An important note about the Danish Intervention is that the Danish king was also a Duke of the HRE, so Ferdinand's extended ambitions were a direct threat not to the Kingdom of Denmark, but to Christian IV's personal titles in the HRE.

A curious note on that is, that Christian IV didn't intervene as the king of Denmark, as the counsel around him blocked that. Instead he used his personal titel as Duke of Slesvig-Holstein and his personal funds to circumvent the console and still intervene.

Gustavus Adolphus was paying his soldiers more, so they wouldn't pillage and punnished those who did. He of course couldn't be everywhere, but his soldiers were a bit "nicer" than other soldiers. But then he died and his successors weren't so enlightened.

I’ve read in a book about Wallenstein that the horrors of the 30 years’ war resulted from a combination of too much and not enough economy. Unlike in the middle ages, countries now has the money to raise large armies, but they didn’t yet have the economy or bureaucracy to supply the army.

Not just that, by the time the 30 years war started, the Dutch were already 50 years in war with Spain. We call this war the 80 years war which also ended in the Peace of Westphalia.

@@oihanlarranegi472 while Phillip II was a man of state and politics, working hard to rule a world spamming empire (he was also king of Portugal at that time so he also ruled over parts of Africa and India plus Phillipine islands and America) and was a pretty chill man, not wanting to conquer more, he already had much work, and only wanted to be referred as “sir” instead of “your majesty” and with your hat in your hand instead of a pompous reverence, his son Phillip III left all the ruling to his “validos” and got into hunts and parties instead.

There was an military rank at the time, the "Brandmeister". The Brandmeisters role was to ransom villages and settlements for vsluab!es and supplies under the(routinele realized)threat of thoroughly burning them down. Brandmeister (fire-master) is ironically today the title of the chief of many local firefighter chapters.

The sack of Magdeburg in Lower Saxony resulted in the deaths of 20,000 citizens and the burning of 1,700 buildings. In the span of four days only 5,000 inhabitants and 200 buildings remained. War is hell.

Great overview of the conflict. As is described in this video, these were "religious wars" only in the sense that the battle lines were determined by religious affiliation (Roman Catholic or Protestant), not because Catholics and Protestants personally hated each other that much. Or put another way, each area's religious affiliation was much more rooted in their pre-existing social and political divides; when war broke out, those socio-political divides were usually the real causes being fought for. For example, as shown in the video, one big threat was Frederick II's absolutism, and the potential dominance of the Holy Roman Empire, and its threat to other nations/kingdoms/empires/families.

Hey, can you do videos on the life of Elizabeth I? It's really interesting. Her father, Henry VIII, never cared for her, and yet she looked up to him. She survived several assassination attempts, ruled during war, rebellion, and armadas attempting to invade, and live to 69. Her unusual habits should be noted too, as well as the earl of Essex.
