I honestly think this film is a bit underrated. I mean, yes, it has flaws (what movie doesn't?) but I still think it's good. Personally, I would love a prequel. Where they show the backstories/capture of the other ghosts, ending when they arrive in the junk yard.

A huge problem this movie faced is that it released in the same time window as a tonne of other absolutely amazing films so it got overlooked. Also horror movies often get instantly panned by a lot of people. Personally I'm not a huge lover of horror films, probably only watch 2 or 3 a year, but I really liked thirteen ghosts and honestly with the back story to each ghost it goes beyond what a lot of films do.

Backstories are written for color and to give the actors incite into the characters they are playing. Notice how the Hammer doesn't try to attack Maggie but attacks Shaggie every time. It's because he was killed by white people and shaggy is white. The Ghosts are living up to their backstories throughout the film.

People forgot about? Which people? Speak for yourself! Dark Castle was releasing great horror flicks left and right back then, and my friends and I looked forward to every single one of them! It felt like a sudden, modern rebirth of horror cinema, using all the technology they had available to them at the time - and it was so refreshing after the crappy horror parody genre had finally exhausted itself 10X over. This movie is so methodical, psychological and delves deep into the human psyche. Each of the ghosts embody human flaws. Admittedly, this would make a phenomenal tv show and it should start with the recruitment of Dennis. Plus going back to the stories of the ghosts before this stuff happens. 50 min episodes of about 40 eps. Kinda a Penny Dreadful/American Horror Story kinda deal
@bagner57 жыл бұрын
the best thing about this movie was Dennis´ commentary on everything scary i mean he litterary flips off a ghost after it scares him XD

I really liked this movie. The ghosts are really creative, the backstories are really clever (sadly teh movie didn't use them) and honestly the shifting glass house and opening cages where a great way of keeping the threats increasing and changing. Plus, for whatever reason, I was constantly on edge watching the movie, which is fucking GREAT for a horror movie! In regarding the ending, some people, such as myself, believe the ghosts have actually moved on. While all they knew was pain and suffering in death, the imprisonment, plus the act of basically turning Cyrus into Cyrus cuts, earned them a meeting with Saint Peter.
@seafoxx7778 жыл бұрын
Embarrassingly enough, this is my favorite movie. I'm happy to see such a thorough review on it. Especially since you noticed the few things that were added in that literally no one else notices (foreshadowing, subtle hints, etc). There are a lot of those type of things in this film. My favorite is with the angry princess' character (who, according to her back story, is also an abuse victim who suffered from mental illness): in the scene with Kathy, she is incredibly anxious and you can hear her say things such as 'why is she doing that?', 'stop!'. When she is fed up with Kathy infringing on her space, she goes to attack her, but stops the second Arthur comes in, yelling. I'd like to think she stopped because abuse victims often are bothered by loud screaming. Especially past victims of domestic abuse. You can also see her character has anxiety towards the end of the film- she pretty much hides behind the other ghosts when they throw Cyrus and she is seen walking by herself and away from everyone else when the ghosts are freed. Another cool example of little things like this is when Maggie looks at the hammer. In the hammer's backstory, it is hinted that he was a victim of severe racial hate. He does not show any anger or violence towards Maggie, a black woman. In fact, most of the ghosts are only violent towards Dennis, or people with him. (With the exception of the jackal, who's just a freaking nutjob). When Dennis and Maggie encounter the angry princess, you can hear her say 'is that them?' (you have to listen very heard to hear her voice, but she does talk, a lot of the ghosts do). I feel like someone worked very hard on the ghosts and their backstory/personalities but they have received zero credit.

Showing visions is the laziest form of foreshadowing. There's nothing clever about it. Good foreshadowing works in a more symbolic or metaphoric way and doesn't actually show upcoming scenes (which is even pretty lazy from an artistic standpoint, because they were inserting exactly the same scenes in the vision we see later in the movie). In a nutshell: I don't use this phrase very often, but this surely was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The flashy editing made me cover my eyes several times to avoid puking. Also I needed to use the remote more than usual during the movie to turn down the volume of all those annoyingly loud noises. Greetings from Germany! :)

I agree. It's a terribly flawed movie but it was quite the spectacle. Because so few ghosts get backstories in the movie, it made them more intriguing. I felt that some of the ghosts weren't dangerous (the boy and the Torso just seemed to get off scaring the shit out of people). And Matthew Lillard is both the most overrated (early in his career) and underrated (later in his career) actor.

