Those of you who don't know what's going on, here's the first grade explanation: To win, you have to complete your hand. Normally you need four 3-of-a-kinds (or runs of 3) and one pair. Unfortunately this isn't enough and you also need something called a yaku before you can declare victory. These are just 40~ win conditions that you also have to learn. One of them is called 13 orphans and it completely disregards making sets and runs of 3 and lets you win by getting 1 and 9 of each suit, 1 of each dragon tile, 1 of each wind direction and 1 extra tile that matches any of the above. It's very unlikely and risky, therefore worth a great many points if you pull it off.

What really kills me is how far he starts from it... When you have like five orphans and you go "hmmm, maybe it's time to go for a yakuman" that's the part of your rookie character arc where you're supposed to eat shit and learn from the mistake! The tiles reward this dog instead. Incredible.

Imagine you're playing a game of poker, and you win one hand with a royal straight flush. Then it happens again. Then a third time. All in a row. You now begin to comprehend the odds of completing the Thirteen Orphans Yakuman hand in mahjong - this could feasibly be a once in a lifetime event. And he captured it on film - the mad lad.
@MordecaiXLII4 жыл бұрын
Kokushi isn't even remotely a "once in a lifetime thing" if you play riichi mahjong on a regular basis. It's like the most common yakuman (maybe with suuankou).

Just to explain to anyone who doesn't know the rules of Mahjong: Thirteen Orphans is a hand of Yakuman (Special high-scoring hands) which consists of 1 of each Terminal and Honor tile in the game (1 & 9 Man, 1 & 9 Pin, 1 & 9 Sou, 1 of each Wind, and 1 of each Dragon) with one extra either drawn or Ron (called on other player's discard) to form a pair. Given the nature of this hand, it is a Menzenchin type (Closed Hand) yaku (winning hand) that, as shown in the vid, completely relies on the luck of the draw and your starting hand. So difficult is this Yakuman, that it is recommended you should never go for it unless you have a starting hand of at least 8 of the 13 orphans. Since there is only 4 of any tile in the game, if 4 of any orphan is discarded, the hand is lost, and given the stringent and weird conditions of the hand, pivoting to any other yaku is almost impossible save for an extremely rare Seven Pairs, (as Apollo mentions) but at the final stages of the hand pivoting is impossible. The fact that Apollo was able to pull off a Thirteen Orphans is frankly insane. Yakuman by themselves are few and far between, and among the 3 Big Yakuman, Thirteen Orphans is definitely on the most restrictive and committal side. He started with _5_ of the 13 orphans in his hand. I've tried Thirteen Orphans with 9 in my starting hand and not get it. Absolutely pogged out of my mind when I saw this

I got mine just now. Finally! It is easier to get in in 3 player mj. Man now im aiming for a triple yakuman. Difficult man. I actually helped a guy achieved it by helping him with his draw. And opening up the Dora indicator. Hehe I love 3 player mj, less headache especially in ranked. Im stuck with adept rank for 2 years or so n the closes I got was 1 win away to expert. Thn I was in a 7 losing streak which bogged me down to adept 1* lol

There's no benefit to riichi there because once you hit yakuman, you don't get any more han. Also, you waste 1000 points in the off chance it affects the rankings and opponents know you're in tenpai so they're supposed to avoid dealing in to the ippatsu but apparently the toimen doesn't care with his shitty ass open hand with the 1-2-3 sou. I honestly don't know what's going on here.
@chasecrocker39564 жыл бұрын
The guy was probably in tenpai with a weak hand and didn't notice the lack of terminals and honors in the discard, so he thoughtlessly discarded, not wanting to break his tenpai.
