VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
On the 8th of June 2022, the Reserve Bank of India officially allowed users to link their credit cards to all UPI platforms. This means within some days if you if own a Rupay credit card and a mobile phone you could make your credit card transactions through your UPI app without using your credit card at all!! And as soon as this announcement happened, it became such a sensation that every single news channel and every single newspaper lauded the NPCI about how revolutionary this move is!!
and this move is so big that on one hand, it could redefine the entire credit market of India on the other side, it is a big threat to even Giant companies like VISA and Master card
The question is?
Why is the UPI linking the Credit card system such a revolution for the people of India?
How will it change the lives of people like you me and the 1000s of small businesses all across the country?
and most importantly, why is it yet another lethal threat to Giant companies like Visa and Master card!

U missed one imp thing... By breaking vsa and mastercard backbone we are removing our dependency on the 2 American companies.. Hence if tomorrow America decides to shut down visa and mastercard services in India as a part of sanctions it will have minimal effect on India... KZbin is helping me from India and u from America to exchange each other's opinions and understand one another's perspective but when youtube tries to block certain comments or videos that do not fit their agenda without providing any satisfactory explanation, there KZbin is controlling the narrative and preventing one point of view to be presented.. @@somnath1235 I actually agree with you, globalization has done some really good things. But one of the big issues of globalization is that it leaves poorer nations that need constant importing really vulnerable. The importing nation needs to agree to exporting nations terms and conditions of trading. Perhaps the exporting nation collapses, it would leave the importing nation in a sticky situation. But like what you said it has brought very good things such as communication such as right now which reminds me, the discoverer of wireless communication was Indian "Jagadish Chandra Bose" which was later developed by an Italian named Guglielmo Marconi and through countries opening them selves up to the world for the pass 100 years it has helped advance all forms of communication. Without globalization I would have never been able to hear about this youtube channel. It has its cons and most definitely has its pros.

This video leaves out a very critical aspect of Credit card business The major chunk of revenues for Credit Cards is the revolver customers who pay interest on their credit card purchases. MDR and annual fee are small proportion of pie Why did govt start Rupay card network when Visa, MasterCard were already there? Because with 3% MDR rate, the bottom 90% of Indians wont be served...at such high transaction costs. Yes merchants/businesses pay this 3% charge..but who are they ultimately going to charge this from? Lower MDR is win for Indian consumer When Rupay can operate at lower MDR rates, why not the foreign card networks do it at a lower price? Especially when economies of scale keep on growing?

Terrific. Beautiful explanation .. UPI itself is a game-changer. Now linking it to a Credit card is simply a blast .. A small MDR % of say 0.05% or even less will go a long way .. For a transaction of Rs 100, -- nobody will bother to pay an MDR of Rs 0.1 ( 10 Paise). This can be slowly increased to say 0. 5% in due course ( like what they did on Security transaction TAx STT ).. But this is a game changer -- thanks to NPCI == Major risk factor is govt change .. before that NPCI has to be totally Privatized like ICICI bank ( which was initially Govt owned )

Indian banks and RuPay could come up with some limits on credit card transactions which could be insured. Or the merchants should provide more incentives with debit card payments instead of credit card payments. One has to be rich to have a credit card and a vast majority of people using credit cards already have sufficient balance to use a debit card instead. Most use credit cards just for fun and to show off or use it while traveling abroad.

The amount spent on Credit card can also be linked to E-commerce offer, where in I can shop for thousands and pay in emi. Doing same on Debit card would be less preferred . Also Credit cards gives more time to pay for a transaction, instead of paying today, i can pay 30 days later. so that might be the reason why people would prefer spending more in credit rather than debit. They need to take MDR from paying customer who is paying through UPI via credit card. This way the rich class won't mind for paying a service charge and the small businesses won't incur any losses and Govt won't have to take a burden.

Fantastic collation of facts & equally well made video. Another disruption that can happen with zero MDR on credit cards is that Indians may no longer have credit cards which work internationally. It's really a fine balancing game for the finance ministry.

