Indeed, what I would've liked to see is how does this thing compare to something like say MPC-HC+madVR+LAV Filters or just the now outdated Core Codec Pack, either of which I assume most anime viewers are already using.
@wmacosx7 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. MPC-HC+madVR+LAV is surely more customizable, and if you use aggressive settings it can use up most of the power of a decent gaming card so... this cable _should_ not be able to do better (assuming you have an half-decent gpu). Whatever is in the cable will probably be less general purpose than a gpu so maybe better at this specific task, but if this is the case then why do gpu companies haven't embedded it in their cards?

Something like that should be the responsibility of the graphics card. And we are kind of getting there with NVIDIAs AI based upscaling and anti aliasing. Project NEMESI5 We can't know exactly what they're doing without ripping the code off of the DSP, but it looks like a blend of antialiasing, sharpening, upscaling, and tone mapping to me. Keep in mind that FXAA is fairly general; there are a whole host of algorithms used for the edge detection step, and it's the only applicable method for a finished frame like they have here. All of these are things that can be adjusted through the graphics card and monitor on PC. They can't bring back data that isn't there in the final frame.

I found a cable that does the EXACT same thing for WAAYY cheaper. It's called the Seiki U-VISION cable. Oh, and it's also the original and Marseille is the one that copied them. Because it predates the mCable by a couple years and they even share a similar overall design.... how's that for a turn of events... That's typical of the world we live in. We tend to miss the originals and once the copycats come along they somehow obtain all of the glory....
@CryptoJordanVR7 жыл бұрын
Ok... so... I've been doing A LOT of research and I revoke my statement on Marseille being a copycat. Turns out these types of cables have been around for years. There's a whole slew of them from all sorts of different brands. Buuuut, ALL OF THEM use the same chips that are manufactured by Marseille. So, in conclusion, Marseille has been distributing the technology for these cables for years, but has only just recently decided to straight-up make cables themselves. HOWEVER, the other brands tend to be MUCH cheaper than the mCable. If anyone wants a list of the ones I've found so far I'll be listing them in my own comment in the comment section. That way if everyone gives that comment a like, then more people will be able to see it and know that there are alternatives. Because if I listed it here it would get lost in the replies. Here's a link to that comment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5utq5yYe7mUp6M&lc=z221hzgqnrfdfzgwj04t1aokg24lfqruzpe5aqe2iyegbk0h00410

So it's like a good upscaler, but not as good and has literally no configuration options so if it ruins certain content you either have to switch resolutions or switch between this and a regular cable?
@jttech447 жыл бұрын
Depending on the game, the no-fps hit AA is nice. Games like Elite Dangerous that have shitty AA even at max settings could benefit, and something like deus ex could use some polish on a large 1080p panel. The price is the real holdup, because ~$130 could certainly buy you a nicer video card (probably more clock) and that might give you enough to bump the AA up anyway. While it wouldn't improve games that have crap AA, it's probably the better option.
@Zizzily7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really wouldn't want to use it on a PC because while it might make AA look better, that hit to the regular desktop (and probably things like Word and web browsing and everything else text-based would probably take a big hit.) I'm not even sure if I'd like it on console. There are lots of enhancements in TV options that make *certain* things look better, but other things end up looking like crap, and with no quick way to adjust it, or even just turn it off, it kind of sucks. That and needing to adjust the resolution of the source. On most consoles, IIRC, when you set them to the resolution of the TV, it always outputs at that res, whether the game is 720p, 1080p, or full 4K. Further, it wouldn't help at all with games at 900p because the signal would be 1080p, or at least, that's how I see it. I mean, unless you go into your console settings and set it to match the amount of HD the game has. And then what about other things, like if you watch a DVD/Blu-ray/whatever on your console? Gotta switch the rez back to 4K if it's UHD and will video look good with the gaming cable instead of the cinema cable? If you could turn it on, off, switch between game and cinema, and *tell* it the resolution of the content, that might be something.
@glair7 жыл бұрын
it's using two different types of image enhancement. scaling and whatever type of AA filters it's using. if you could just turn off the AA filter and keep the scaling algorithm on that would make this a much better product. as you'd only want the AA filter on certain games.
@Zizzily7 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm pretty sure there's some sharpening filter as well, which is why doubled up you get those outlines, which can be a love it or hate it kind of thing, especially depending on the content, which of course, is another issue.
@Will_Fong7 жыл бұрын
yup just a miniature hardware scaler, darbeeVision seems still better cause it can be adjusted on the fly without the resolution hassle.

