Thinset Removal / Concrete Grinding / Oneida Dust Deputy / 6 hp Rigid Shop Vac
In this video, I demonstrate how the combination of both the 6 hp Rigid Shop Vac and the Oneida Dust Deputy reduces the dust during thinset removal and concrete grinding. Removing thinset can be a pain if you don't have the right tools. I find that grinding it is the best way. Because of how fine the dust is when grinding concrete, the use of a bag in the shop vac is recommended. Even though I use the Dust Deputy, the ultra fine dust still gets through to the shop vac, thus the use of the bag to save me time from cleaning the filter on the shop vac. I would not say that this method is dustless, but just less dust. About 95% dust free.

I restore concrete, whether it's staining, epoxy or overlays. So I definitely grind my fair share of concrete. The current dust collection systems I'm using are priced extremely high compared to what you showed & shared!! This is BRILLIANT!! No BRAINER...to know that I can use I decent sized shop vac and grind the concrete, while collecting the silica as you did. Thank You so much! God Bless

smart man, bags 3 layer blue filter and the dust deputy, i use the same set up for drywall dust, the only difference is that i use the muffler to tame the backblast of air coming out the back of my ridgid wd1451

Is a muffler the same as attaching additional hose to the blower port on back of vacuum and dangling it out of a window, in an attempt to minimize escaping fine particulate leak?

This is the system Im going to try. I just ordered my dust deputy yesterday and stubbled on this video Im happy to see it works well. I have used the bags before but last time I had an issue with the bags popping. However the more I think about it my makita 7" grinder uses the smaller 1.25" hose so im thinking that it might be putting a bigger load on the vac. I really like the 2" hose on that dust shroud you have. Its hard to find one with a 2" port. Did you add some weather stripping on the metal can to seal it up better? You might have addressed that but I had to watch with no sound.

Just mist the floor with water and you don't need any of that equipment. Just the grinder.

And then with certain applications you cannot apply your products to the floor. I use a 32" grinder with industrial vacuums as we use products that cannot have high moisture levels in the floor. It would have to dry out for days.

What mfg. of dust shroud did u use in the vid on ur 7" Milwaukee grinder? It seems 2 work well.
@frantickfpv9784
@frantickfpv9784 5 жыл бұрын
It's the stock shroud that comes with the grinder. It really depends on how well your vacuum setup is and how flat the ground is that is going to determine how much dust will escape. I notice on very unlevel floors that it will tend to spit out dust because there will be a gap inbetween the shroud and floor and also when the vacuum filter starts to get clogged up.

The flange helps to keep the dust from flying all over the place. Also do not tilt the grinder or it will spit out a lot more dust.

Jason Seignoret Hey wussup Jason, No I am not running a Hepa on the shop vac, just a higher quality filter than the standard. And the dust does not cake or stick to the filter like the standard filters. And as for the vacuum bag, I have yet to find anyone who sells the higher quality bags here in Hawaii. I have seen them online and will be ordering some soon. I also saw a bag that is reusable with a zipper. Looking to get my hands on one of those and have not seen them on ebay or amazon but found them on a site I never seen before and felt kind of iffy buying from them. Have you ever heard of or seen those bags?
@kimotee
@kimotee 9 жыл бұрын
XXXSANDMAN I run the same vac you do, and switch filters to HEPA for concrete/cutback grinding. Ridgid branded bags are available at Home Depot here on Oahu in either the Iwilei or Pearl City store, but check carefully. More often the "universal" bags are on the shelf. Just order from Amazon, if not available. With the DD, you don't use many bags.

kimotee So I ended up doing 1500 square feet of tile/thinkset removal in my house while I was still living there. Didn't put any plastic up and there was zero dust. This also wasn't the easy thinset to remove, it was the white polymer modified strong stuff. The tiles had 100% coverage and were stuck down good. I used two 6.5 HP shop vacs run in parallel with my dust deputy. I use the hepa filter in each shop vac and the yellow fine dust bags in each vac. I use the dewalt hammer dust extraction while chipping up the tile and the majority of the thinset. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007X2AUHG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This probably isn't necessary, a helper holding the shop vac close to where you are chipping would work just as good, if not better, but when you are doing it by your self its pretty handy. Also one shop vac works pretty decent on this. So often I would use one shop vac on the chipping hammer and have another helper just use the other in hand to move with me. After the floor is mostly up I use the dewalt 7" grinder dust shroud on my 7" grinder and a cheap diamond grinding wheel. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C66MX3S/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is really where you need the two shop vacs in parallel. One just does not move enough air to catch all the dust. But when you have the two connected it pulls so hard that dust shroud sticks to the floor. Not a bit of dust escaped the system and I didn't even have to dust the house afterwards.

That's a nice setup. I thought about using two shop vacs but I don't have the room in my truck to carry two of them. But I upgraded my dust bag and filter in my shop vac. I use the hepa filter from Ridgid and the Wunderbag from Dustless Technoligies. I ordered them from amazon and just got them and will be doing a review on them soon. I used the wunderbag and noticed a big difference. The rigid and universal bags always leaked a little bit from where it connects on the shop vac. And when I used the wunderbag, it didn't leak. I also like the wunderbag because it's not paper material like the rigid and universal bags. It's more cloth like and is much more durable. I always had problems with the bags ripping or tearing.
