap out, it is a total no brainier, the 2TB WD Black PCIe 4.0 SSD can be found on Amazon for about $300.

@@nafnaf0 Thank you for this update, it puts things into perspective, I'm between the carbon due to its lightweight (I travel a lot), and the yoga because of the 2 in 1, though I have a zenbook right now and I barely use the touch screen, or the pen in my galaxy note, but I feel safe to have them just in case lol. Question: How heavy does the yoga feel if you tag it along your daily activities?

I've never seen it any less expensive. I do believe something was wrong with Josh's X1 Yoga regarding battery life. 10 hours is the norm for running Netflix on a constant basis. I used Thinkpad T470 for a bit longer than 3 years before getting a X1 Gen 3 Extreme about 5 months ago. It is true that the latter's keyboard felt incredibly shallow when I first typed on it, compared to the T470's counterpart. However, as time progressed, the X1's keyboard started to feel familiar to my touch despite its shallowness. So I think it is worth giving the X1's keyboard some time before getting used to it - although it is surely not as satisfying as that of T470. Thanks for the video.

That is a good question. I think the matte 1200x1920 screen would be a pretty good option and will give much better battery life than the 4K+ screen. The 4K+ screen will be better though, it has much higher color gamut and has generally been regarded by multiple reviewer’s is simply outstanding. I think either would be a good choice, I’m personally went with the 4K+ since I use it for photo editing and printing.

Using Yoga Gen 6 (1920x1200 resolution, ~400 nits, very rare display in modern PCs: it's matte and touch). Excellent machine with good keyboard and touch screen, expect 7-8 hours of battery life. Do not forget to upgrade bios to at least version 1.24 (there are some problems with heating on older ones). X1 Nano and Titanium Yoga lacks ports unfortunately, so, I don't even want to compare them. So choose: Carbon Gen 6 (if you do not need touch screen) or Yoga Gen 6. Both incredible machines.

I may be a biased Aussie here, but I just love listening to your videos! Keep being brutally honest, it's a breath of fresh air from all those sugar-coated reviews (I've lost hours of my life I cannot get back). I'm just sick and tired of KZbinrs plugging rubbish, ok? 😭 Any advice on good content creator laptops? I'm trying to find a laptop that'll suit video editing and not burn a hole in my lap. I'm not looking for something to replace my desktop but I need a portable solution for making some quick edits and connecting to my camera for stop-motion (can't exactly drag around a desktop). Heard good things about the Macs, but they're expensive and I've had so many issues with them in the past regarding storage and applications. Ideally has: • Good graphics • Great colour gamut (very important). • Low heat (I expect a little from a creator laptop, but I'd like it to not burn the flesh off my bones, thank you). • Less fan noise, but I'm not too picky. • Good Keyboard (I'm a writer and bad keyboards are the bane of my existence). • Within my budget of $1,000--$2,000AUD. Basically a midrange laptop. • And lastly, available in my country *cries in Australian*. I know I probably won't be able to get all these things in a laptop, I just need something I can work with. I keep looking at these high-end laptops and I just don't feel like wasting a fortune on something that's only a "little better". It doesn't have to be spectacular, just has to do the job. I don't want another laptop that's going to conk out on me😭

Great video! I just couldn't decide, what to buy among these 4 laptops.

The most common place to use a PC is from home where it’s easy to have a PC cooler under the PC… tests should take this common solution into account… if a cooler helps of not on these high power PCs is useful to know and can help buying decisions in many cases.

Extremely helpful comparison, especially that I have always found Lenovo's line-up just way too confusing.

Great overview again, thanks Josh. I was considering the Carbon for coding but it’s off the list. I’m so tempted to get the Nano and if I could stick more memory in the darn thing I’d probably deal with the slightly less performance and go with this unit but as with all of them having soldered ram or not being able to get to at least 32gb on the board sucks eggs. I’ve had my eye on another laptop from a smaller manufacturer that’s been crushed by the shortages in the chip, etc supply chain so I thought I’d re-look at the Lenovos. You saved me some buyers remorse, oh and some $. I’ll wait on the laptop (with Linux installed) I really want which I think will be a Carbon killer in pretty much every respect. Cheers.

@@PedroLopez-hb4ev Lemur Pro from System76 was the laptop I was referencing. I bought one. I love it but I found I needed more fully remote power including off net use so I eventually picked up a M1 14". Though I still have the Lemur and think it's a great laptop for most Linux based devs. Cheers.

Josh a long term admirer of your in-depth reviews.. I'm in a flip flop on what I should buy for my med school that will need note taking and massive studying from the screen.. The default choice of med students is iPad Pro 12.9 (I guess 512Gb with 8 Gb Ram is sweet spot for this).. But I hate the ransom and sheep mentality that Apple propagates.. Especially with these really light weight Windows 2in1s now available.. When I'm gonna use One Note (and not get ransomed into the locked into Apple Notability), it makes better sense to buy a 2in1 (though pull off tablet of ipad pro is more convenient, but top of the line 2in1s are almost as light as just the tablet of ipad).. Now the 2in1 battle.. Lenovo Titatnium performs lesser as you say vis a vis other lenovo, but is cooler and that's more important for my work flow.. Also they have a killer deal making them the cheapest CAD 1727/- for i7 i7-1160G7 and CAD 1842 for i7-1180G7 (another mini question.. Will buying the extra just CAD 110 for the 1180G7 be a better choice than 1160 G7).. Ok getting out of the Lenovo ecosysytem (that I don't like coz it's Chinese).. The other alternative is HP Spectre X360 (default choice for those with my anti Apple folks) which is selling at a good discount at CAD 1850 on bestbuy.. and another thing that pulled my attention was Asus Zenbook FlipS with the oled also selling around CAD 1800.. Or should I just convert and buy ipad pro.. I'm a pixel user BTW.. Or give me other choices you like better.. Samsung (less specced than Asus, Spectre, and titanium), XPS 13 2in1(again less specced).. Please help.. I'm ready to pay you for your answer!!

Great video breakdown. I’d rather the M1 MBA, but it’s good to see what else is out there on the market. The cheap Lenovo I had from my company seemed to do the job for what I needed it to do.
