RIP Alan Arkin, man of much talent, lived a good long life and never stopped working right up until he passed at 89.

For years I quoted this film, as this moment and bit of wisdom has stayed with me ... for 19 years???? Oh my. I've been quoting this film for 19 years. hahah! I recently quoted this to a friend who told me... oh, yes, Kierkegaard. This conversation must've been inspired by "Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards." - Soren Kierkegaard. The longer we live, the more beauty and wisdom is revealed.

At the end of the day, people are all looking for the same thing, and the movie, which is a bit nihilistic and a little depressing, ends with a simple, mundane gesture that leaves the viewer with a feeling of hope, and maybe a bit more understanding, and empathy for our fellow man. Great movie!

Yes, the ending on the subway platform. I think of that so often.

Alan Arkin is so good in this. It's a small story about real, believable people. And Frankie Faison saying the the "old gypsy double curse" here is so fine. The whole cast is terrific. One of my favorite films of all time.
