I believe we as a society tend to overlook the importance of context with not just musical prodigies but any prodigy within any performance discipline. Mozart, Liszt and others had their salons, sheet music, letters, occasional audiences small and large and of course the few who came before. But then soon you get folks like Mahler who have an even deeper pool of "those who came before" and then now exposure has gone into hyper-drive with mass communication and a world opened up for all to hear and play. Now you have folks like Yuja Wang who is to my mind the culmination of history, context, education, talent and inspiration. Good for us and good for this young boy that now we have him join that list of exciting prodigies. But along with all this wonderful stuff we also have wonderful distractions. Hope it isn't an arduous thing for the lad to continue staying focused on this one glorious thing.