I always thought the Jackal was female until I read up on all of their backstories. Also I never realized the Jackal "fled" when they threw a flare at it because of the fire in his backstory, thought it just had to do with ghost being encrypted or whatever like the walls. Also my theory with the Juggernaut's three names was them having three different ideas and still being able to incorporate the other two.
@nealmccorkle36815 жыл бұрын
with the juggernaut's 3 names the difference is not as extensive as he makes it sound....Breaker was his nickname in life because of the way he broke bones., the Juggernaut is his role in the zodiac and he really resembles a Titan more than a Juggernaut to me anyway.
@NortonTaylor6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry- no hate, but you are kinda misrepresenting why the backstories for the ghosts weren't really included in the movie. It's not like the backstories were hidden, like treasures to be found; they were DVD extras. Sure today, that sounds silly; but you've just got to consider that this movie came out at a time in history were DVD extras were not only advertised, but expected to be watched by those who bought or rented the movies. One of the biggest selling points for DVD's over VHS's at the time was the access to the extra's. DVD sales made more money, so your movie better have worthwhile extras, right? Sure you could call it a cash grab, but I actually think it was really smart for this movie. The concept of DVD extras allowed for such detailed and interesting backstories for SO MANY ghost without weighing down the movie. And by weighing down, I mean making it too long- since most studio's wouldn't back a movie like this if it had a script that overstayed its welcome. It just seems like in your review you really liked the backstories(as do I), but it seems like you felt the filmmakers chose to ignore the backstories or were disrespecting the effort that went into this movies lore, without considering the time this movie came out in. While its a shame the backstories weren't in the movie for future moviegoers, I just don't think the filmmakers were being overtly disrespectful like a lot of people assume.
@qu4dq0r36 жыл бұрын
i actually enjoy expending universe explanations in movies nd stuff but if some backstories is hidden behind making off or similar facts you won't see that in theatrical releases so if you'd seen the movie in cinema you woudln't have the convenient backstory and stuff, THAT is the point he is trying to bring across here
@Pewpewpew1826 жыл бұрын
You are 100% spot on. I saw this as a kid back in 2001 and when we got the DVD they pretty much tell you to explore the films extras to get 100% of the time. Props on being a voice of reason.

Or maybe 'The Hammer' isn't an aggressive ghost like 'The Jackal' or 'The Juggernaut' and he is just angry at Dennis for helping Cyrus lock him up? After all 'The Hammer' does give Dennis a vision into the future where he is attacking Dennis.

One interesting tidbit about the Jackal, supposedly when the asylum burned down, they tried to get Ryan (his real name) out with the others, only for him to run further in, the general theory is he had a moment of lucidity and, realizing he'd never be cured, CHOSE to die in the fire.

This movie terrified me when I watched it as a child. I remember begging my mom to watch it...she relented but said I couldn't complain later. I had many long sleepless nights thinking about ghosts in my room that I couldn't see. This review brought the feelings back. 13 Ghosts is one of few movies to scare me. I love it!

Glad you brought up the backstories of the ghosts when you could. That was honestly crazy interesting to me when I first found out. I still do love watching this movie for the make up, set design and Dennis.

I think the nanny should've been a step mother and pregnant. If they ever remake it, they need to change that because the 'debt' and having a live in nanny makes no sense. Its the only complaint I have about this film. Other than that, I love this film.

I just realized something. How does the son see his mother at the end with no ghost glasses on his face?

Concerning the Juggernaut :) The Ghostnames in the book are all written in Latin ;) Titan is the closest to a juggernaut in latin. That is why he has another name in the book.
@deusdeaconReviews6 жыл бұрын
My question was more concerning the writing of the film , the writers chose to give that specific ghost three different names, yes its latin but unless you know that about latin its its still a different name, its just needlessly complicated, there was nothing stoping them from calling him the juggernaut throughout or the breaker, or titan and leaving it as that.
@AngelicMccormick11 ай бұрын
@@deusdeaconReviewsthe breaker is his nickname because he broke his victim's bones, the reason why he's called a titan is because he resembles a titan from Greek mythology, hence his appearance ❤

@@AngelicMccormick clearly didnt actually read my reply, it doesn't matter what the reason is, "My question was more concerning the writing of the film , the writers chose to give that specific ghost three different names" "its just needlessly complicated" from a WRITING perspective

Great review. I liked this movie. I had no idea it was a remake, I don't know if the story is the same, but I liked some of the plot devices and twists in the movie. At the beginning when he used the key and put it into that puzzle lock, that would have been a red flag for me. Great catch with the IV in his wife's ghosts I totally didn't even notice it.

When the movie was released on DVD, there's additional content on the CD, that explains all 13 ghosts and their backstories, though it's more reading than video as I recall.

I'm still confused about Cyrus from the beginning of the movie. Was it his plan to fake his own death? If he was actually attacked by the ghost and survived why did he never change his clothes and why continue to have a neck wound on display?

I saw that movie as a kid, which left me traumatized. I desperately searched for it years ago but couldn't find it, because I couldn't remember the title. And now by chance I found your review and immediately recognized the movie by the picture with the glass walls. Wow who would have thought that?!

The real question, is why the hell didn’t Cyrus clean the fake blood off himself or change his clothes after he faked his death.....did he just wear the same blood stained clothing for weeks?? And if so, Why??
@xmoonstarx3 жыл бұрын
In the script it is said that he wanted to fake himself as a ghost so they would not suspect of him, in fact that's why Arthur had to take off the glasses to realize that he was alive all the time because he remembers there are only 12 ghosts in the house. The script actually gives you more details that are only implied or happen later in the movie in a more explicit way.

Maybe American horror stories (or another TV show company) should buy the rights and make a season based on the back stories of the 12 ghost (actually 11 since I think the 4th ghost found peace after the movie) and how to get rid of them. That way you got a interesting origin story and introduce a challenge of removing them leaving intereating ways of doing so and if they want a twist ending after they are released (freed from being earth bound) introduce the birth of 12 new ghosts revealing that the black zodiac is a dark never ending thing. But that's just my idea lol

I love how in depth you go with this movie from beginning working your way to the end. It`s one of my all time favorites. I`m surprised I didn`t realize some things you mentioned, like the fact that Gene is holding an IV, the roman numeral for 4, even though I`ve seen this movie a thousand times. I also didn`t like how they didn`t go in depth with the background of the ghosts in the movie because usually ghost are portrayed as being all evil and no one ever stops and thinks that those ghosts were once human beings with stories of their own. I didn`t even know all their stories `til I fund a KZbin video detailing it. I look forward to seeing more of your reviews.
