Lowe's Sponsored this video where I show how easy it can be to build a deck. I used their easy to use Deck Designer Software to design a beautiful and easy to build deck, then took the print out into Lowe's where they gathered the materials for me and delivered it right to the building site.

Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds kzbin.infoUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. It's really inspiring to see how creative all these ordinary people are in making beautiful and useful spaces on a modest scale.

I’ve seen a lot of bull shit decks that are easily done, lazy craftsmanship. Though this video is a little on the advanced side. This is a legit deck. It really doesn’t get much better than this. It was brilliantly laid out. No chatter. No dumb music. Thanks for sharing this. I’ve watched over 30 videos tonight and this is the one.

I found the chapters in kzbin.infoUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up. I especially found this Ryan’s Shed Plans to be of great use when it came to building the roof. I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this Ryan’s Shed Plans.

Why didn't you add a trim piece under the railing and then screw up from the bottom? Screwing from the top will create a place for moisture to get into the wood and it doesn't look as good.

The structural design and execution of this deck is very well done ... But I have just a couple of problems with it. Notching railing posts is no longer code in any jurisdiction. Why in the world would you want to weaken the 4X4 posts to 2X4 right at the point where they need to be the strongest? The 4X4 railing posts should be bolted to both the INSIDE of the rim joists and any intersecting joists, or blocking, with galvanized through bolts, washers and nuts to maximize strength and safety. And why in the world did you feel you needed to attach the deck frame to your house? *"According to the International Residential Code², adopted by most states, a deck does not need a building permit if it is “less than 200 square feet, under 30” off the ground, does not serve a required exit door, and is not attached to the dwelling“ - if it is freestanding."* By attaching a deck to the house frame you are opening a can of worms where a great deal of damage will be done to the house. You have introduced a way for water to enter the sill joist, the frame, the foundation and the siding. A space of 1/2 inch between the deck frame and the house would save you from damaging your house and the need for a permit and inspections, as well, if you kept the sq footage under 200. The posts, footings and girders in your design leave out any structural need to drive even a single screw or nail into your house... Why would you even consider doing that after going to the trouble of building a well made self supporting deck? One more thing... I don't mean to be nit picking , but this one is kind of basic...The deck is too high for this house. You will be in for an unpleasant surprise when you get the first decent Michigan snowfall this winter. That storm door will not open because there is no clearance between the bottom of the door and the deck. There should be a step down to the deck, the height of a stair riser, so the door can open over the snow and ice. I'm sure you have found that out by now. What a shame. The only solutions are to remove the storm door in the winter when you need it the most, or put a snow melt electric mat down on the deck, wide enough to let the storm door swing open, or cut out an opening in front of the door and install an open grate that can be walked on but will allow the snow to fall through. That will work until the snow accumulates deeper than the deck is high... What did you end up doing with that door problem?

Nice video! No need for the joist hangers on the rim board though. I guess you could use them upside down since the rim board is hanging from the joists. Hangers are only necessary if the joist is butting into its support piece without being supported within 4’ of the connection.
@webgem14
@webgem14 2 жыл бұрын
I wish I’d seen this comment before building my deck. The upside down joist hanger is a pretty good idea. You could use them for and they would provide extra support for the rim joist, facing, and rails. They could also be easier to attach. The main thing they do right side up is help align your nails for toenailing on the inside of the rim. Doing that also does attach the hanger to the joist, which then is attached to the rim. So that does provide some support but not as much as the other way.

Pretty good video. Bonus for telling people to let the wood season before coating with anything. One issue though, in all my years of construction the one thing an inspector will tell you to correct, is the lack of gap in the decking. You could be fishing those boards out of the ocean, but it's still better to finish nail as a spacer to avoid a headache.

You're missing some crucial steps in your math here. Using your dimensions with the correct calculation gives nearly the exact same answer for the spacing, but that was incredibly lucky, lol. The total ballister count, however, will always be wrong. If, for some reason you wanted your spacing to also be 1 5/16", your math would have said that you needed like 31-33 ballisters. What you need to do is add the width of the ballister to the desired maximum spacing (4") before you divide, round up and finish off the rest of the math as written, and THEN subtract the ballister width to get the spacing. To be clear, the calculation used as I described will only tell you largest possible spacing (equally across the entire span, without exceeding 4"), given a specific ballister width. It can of course be modified to give a range of possible ballister widths at specific spacings. Heres and example of how far off it can be: Span - 60", width - 1.5", max gap - 4" Wrong way: (60" + 1.5") / 4" = 15.37" = 16 total ballisters 61.5" / 16 = 3.84" spacing Corrected: (60" + 1.5") / (4" + 1.5") = 11.18" = 12 total ballisters (61.5" / 12) - 1.5" = 3.63 spacing And yes, I know this video is 5 years old. But, I stared at the math for so long trying to figure out why something just didnt seem quite right. When it finally clicked I had to unload.

In the land of the free, and home of the brave, people must run and ask permission on building a simple deck on what's allegedly their own property, which it really is not in the final analysis.
@matthewronson5218
@matthewronson5218 5 жыл бұрын
@Liam O’Neil Yep. They want their 'cut' and provide 'services' for a 'fee' (tax) just the the Mafia. People will twitch and say 'oh no, we need codes!' but don't know there are areas around the country wit NO building codes and they get along just fine. Places along the Left coast have so many codes, restrictions and zoning requirements that there is a Housing crisis. Even in commercial or public buildings, any code that beyond common sense is just more taxes. If property were truly "private" it would be like you said: up to the OWNER. They do the same with "private" vehicles. It starts with "simple emissions tests. Then, it's "safety and emissions" (for your own good). NOW, any trouble light, even minor BS ones that have nothing to do with emissions and safety HAVE to be repaired. Codes also do NOT stop the slip-shod hacks, pavement and roofing gypsies or similar no-class, fly by night operators from doing what they do.

@steve gale So how is building a deck so obtrusive as to require one to run and get permission from the authorities-for the usual fee i.e. tax?
@matthewronson5218
@matthewronson5218 5 жыл бұрын
@steve gale It should be evident that I read your opinion thoroughly and quite properly, my friend. Now, if you'd do me the courtesy of giving the same due diligence on what I wrote in response, then we can get somewhere. Or don't and think uninformed opinion bolstered by willful ignorance is a way to go through life, at least on this matter. Have a Blessed Day.
@matthewronson5218
@matthewronson5218 5 жыл бұрын
@steve gale Please try to follow the conversation-if you can. Clearly you project your ignorance onto others. Stop and reflect for a moment, it's not overly complicated We're talking about building a simple deck, off of what is allegedly private property, not building a junk yard in a residential area. Do you even comprehend what private property rights mean? Obviously, you do not. You surely have the proper mindset to make a good and obedient slave, so compliant and willing submitting to authority 2-3x over such a simple and harmless project-one ones alleged private property, usually after paying a permit tax for this privilege you esteem so much. If you think checking in with your bureaucratic masters over such a plain and simple project is perfectly fine, then good on you! Join an HOA where you get a $250.00 fine for not winding up your garden hose. You'd surely be in heaven! May your chains lay lightly about you. Have a nice day.

you shouldn't need to learn fractional measurements if you're not using the Imperial System. 1 foot is 12 inches? 1 yard is 36 inches? 8/4 inches instead of just 2 inches? WTF? Where's the pattern? With the Metric System? 1 centimeter is 10 millimeters. 100 centimeters is 1 meter. 1000 millimeters is 1 meter. Done.
