Have you ever done a video about the old AMD Dual Graphics setup? Where you crossfire an APU with a discrete GPU? I believe that was a trick the A10-7850K was capable of, but only with a very small number of DGPUs.

Ya that was about the best parlor trick you could do with these things since the PCI express bandwidth made it terrible to use with any mid to high end cards of the time period. I love these experiments with older hardware. Real world computing for many people. I recently resurrected an old family PC for my nephews. Asrock FM2+ based, A10 7700K, SSD boot and mechanical HD for storage, 16gb RAM. I added a GTX970, replaced a dead HD and a front fan to help the airflow. The motherboard BIOS needed updating as it was overvolting badly at default, with scary temperatures and throttling. It still was with the new BIOS, though less so, so I manually undervolted the CPU. It could overclock with a better cooler, but the naked and ropy VRMs would hold it back. The good news was that it ran Total War Warhammer 2 well - the battle benchmark on medium settings and large units was 59 FPS, with some patches of 42 FPS. And in this real world of low income computing, the GTX 970 is still good enough to carry over to the next, more significant, upgrade - I'd happily pair it with a Ryzen and it would play their whole Steam library with ease.

Fm2+ socket was my experience of HOW NOT! to buy a new gaming PC. Few years ago, in my country (Brazil, wecolme) some online vendors and sellers were using marketplaces to sell pre-built pc games with accessible price, but most of them were Fm2 plus or old Sandy bridge intels. I had the unfortunate of buying one with the A4 7300 dual core chip and it even had no dedicate GPU, only the Igpu. At first i used for minecraft, csgo, LoL and half life 2 games and the gpu could handle just fine, but the cpu was a terrible bottleneck. Even in idle, it uses 50 or 70% of performance just by running windows. 2 years later i managed to change the cpu for an Atlhon X4 860k quad core, which has a huge performance than A4, but low core performance and high TDP sucked a lot in fewer games. The suffering ended when my Motherboard died and I bought new parts, and changed to Ryzen 5 pro 4650G, since gpus at time were so expensive, and the performance still holds anything, even modern games, in pair with an RTX 2060

@@aleksazunjic9672 The problem is that the chip in the video was released in 2015, well within PS4 era. And at the time literally any Intel CPU in the core era except maybe pentiums and celerons would demolish this. Timing matters a lot when it comes to chip releases, this in the early PS3 era would've been one hell of a CPU, not so much when it actually came out. I think a good comparison would be like if AMD released the 2200G now instead of 4 years ago.

I have a heavily overclocked A10-7870K at 4.5GHz/4.7GHz boost paired up with two R7 250 2GB DDR3 cards in CFx. In my limited experience with the platform: 1.- These chips perform better when you don't use the iGPU, using it means that the APU has to cut some frequency off the CPU cores, making them back down into C3-C4 core states, being very low (3.0GHz or smh on my case) due to Asfuck (asrock) getting wrong the VRMs and cooking the boards when both CPU and iGPU get hammered at the same time, and also to keep within the TDP limits in TDP-enforced models (Non-K ones). Disabling the iGPU frees up some RAM bandwidth that the chip can benefit from when overclocked. 2.- The cores need some seriously high frequency to run anything remotely modern, at 4.5GHz some modern stuff actually doesn't drop from 30FPS, but on stock these things suck hard, especially the A8s and Quadcore A6s due to the inherent low frequencies, being equal or lower than 3.6GHz, and getting further gimped down when using the iGPU. 3.- Memory frequency is king, in my experience, anything lower than 1866MHz DDR3 will cause severe bottlenecks on even iGPU-less chips (such as the Athlon x4 8xx ones), the only ones that will run ok with such subpar memory are the Dual core A4s or shit-grade E2s. RAM at 2133MHz is the standard for K chips, and I have seen some chips handling up to 2666MHz DDR3, the higher the RAM frequency is, the higher the increases in the efficiency of overclocks. You could play around with some spare parts and check how the results vary. Anyways, this was a good video, keep it up man!

