This video is one of the best from "30x40 Design Studio" for people looking to improve their businesses. I will be very happy if I can get to the next step this year with some of the points you highlighted Eric. Following your channel helped me to focus on important issues to get back to work and your enthusiasms lifts me through rocky periods. Unfortunately, I am not sure where am I heading to (this is one thing to figure out this year) and I am proceeding slowly and with difficulty to find enough time, but as much as I feel frustrated sometimes having to look after my children (being trapped in the housewife role), now I realise that they can be another source of creativity, a new windows to the world. There is opportunity everywhere with the right approach. Thanks! x

Hi everyone, I am an architectural/interior designer from Hong Kong. I am curious on the rate that successfully getting a client through social media marketing for architecture/building project in other places. . The reason I am asking is I feel like the investment for an architecture/building project is too much, it’s different from other design services like graphic/website. Client in my place would not look for designer through social media. For residential project, it may works for small scale project. But for commercial project, it seems referral is still the best way to get client. (At least in my place) Have not said that, I have been following this channel for awhile. This is my first comment and I want to give my sincere thanks to Eric for constantly provide value to us and this industry. You are a great mentor to me and to all designer/anyone in this field. Keep it up:)

For people who are already building designers or maybe I should say architects who maybe have started fresh out of college or university that have in mind opening a business in architect to gain some experience for a pathway to train to be a structural engineer, I'm not sure for I'm now overwhelmed by it. I'm left wondering that to take that pathway, maybe he or she needs to seek to work for a boss for it's less stressful than working for yourself for you have more time to focus on studying to train to be a structural engineer when working for a boss as an architectural designer. Maybe employers are only seeking for people who are in their 30's or 40's to work for a boss so that people working for a boss can reach that pathway to have time to train to be a structural engineer. If people at college or university are only seeking for students who, let's say....! May have had previous building experience and had previous training experience on cad software and not work experience in architectural design then maybe that could be helpful after graduating as an architect at college or university. Maybe employers are not seeking for people who are in their senior years that are maybe in their 50's or 60's. I think these days, young people, fresh out of high school need to make a decision, stick to it and stay there for then it's probably too late after that. Maybe this is why people at college or university find it hard to search for students who wanna train to be structural engineers for there needs to be entry requirements for previous work experience in architectural design who worked for a boss. I also think that people who are watching this video need more than that. People will need mentoring and face to face on a weekly basis, maybe even better for people who don't know from a to be. I think there is a reason for you to regret not taking on marketing. If you sound realistic then feel free to share.

@stephenshade21794 жыл бұрын
Hi Mauro, he is referring to speculation projects or builds. You just pick a lot that you find interesting and pretend that your dream client hired you to design your dream project. Then you design it, draw it up, model it, and maybe render it. Then you post it as part of your portfolio. (Shadehouseplans.com)

how to convince ourselves that we are able to complete a "real" project? because you know, the case in college is no more serious than a real project. And at school when we don't finish just got bad grades, absolutely different from the consequences of a real project ... And how to get project specialization that we are able to do? because in school I only learn as you say "generalism", and therefore I'm not sure what kind of building is right I can design it expertly. My problem is that I've worked behind a desk all my life. My line of work was with general contractors doing the technical part of the project, i.e: shop drawings, design reviews, material selection and approval, quantity surveying, sometimes value engineering. After nearly 17 years of this type of work, I've been laid off recently and now I'm thinking about starting my own business but don't know how to begin, and time is not a luxury for a 43-year-old. will I be able to renew my design skills again, will I be able to compete with the new generation. What are the necessary steps I need to take to get back on my feet and build a good business? Your insights are highly appreciated.

This is an awesome video. I just launched a drafting and design service before Christmas, then got pneumonia (fun!), so although I've laid a lot of groundwork and done a lot of research on who I should market to, pneumonia really took me off track and it's been difficult to get a grasp of who I should market to. As I'm not an architect (yet), I have limitations on what I can do and for whom. I also discovered my limitations based on the tools I have available. I recently heard a man say this. If you imagine a navy approaching a beachhead in a storm preparing for battle, there are three kinds of people: 1. Those who, from the bow of a ship, only see the storm 2. Those who, looking out from the ship to the beach, only see the obstacles 3. Those who, from the ship, only see the objective This video has helped me a lot to clear my head and set me back on the right path. Thank you for this one!

I’m sorry if you refuse to answer this question because people don’t usually like talking about money. But what percentage of a build project does the architect get? how much do you charge on average per client? How many clients would you usually get per year? I don’t know about much of this stuff so detailed answers will be appreciated.
@blacksheep_774 жыл бұрын
So you got me...I'm 51, started my own design studio focused on furniture, cabinets, and millwork, in early 2019, and it's still slow going. Totally agree that clients arrive when its time and projects always have a way of arriving to meet the financial needs. I have a list of revenue streams that I am attempting to work on, but passive income is something that I hadn't heard before and is a bit intimidating since I'm largely disinterested in content management via socials. However, you present a deep challenge here, and it's one that I have been contemplating for years: that of building relationships with future clientele so they know you and trust you as a knowledge resource (via the internet and socials...oh the irony) before they ever need you to actually design anything for them. I am similar to you in that I have done podcasting for years, have done photography for 3 decades, video editing and producing, and I love writing. Putting all that together into a business model is something that has been difficult to grasp, but this video has helped me to see it from a different perspective. Your platform and voice has certainly been a source of motivation for me the last two years...I"m now fully entrenched in Notion because of one of your videos. Keep after it.

You are a huge talent with a great mind set, so just keep on doing your stuff :)...Coming from another architect, this a big praise. I have noticed that you always lean your head on the right side. Have you ever checked your Atlas ( the first cervical vertebra of the spine)? It is probably not in the right place, and is causing you discomfort. I did the Atlas alignment procedure 4 years ago, the alternative method with use of a pneumatic gun, and it work miracles for me. Now I am strait as one can be, and have lot less neck and back pain. Check it out when you find time, you'll appreciate it ;) Cheers man
