The Thirty Years War is one of the bloodiest conflicts in all of human history. Depending on which historian you're consulting, the death toll ranges from 4.5 to 8 million. The next conflict that would claim more lives would be WW1, several hundred years later. And civilians died at an astounding rate, nearly 7 to 1. While there is a lot of focus on the military aspect of this conflict, we want to try something different. We'll be examining the effects of the war as a humanitarian crisis. To those living at the time, such conflict must have felt like the end of the world. And so, we start with the first herald of apocalypse: Conquest.

@@xnikolasbs2230 Also, basically in permanent Thirty Years War crisis mode. The Fantasy element is a pretty big difference, though: For instance, the Empire of Man is polytheistic, with a fairly large contingent of priests who can work actual miracles. Religious strife often comes between cults of different gods and their different interpretations of the same god, but it's generally at once more stable and more fractious. Their scholastic establishment includes a large number of wizards, who... do a lot of research, on top of being wizards, but are also weird mystery cults. They have enemies on all sides who cannot be bargained with. Travel is much harder, because the woods are full of monsters - at the same time, they're larger, because, well, enemies on all sides who cannot be bargained with, helps to band together. These factors make them more diverse as well.

Honestly, having 12 episodes on this would not be a bad thing. I'd love some longer series where they really go a bit more into detail. I mean, the consequences of the treaty of Westphalia on even just the concept of souvereignty would be worth a video of their own.

I don't really see how comparing the death toll of the 30 Years' War to World War I is all that impressive. They didn't have industrial weapons by they did have, well, 30 years. When a conflict lasts more than 7 times as long as another despite the era its casualties will keep piling up.

"The peace of Augsburg left out one group.. Calvinists" Mennonite here to say that this is wrong. The Anabaptists (the group to later become Mennonites, Hutterites, Amish, among others) were very much left out of this, in part because they rejected the concept of a state religion (see: the Schleitheim Confession, 1527). They were also pacifist, by that point, so they tended to be on the receiving side of the violence. They were considered heretics by Catholics, Lutherans, and Calvinists, so they had few safe places to settle.

@@prospero768 I could be wrong, as it's sometimes hard to keep track of all the Reformation movements, but I think the Brethren would have been considered part of the Anabaptists. I know the "Swiss Brethren" were, so I'm assuming that's a connection, but I'll have to research.

@nrando5480
@nrando5480 2 жыл бұрын
You're practically right, but when talking about historical Protestantism historians will end up dividing Protestantism in three main camps: - Lutherans - Anglicans - Calvinist / Reformed The Reformed category includes all denominations (even the movements preceding the actual reformation) that are deemed to have "fully" reformed into decentralized churches with strict interpretations of the Bible. Because John Calvin's theology influenced virtually all of these movements over the years, and with the Dutch Calvinists being historically the largest movement within the Reformed branch, the group is also sometimes called Calvinists because of that.
@sxeptomaniac
@sxeptomaniac 2 жыл бұрын
@@nrando5480 You are incorrect. Lutherans, Calvinists/Reformed, and Anglicans were the three main branches of the Magisterial Reformation, but the Anabaptists came out of the Radical Reformation. The Radical Reformers rejected state church (the Munsterites being the one major exception) and so did not follow the magisterial pattern. Also, no, the Anabaptists were not Calvinist. On the contrary, Calvin supported jailing, torturing, and executing Anabaptists as heretics, because they rejected his theology.
