I loved that route when I did it. Still, gives me the excuse (not that I need one!) to go back again and do your original route. The view up top is, quite simply, one of the most special in the UK.

Ah yes, getting on the wrong path of Gaoith. I did that route trying to remember the insructions I'd been told. I got it all right until the last bit where the advice was take the main forest road back to Feshie. Forgot that part. I needed to get back to Aviemore for the train so once again I foolishly trusted the dotted line that only exists on the map as I thought it would be quicker. It was equally as overgrown as it was swampy. So bad that I ended up carrying the bike and walked in the stream as it was the path of least resistance. That last descent was so overgrown i couldn't see where the path was through the heather but at least the comedy falls were well cushioned.
