Thirdgens represent some of the best designs to ever come out of GM. Still look modern too. I had an 85 TA and a 90 Formula. Loved them both.
@Epro955 жыл бұрын
I disagree on looking modern. A supra is a car that still looks modern, not a third gen fbody, not even close. I would agree they're a great looking car.

Evan Parsons Well styling is subjective, so everyone will have a different opinion. The third gen Firebird, particularly the 85-92 models, have more rounded and flowing lines than their boxier contemporaries. Plus the long hood short deck fastback look is timeless. Yes, the Supra (93-98)does still look modern enough, but it’s very rounded styling is clearly reminiscent of most 90s cars.

December of 81' I was in fourth grade and my best friends mom bought a new crossfire Z28 (one the very, very first) from the showroom of the local Chevy dealer, the first day she drove it to pick him up EVERY kid who was there walked out to the curb with their jaws dropped staring....fast forward 40 years, and I have a very nice, bought new 92' Z28 that my boy is about to take over to drive to high school, hopefully with success. Let's hope.

People don't realize how ultra cool both of these cars were in 1982, especially the design of the Trans Am. They were a radical departure from the 2nd generation and represented everything that was to become the "New Wave" 1980's. Even though Mustang did their 3rd generation redesign in 1979, it was too early and did not hit like the F-bodies did in 1982. By then, the Mustang styling already seemed like tired late 70's design. Of course, GM was on a roll because another radical redesign, the Corvette, dropped in 1984 which solidified the wedge styling that dominated the 1980's.

I just can't believe how these 2 models were so sexy back then and even more nowadays seeing how bland is the style of the larger part of cars in this class and beyond too. And I just can't decide wich one was better: The Camaro looks more aggressive but the Trans Am has definitely a more misterious look with its sleek hood, the pop up headlights and its iconic invisible tailights wich inspired some stylish euro sport cars years later such as the stylish '86 Volvo 480.

@@Epro95 It kind of is timeless in how it performs. Some crazy Norwegian has proven 3rd gen Firdebird is aerodynamic enough for going over 400kph (or 250mph). The 'Polly Trans Am' went 407kph in less than optimal conditions and with huge rear wing for safety. If the car didn't have the custom wing, and did have aerodynamic wheels, it could have gone faster. Otherwise, it still managed to equal Bugatti Veyron.

I didn't like the asymmetric hoods of the first few years of Trans Ams. I think they hit their groove in 1985, then they kept that classic styling until 1991, when they changed it for the worse until they hit their peak with the 1998- 2002 WS6 classic styling. Yes, I have owned a few of them over the years, and still have my 2001 WS6 that I purchased in 2000.

The assymetric hood was originally developed to accomodate turbocharger sitting on a top of Pontiac 4.9 Turbo V8 that didn't make it into production.