Case is now like brand new and whilst doing that I ran contact cleaner in the front USB ports and into the top buttons, all gleaming and even had the 240mm LED fan out from behind front panel and made that shine again. I even had it running cyberpunk at around 30fps, with everything turned down & heavy FSR (life) support, but it could do it. I wonder IF the nVidia Driver Overhead affects older CPU's like this one more so than a more current CPU ? As an AMD 200 or 300 series GPU maybe a better pairing but since this is an older CPU it may not make much of a difference.
@The_Man_In_Red Жыл бұрын
I think I can answer both your questions. 1) No. Any capable GPU is going to be so CPU limited under any circumstance, any perceivable "driver overhead" would be lost in the massive bottleneck that already exists. If you go far back enough to an Nvidia GPU that makes sense for the A8 7650k such as the GTX 460 or GTX 560 -- Nvidia was still using hardware scheduler on those microarchitectures - so they had no driver overhead. I believe Nvidia switched to software scheduler with Kepler (GTX 600 series) which is the first generation capable of showing any sort of driver overhead. Perhaps something like the GTX 650 would be good enough to show driver overhead compared to say an R9 260 or 270 but I have a suspicion both would still be CPU bottlenecked. 2.) I used to have an A6 3620 APU (Socket FM1) and even with an R9 280 it was heavily CPU constrained. I had plenty of stutter and poor performance even with reduced quality settings just trying to run Overwatch 1 back in 2016. Upgraded to a Ryzen 5 1600 in 2017 and it was night-and-day performance difference. Socket FM1 really was that bad. That being said for an APU that could run most games of the time decently well, I managed to play games such as Borderlands 1 & 2, Skyrim, and Bioshock Infinite on that little A6 3620. With enough graphics and .ini tweaking I had pretty reasonable 40-50 FPS in most of those games with decent looking textures at the cost of terrible anti-aliasing, shadows, and ambient occlusion.

Looking forward to the one where you do a build on a budget - hopefully it will perform better than this thing did! Yeah, anything that is pre-Ryzen, on the AMD platform, just isn't worth doing. So AM3, FM2, FM2+, FM1, etc etc. That 1060 is really under utilized, even though I would stay away from the 3GB card and instead get the 6GB card, or the 105Ti - you won't be able to use a 3GB 1060 to its full potential because it will run out of VRAM before you reach the limits of the processing power of the card itself.

So for about 40 or so quid you can give that machine a proper CPU upgrade and have a much easier time selling it. I'd keep the mechanical drive as a mass storage option and put the Windows 10 install on an SSD. I have actually had 2 of these systems. One I pulled out of the garbage and one came from ebay as a motherboard CPU and RAM for 40 dollars. The garbage dump system was an a6 3670. The ebay one is a8 3870k that will overclock quite high, about 4.3 ghz I think, and it makes a pretty big difference. The a6 system was really terrible. I tried it with an rx460 2 gig card and it was very similar to this video. The card was only pushed to about a max of 50 percent utilization. The a8 system with the overclock was a decent match for the 460 though. Still, not a good value system but it satisfied my curiosity about this old platform.

Would be interested more in what it can do vs what it can't do. Wondering what video card is best paired with it.

My old PC was FX 6300 CPU alongside R7 260x GPU. Seemed "powerful" in 2013 when I built it. But suddenly after the Ryzen CPUs appeared I realised that the FX 6300 was a fraction of the Ryzen's power.

Those CSGO results are horrendous we have the GTX 1060 3GB paired with a Ryzen 1500x and it gets 180+ FPS @ 1080p medium

I have one of those type of AMD sockets in my home media server. It has 16g RAM too. Its a A10-6800k and it works great for that, a server. It has a nVidia GTX970 as its GPU.

I remember dreaming of having one of these because it was compatible with my a4 33xx something pc, as it had like double the performance in games like CSGO

Can you try making a build with Core 2 Quad and see how it fares against this one? It'd be interesting since they're about 5 years old at least when this was launched but I believe they're still kinda cool. Especially the Q9650 or an OC Q6600

It performs around similar performance to A series. And they lack modern instruction set

if you have such system, keep it and use it as long as you're happy with light gaming; if not, don't bother building it.

Maybe goin higher in resolution will make some framerates better . I had a amd athlon fx before with a r9 270x . The cpu was a bottleneck when i made the resolution 1440p it run better than at 1080p since the gpu was doin most of the work at that point . When i did it i was like what the heck is happening here i remember 😂

You should try benchmarking without msi afterburner. Those stats being pulled can take a toll on weaker CPUs.

In 2014 I had an Athlon X4 860k FM2+ 8GB DDR3 and a RX 470. The PC was a disaster... I wanted it so bad and when I finally build the pc it was pretty weak because of the cpu.

i picked up a wx4100 4gb for $50 aussie dollars the other day. Holds 1200mhz with a bios flash to 0.95v, 65w tdp, 1200 core and 1700mhz vram. Performs pretty much the same as an rx 460 but chews next to nothing. Worls well in my old i7 6700 dell optiplex sff being a single slot card.

tbh my i7 2600 i had was even holding back my 1060 3gb, as i saw more performance when i swapped it out for an i7 4790 - then again i reused my 16gb of DDR3 and that ran faster as the 1060 wont run it faster than 1333mhz, plus i think the 4790 uses a faster version of PCI-Express. i'll take it over a 1050 ti

It's a shame that the FM CPU are so bad in these days.. I have one for a Windows 7 build to play some older games. :D I've tested it with a GTX 1630, but the GPU is still more powerful than this CPU. :') But Forza and RDR2 are running better than i thought.