This looks KINDA neat, but the need for separate, purpose-built cables and native resolutions, I don't find it to be a realistic option for most people, at all.
@NytoDork7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's honestly questionable who that cable is targeted towards. Most people won't pay 140 something to get visual-quality improvements inside a cable. I mean I might consider one because I watch the weeb stuff, which greatly benefits from the AA (most Live Action just don't really have harsh black outlines in contrast to a very light color). However, it does not seem to address the problem of the compression effect seen everywhere, especially during more hectic scenes. Even then, I am in the extreme minority, because most are even too cheap to buy DVD/Blu-rays. Maybe waiting for an updated version would be the best option? I am seriously confused.
@4FrameMusic7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but considering most source devices adaptively change output resolutions on content changes, and that most televisions change input resolutions based on input source detection, it should work seamlessly. Now, computer monitors with constant, non-standard resolutions, yeah, that's another thing.
@4FrameMusic7 жыл бұрын
In theory, it should work with any device that is able to switch resolutions to whatever your source resolution is. In my experience, an HDMI switch just passes the data through, so if you had 1 of these cables going to your tv, and the other end going to your switcher, you'd be fine. Your quality would be whatever the switcher's quality was before that (which from my experience is decent/non-discernable), plus the obvious enhancements the cable provides. :)

They're really good with isolating variables in experiments. Look at how uniform the test bench is. This is actually a pretty interesting concept. It's similar to the hdmi reciever I have that has it's own scaler and dsp chip, but much less expensive and purpose-built. djVisionIT Upscaling 720p, it would work very well for TV signals to get to 1080p, but 1080i signals aren’t supported as interlaced signals are handled differently from progressive signals, so the cable just won’t touch that resolution.

Same here over sharpening looks really bad. No image filter can add detail or colors that werent there before. A good upscaler should scale content so it looks as close as possible to the content being played on a display with the same resolution as the content.

Now that u are reading this you cannot stop if you stop you will never play minecraft again. that boy met a girl on the server and both got married when they became 18 years of old age. but then when she died he was heart broken and cut his wrists so bad his hands came off. this story made me cry when i first heard it and if you dont cry you will never produce tears and your eyes will turn into dry balls. but the boy did not have hands and could not play minecraft he would only visit her grave but her ghost appeared and she told him a riddle it went like this: what has seven dots but cant spot a polka-dot? close your eyes and think of the answer to this riddle. if you guess right you will win the lottery in eight years. If you think of the wrong riddle a black man will come up behind you and shoot you in the back of the head. Once the boy answered this riddle his girlfriend/wife came back to life and they kissed to break the curse. Copy and paste this story and email it to your local congressman if you want to enjoy the benefits of true love and lag free minecraft servers. Copy this down by hand and then make a mold of it and then inscribe it onto the hood of your car if you want to ensure you will drive as fast as sonic. If you do neither of these you will suddenly have a stroke and lose both of your hands like the little boy did and you will NEVER be able to spin a fidget spinner AGAIN. god bless

I personally thought that both Tomb Raider and Deus Ex looked better on the left side of the screen with the "normal" HDMI cable. Are we absolutely sure that the two shots didn't get mixed up in the editing? I have a 25" 1440p Dell Ultra Sharp screen, even watched the video in 4K (just to eliminate as much KZbin compression artifacts as possible) and turned off f.lux to better see any contrast differences but still, I think that the "normal version" looks better. I would say that my vision acuity perhaps is not that good but I'm a photographer and my eyes get annoyed at the slightest quality differences. Perhaps it includes a sharpening filter that is on a too high setting or sth, but in my eyes the gaming edition of mCable looks horrible. The cinema version though looks indeed beautiful!!
@SahilP26487 жыл бұрын
This whole review is bs. This cable is doing nothing but sharpening the frame. AA depends on game software. Otherwise Nvidia and AMD both would have implemented some sort of AA at the hardware level, think about it. AA is strictly software based.
@JSTM20007 жыл бұрын
The mCable doesn't actually add any quality to the image, it just "makes up more details" by processing it. It's actually detrimental for quality in some cases, just depends what the user wants from the image. For "purest" image quality you actually want the normal HDMI cable.
@PixlRainbow7 жыл бұрын
Sahil Pethe actually, AMD and NVIDIA *have* in fact implemented this at the hardware level. However, by default your drivers are configured to wait for the program to explicitly request features. Some older games simply won't request certain features because they simply weren't available at the time of development, in which case you can force the features to be turned on under the configuration tool for your respective brand of GPU.

Indeed the reason it works at such low latency is probably because its a one-purpose fixed function device. If it wasn't then the FIRST thing you would want is the ability to switch it between Game and Video modes as its really not practical buying one of these for everyone device when you have surround receiver so could do it with just one.
