Saladin was a truer knight than most of the Crusaders. I was shocked to learn that as a kid reading a biography of Richard I Leoncoeur and Salah-ah Din during the Third Crusade. One time he even sent a fresh Arabian war-trained stallion to Richard when he saw him on a sick nag before a battle.

First time I learned about these events were from the Saladin campaign of Age of Empires 2. I was barely past counting my age in single digits, and it went a long way to stoking my interest in history. I found their telling of the story fascinating. There are several Antiochs in modern-day Turkey (the famous Antioch-on-the-Orontes, as well as Antioch in Pisidia, Antioch-on-the-Maeander, and several others), so I assumed, like all the cities named Seleuceia they founded everywhere, that there would be others floating around in various places in the Middle East; but, no, all of the Antiochs somehow ended up in modern Turkey.

2:03 Tripoli and Antioch are mixed up 4:23 It's Baldwin IV, not VI, and skipping his reign takes out a lot of context around Saladin's story, with Baldwin IV defeating and nearly killing Saladin outright at the Battle of Montgisard. 4:43 Baldwin's designated heir, Baldwin V did not have Leprosy, that was invented by the 2005 movie Kingdom of Heaven. Sources don't explicitly say what illness Baldwin V had, only that he was a sickly child who took ill and died, which was a common fate for children at the time. Otherwise, looking forward to the series!

Just a little factoid from a local geologist: The Horns of Hattin is actually a dormant volcano. The horns themselves are the rim of the caldera, while the lower part in the middle is the caldera itself. The place is filled with volcanic rocks and basalt, and have interesting magnetic properties.

As a devout Catholic myself who loves to study history I really admire Saladin as a Sultan. He was a great leader who united all of the islamic nations under one banner and gave the Crusaders a nasty right hook to the face. Heck they called King Richard the Lionheart because he still faced Saladin without fear even though they all knew how much of a boss Saladin is. Yeah Saladin was a great Sultan and I respect and admire him.

In your next video in this series, I sincerely hope you mention that Balian D'Ibelin (unlike his film counterpart) was actually AT Hattin. His forces were in the rear of the army, and he actually managed to accomplish ANOTHER breakout from Salah-Ad-Din's encirclement. But Balian's breakout was even more successful than Raymond's, because Balian managed to save somewhere around 3,000 of the Crusader Infantry with his breakout.
