As the war continued onwards draining the land of blood and coin, enough was finally enough. While the conflict started over religious grounds, by this time it had changed to a conflict about political power. Oddly, that made it much easier to find compromise and terms to finally bring the conflict to an end. We see its effect on the maps as the Hapsburg empire began to splinter but the Thirty Years War left a lasting legacy on Europe and the way we think about global conflict forever.

I would argue the 7 years war and war(s) sorounding the French Revolution/Napoleon are arguably just as large as WW1 in terms of scope compared to population and economy size. Especially the Napoleonic wars took a lot longer.

I think what they meant was that it wasn't until WW1 that Europe saw a conflict as proportionally destructive as the 30 Years War
@ocadioan
@ocadioan 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, saying that the next war to rival the 30 years war was WWI completely ignores just how large of a conflict the Napoleonic wars were, as well as the enormous legacy that they brought with them.
@shrimpisdelicious
@shrimpisdelicious 3 жыл бұрын
I think they’re referring to destruction and death on the scale of the 30 Years War. Yes, the Napoleonic Wars were big and consequential, but you don’t get the kind of apocalyptic imagery associated with them that you do with the 30 Years War or World War I.

@BobHerzog1962
@BobHerzog1962 3 жыл бұрын
@@shrimpisdelicious Then they can't read as it seems. The French revoloution alone was horrific. It wasn't called Reign of Terror for nothing. Napoloen too let his armies live of the land (in combination with the corps system that was how he achieved the astonishing speed his army could march with). Russia deployed a strategy of burned earth to defeat his grand army. That sounds smart but always entails horrific loss of live on the civilian side. One could go into the other coalitions, into conflicts connected like the Haiti Slave Rebellion they already have a series on which had horrific numbers of causalties as well. Or the Penisular war (often a mixture between Gurellia and Civil war and thus horendus loss of life). I would even argue in terms of destroyed infrastructure the Naploanic Wars hit a far wider area than the first World War On the Western Front it was basically a stalemate because Germany's infrastructure was basically unharmed and France's outside of the are of the fighting as well. It is also hard to decide what to count and what not. With the 30s War victims of disease and faime are usually counted in. In more modern wars they are often not. I.e. the story of the Spanish Flue is often told with the intorduction that the pandemic killed more people than the war. So if you want to use the estimates from the Naploenic wars (I would also count the whole French revolution in any rate so including reign of terror, counter revoloutions and the subsequent merciless put down of those) you either have to add all death that could feasible caused by the circumstances they created (France was hit by several major famies due to the stress the revolution and the wars due to it created and in famine people die ...) or you have to substract those from the 30 years war. In either case they become much more comparable. For similar reasons I'm kind of annoyed how small the 7 years war is often made. That lies purley to the strange fact that most people only talk about the military deaths. But of course as in any war civilians suffered from diseases the soilders brought, from food and material the soilders lived on/stole, from outright destruction and so forth.
