Yay welcome to the club. I’ve been a Vault member since very early on and have almost all of them. Super fun! Of course I’m a huge Jack fan. Most of them revolve around his projects but not always. Sometimes they venture off in other directions which is nice. I was pretty shocked when I saw the announcement of Electric Recording Company and The White Stripes. Definitely didn’t see that one coming. It’s the 20 yr anniversary of White Blood Cells and yes Third Man did open a store in London about a month ago so it’s probably a combo of those 2 things that resulted in ERC.

I love your videos and you take on quality of recording on vinyl. Big question though. Why does every album Steely Dan releases sounds like an audiophile recording? I have been listening to them on vinyl since the 70's . Better mixing? Better engineering ?Better musicians? Or is it that they will do 200 takes of a song before committing it to tape (Aja). No matter the reason for me only Alan Parson's comes somewhat close consistently. Your thoughts? And what will we do when Donald Fagen stops recording?I guess that's really 2 questions

I loved the 2LP set, great songs and sound quality. This 4LP set I thought the songs were a little weaker but as a completist it's a must. The first album's spindle hole was way too small and I could not place the record on the turntable without reaming out the hole first and it's still a tight fit.

My favorite Third Man vault release is their version of Trout Mask Replica. At first thought that seems an absurd selection for an audiophile release - but they did an astounding job on it. I canceled my subscription however due to Jack White related preponderance of releases - I’m a fan but not quite a completist level fan. I’ll try to get this (the Dylan) on the secondary market.

So, I just picked up the cd box set of this, so I am coming at this a bit differently, admittedly. The cd box is nicely put together with two hard-bound books: one for the cds and one on the essays and overview of the discs' contents. But the thing is, what matters to me, much less than how many pops or clicks are on the records, is the collection of songs. This period is with at least two 50-min cds from the Infidels sessions. That band is Fantastic. That's the reason I bought this. And I would have purchased it sooner if I had been paying attention. What a band! Mark Knopfler is a great fit for these tunes. I really began to hear Knopfler's genius because of Infidels back in the 80s, and I think this collection of tunes from those sessions are an essential part of the Knopfler catalog. Okay, but then there's Dylan's cover of Sweet Caroline from the rehearsals disc! The music on these discs just adds so much to my regard for and pleasure in Dylan's music. (And this is the only Dylan Bootleg box I own.)

Several times they opened the box and looked at discogs and based the price of their theft on high secondary market prices. We are probably a similar age Michael - I started listening to Dylan in the mid 80s starting with his genius 60s trilogy. I then started to expand my listening and went through the rest of the 60s and 70s records. When I reached the 80s I hated pretty much all of them until Oh Mercy. Nothing has changed since - I bought the dbl LP version and it didn’t move me at all. So not for me but good video and very informative.

I actually liked the "Christian" period of Dylan very much and "Infidels" was a great album, too, but also did not think much of the records that followed until "Oh Mercy". However, with the two purely acoustic albums in 1992 and 1993 he was back to form in my opinion and has not made any really weak albums since then.

@@markusberzborn6346 I was at Julian Cope's CORNUCOPIA festival when he performed together with Klaus Schulze. @@seamuscolgan7654 Oh great, this must have been quite an experience, I missed that. But I have the LP of this concert of course. Unfortunately Klaus Schulze has retired from the stage for health reasons, but at least I saw him perform in 1983, 1985, 2001 (KlangArt, available on CD) and 2008 with Lisa Gerrard (Loreley, also available on CD and as DVD video) and it was always very special and each time quite different, as his concerts mostly consisted of improvisations anyway.
@seamuscolgan76543 жыл бұрын
@@markusberzborn6346 U were very lucky to have seen him so often!
@markusberzborn63463 жыл бұрын
@@seamuscolgan7654 Yes indeed. Would have liked to see him in the seventies with the large modular analog equipment on stage, but I was too young then. Another interesting detail: After the great Loreley experience I wanted to hear Klaus Schulze and Lisa Gerrard again in 2009 in Essen. So I went there with two friends who were Schulze fans but had never attended one of his concerts before. We were happily anticipating what was about to come when suddenly a man came on stage and announced that Klaus Schulze was sick and not able to play but Lisa Gerrard would be willing to perform alone. And the concert promoters were so fair that those who were not interested in a Gerrard solo performance could leave and get their money back. So some people left the venue but I stayed because I just did not want to drive home again without hearing any music. And I did not regret it, my respect for Lisa Gerrard as a musician and singer has even increased since then. What she did was spontaneously improvising to some pre-programmed rather minimalistic Schulze chords and sequences or sometimes even singing without any accompaniment.

To be honest, I don't like what they've done here. In order to get the Bootleg Series 16 on vinyl, you need to buy (i) 2LP black vinyl version, (iii) 4LP colored vinyl Third Mar version, and (iii) a Third Man 7" single. Nothing matches, so it looks a little sloppy, and of course, it ends up being very expensive.
@peterw64903 жыл бұрын
I know these are bootleg recordings but unfortunately the vinyl for this set was mastered poorly. Compare the cd tracks to the vinyl set versions and you will see. I cancelled my third man subscription as a result. They dropped the ball on this one. The consensus is the 2lp set mastering-wise is superior to this release.