We have a business and are charged 2% for using card payment by the processing company. The amount paid to the processor company was getting ridiculous when calculated every month. Over the past few months, we started asking the customer to pay the additional 2% which encouraged them to pay using UPI. Now we hardly use card payment once a day. UPI is an amazing payment method 👍

I remember UPA government introduce the rupay debit cards avoid chergs from other countries cards like Visa Mastercard etc in that time banks replace the cards with rupay debit cards.. after 2014 govt changed.. Rupay debit cards replaced with Visa Mastercard cards...in earlier days if we needs ATM card go to the bank pay 250 rupees apply for card.. now banks directly send Visa Mastercard ATM cards without our permission and amount debited from account automatically.... What's your opinion on it

Credit card users will never switch to UPI willingly.. Reason: Reward points.. And Rupay Credit Card doesn't give rewards.. and if they do.. those rewards are way too less as compared to visa and Mastercard.. And Users are the one to decide which card they wanna use to pay.. that is the Exact reason AMEX is still such a huge player even with having significantly higher MDR than visa and mastercard from merchants.

It is very interesting to see many videos saying UPI is free while not talking about hidden taxes in place of MDR. Remember all merchant transactions still have some type of GST associated with them some as high as 18%. Since merchants for larger stores cannot assume VISA/MC cards won't come from tourists, in order to keep things even, they add the MDR costs of all card services to the base price ahead of time. So when we say 0% MDR due to RuPay or UPI, that saving of 2-3% actually goes to the merchant as extra income. In any case, customer is paying the MDR out of their pocket whether the payment platform is UPI or VISA/MC network.

Hi, thank you for this intuitive video. I have a few questions/statements which I believe credit analysts, financial analysts and economists might be able to understand well, but likewise I'd welcome any clarification in this regard. First and foremost, I'd like to appreciate the benefits of UPI, even before I started studying the markets, and during my college years, UPI has definitely helped me a ton. And therefore this new "expansive monetary policy" by the CBI is more than welcomed. My questions are as follows: 1) We understand that any debit card transaction has minimal counterparty risk, that is once a payment has been made, payment processing facilities may have some risk associated with them but for the most part they are risk neutral. Contrasting this to credit card payments, there is substantial counterparty risk hence credit risk associated with every transaction, which for this questions sake is assumed to be assessed thoroughly by the banks and credit card companies (which isn't always the case). This expansive policy of integrating UPI with credit cards in my belief would increase credit consumption in the economy which in turn would affect inflation/price levels in the economy, which would further exacerbate the inflationary environment that we're in. Moreover it would drive the central bank to increase the nominal interest rate even further thus increasing the rate of return on debt (i.e. creditors would like to be compensated more and more for increasing credit risk). Thus I believe that interest on credit cards and other debt instruments will increase, thus increasing our cost of debt. 2) To facilitate 0 MDR rates for the entire economy would mean that CBI would have to compensate issuing companies and payment facilitators for their lost fees. The CBI can do this in two ways, they can sell Forex reserves and buyback INR to push interest rates upwards (normally done in fixed/pegged currencies) or increase interest rates to compensate for lost MDR. Whereas the government on the fiscal side can either (a) Use tax payer money to compensate these institutions or (b) Issue debt (government debt), the proceeds from which they can use to compensate these institutions. My only concern is, all of these moves would increase capital flow in to the country, making our currency riskier (thus attracting investments) which would drive up asset prices and further put upwards inflationary pressure on the economy. 3) I may not have empirical studies on this next one, but by looking at the increasing trade deficit, it is safe to say that imports exceed exports. If the UPI-credit card solution is to promote the GDP (upwards) that would mean making our citizens purchase domestically rather than importing from foreign countries. But alas, the saying is true that when people get money, they spend it, they would increase their standard of living which would increase imports. Thus furthering the trade deficit that we have. What are your thoughts about this? I am focussing on inflation and trade deficits mainly due to what has happened with the Sri Lankan economy and Greece with massive debt crisis, and inflation has been the thorn in everybody's shoe lately, globall speaking that is. Additionally, most stock market crashes and financial and currency crisis happen due to credit related risks. So on that note, I hope that the CBI can live up to it's reputation and mandates. Thank you for reading through this. I'm surprised I've found this channel recently, awesome work all around.

Razorpay is the payment gateway between two parties who is making it possible for the consumer and service provider to make a successful transaction. And if there won't be Razorpay then banks have to use their own Gateway to authorize (also maintain record) the transaction.
