Watching videos like this is very humbling. Many times while trying to compose music I think "Oh the top artists do so well and my ideas fall through" but seeing you make mistakes and correct them, or go a different route that leads to something better is awe inspiring and confidence boosting. A lot of times we forget that its okay to make mistakes, because through those failures we find success.

I still have nightmares from time to time about playing a piece for the Clarinet that went without breathing. When parts were in unison myself and a couple of the other clarinetists would secretly mark out the notes each of us would skip to breathe so we didn't drop out of the score completely at the same time.

Not sure if it was a Guy quote on another video or someone else - but I remember the hint of "when playing wind instruments on a keyboard, take a deep breath and slowly blow all the air from your lungs and then release the note". A good wind player will be able to blow longer/harder than us non-players but it means we're not playing things beyond what a good player can actually play!

So many streamers are styled to imperfection, so their jams and sessions are so nailed they may as well be a pre-recorded piece. What you give here is some true honesty! "Ah... Just a little tip (which I need to double-check in Discover - works in Pro) for anyone with Discover that’s concerned with track count if they double articulations, you should be able to Shift-Click both articulations (long + short) in a single instance to add, say, attacks to trombone longs.

@@LeeGee Lol. This was just on a whim that I tried it. I wanted a stronger, “tongued” attack. Normally, I would double the track with a separate articulation or in Kontakt, load both articulations. Suggestion for a course that I would like to see: String arrangement and production for pop and rock music. I think there could be a lot of guys like me who like orchestral elements, but don’t intend to become a media composer or do full orchestral scoring. I mostly do singer-songwriter stuff myself and have tried doing a string arrangement to a song once, but without prior knowledge it was a pita and took ages. So a short course on how to arrange strings in a song context , how to make them halfway decent with MIDI and mix them would be great. I’d buy that immediately. And if that works out, why not continue with brass for funk/soul or woodwinds for , eh, folk? As far as I can see that is a niche in the market that hasn’t been occupied, at least I haven’t found anything. Most orchestral course are overkill for me.

Being in the same boat as you, (I produce mostly singer/songwriter etc) I would definitely find some value in a course like that! But in the meantime try using the same techniques but applied to the more conventional chord progressions of pop music. And maybe lean a bit less on some of the more orchestral elements. Perhaps trying Mellotron strings in place of ‘real’ ones, and glocks/Rhodes/synth plucks in place of some more percussive orchestra sounds.

Wow! Great vid. Opened my eyes to a form of composition, I have always been curious about. I make EDM, but I think some of these techniques can be applied to making more interesting floor bangers.

There's probably a registry key somewhere it added when you install it (assuming it comes with an installer) that keeps track of when you started using it that you could try to find and modify use it longer while you try to figure out whether or not you want to pay for it or not, probably not the most legal but definitely pragmatic especially if you dont have much time to use it during the initial waiting period :)

Just had someone random sitting with me who had no interest in composing but was mesmerized by and laughing with Mr Guy Michelmore. Also got her finding interest in the composing aspect. I've not seen anything similar. I don't know if it is true but to her it was like "This must be a professional teacher" which he obviously is. I just don't know the history. Fun and inspirational. I'm waiting my two weeks. :) If I got really good and wanted to show other people outside of my closest then there might be something about going larger.

I can't express how inspiring your videos are to me. It's not just watching how you do things right, although that's highly instructive. It's also seeing you make mistakes, and how you go about fixing them. I love your playful spirit, and the fearlessness with which you cast off the sunglasses of doubt and come up with something amazing in such a short time. You make it look effortless, which anyone who's ever put two notes together knows it's not. Watching your videos is like sitting next to a world-class composer who also happens to be a good friend. Thanks and please keep doing what you do. :)
